Objective: Language and executive functioning are two domains commonly impacted in ALS and should be assessed sensitively and briefly. This paper investigates the utility of the Brief Executive Language Screen (BELS) in ALS. Methods: ALS patients (N = 27) were compared to age, education, and pre-morbid intelligence-matched healthy controls (N = 91) at the group level using ANCOVA and t-tests. A case series was also conducted to explore individual and subgroup performance on the BELS and Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS). Results: Groups were largely matched on neuropsycholog

PURPOSE: This study compared English grammatical performance of bilingual school-age children who spoke either Spanish or Vietnamese at home, focusing on their first-language influence on the acquisition of 13 English grammatical forms.
METHOD: Scores from 30 children on a cloze task were analyzed for accuracy, developmental patterns, and error types. Pairwise matching was used to match individual Vietnamese and Spanish bilinguals on age and English experience. Caregivers rated language ability and daily use of the home language and English.
RESULTS: Higher grammatical accuracy across groups

PURPOSE: The present study was designed to investigate persistence in preschool children with developmental language disorder (DLD) compared to similar-age peers with typical language (TL) on tasks designed to be moderately challenging, yet equivalent in difficulty for both groups.
METHOD: Sixteen preschool-age children with DLD were matched to 16 children with TL based on chronological age, biological sex, and maternal education. The children completed two play-based tasks that were designed to elicit some success but impossible to complete. Task persistence was measured by the total time sp

INTRODUCTION: In the Netherlands, early language intervention is offered to young children with Language Delay (LD). The intervention combines groupwise language intervention, individual speech and language therapy and parent-implemented language intervention. This study tests the hypothesis that children with LD show progress in their receptive and expressive language during intervention. Differences in language progress between age groups (< 36 months and ≥ 36 months at intervention start) were expected in favour of the younger group, which might be due to an earlier intervention start, a lo

PURPOSE: This study examines two components of lexical acquisition and phonological development that occur during the first 50-word stage of language development in neurotypical (NT) children. One component is how children learn words based on their existing speech sound inventories (i.e., in-phonology and out-of-phonology word learning). The other component is the relationship between the children's number of words and the number of phonemes in their speech sound inventories. The goal of this study is to determine if the same two components occur in children with autism spectrum disorders (AS

The neuropsychological nature of verbal auditory agnosia is not fully understood. This study aims to describe the language deficits and the remediation strategies used in a person with verbal auditory agnosia. In addition, it will address the theoretical issues concerning the nature of the phenomenon and the clinical implications in the management of people with this disorder.

PURPOSE: Cross-situational statistical learning is one mechanism by which typically developing toddlers map words to referents. Yet, this type of statistical learning has been found less efficient in children with developmental language disorder (DLD). The purpose of this article is to evaluate cross-situational statistical learning in very young children with language delay, late talkers (LTs), compared to typically talking toddlers. We predict that LTs will show inefficiency in cross-situational statistical word learning similar to older children with DLD.
METHOD: LT (n = 15, 18-34 months)

Most children with a developmental language disorder (DLD) have persistent grammatical difficulties, and a considerable subgroup of these children also experience difficulties in their speech production development. Research suggests that speech and language development are related, but what this relation looks like is unclear. We examined whether phonological and grammatical complexity and accuracy scores of 3- to 6-year-old children with DLD are related over time. We included 37 children with DLD (mean age T1 = 4;2 (SD = 1;0), range: 2;9-6;0) who received intervention in a clinical setting.

PURPOSE: Dosage has been identified as an important element of treatment that may affect treatment efficacy. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of dose schedule for treatment of grammatical morphology deficits in children with specific language impairment (SLI).
METHOD: Sixteen 4-to-5-year-old children with SLI participated in a 5-week intervention consisting of equivalent daily Enhanced Conversational Recast treatment (Plante et al., 2014) targeting grammatical morphology. Half of the children received treatment in one 30-min session (massed condition). Half received treatment

BACKGROUND: Multilingual children in monolingual education systems are generally assessed against monolingual norms, raising questions about identifying genuine language support needs versus expected developmental trajectories.
AIMS: This study aimed to identify: (1) the amount of cumulative exposure to the societal language (SL) beyond which multilingual children perform within the range of monolinguals (at group level) in terms of SL proficiency, and (2) the point at which cumulative SL experience no longer correlates with SL proficiency outcomes.
METHODS: We examined multilingual learners

PURPOSE: Much work has been done to characterize the grammatical productivity of English-speaking monolingual children and the English skills of bilingual children. However, less work has been done to characterize productivity of bilingual children in other languages. This study investigates the clinical utility of a Spanish grammatical productivity measure to address the need for linguistically responsive measures in bilingual language assessment.
METHOD: Spontaneous language samples were collected for 23 typically developing (TD) preschoolers and nine preschoolers with developmental languag

Oral narratives are important for assessing children as narratives provide useful information about children's language development. This study aimed to explore how the narrative skills of Cypriot-Greek speaking children develop in the domains of syntactic productivity, complexity, and lexical diversity, during their preschool and primary school years. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether there was any difference in the performance of boys and girls on the narrative measures. One hundred and twenty-nine 4-9-year-old typically developing Cypriot-Greek-speaking children were recru

This study tested morphological skills among 14 native Arab kindergarteners with developmental language disorder (DLD) (age; 5.51 ± 0.95, 10 boys and 4 girls) and fifteen kindergarteners with typical language development (TD) (age; 5.49 ± 0.37, 7 boys and 8 girls). The participants completed two tasks designed to assess the identification and production of inflectional morphology skills in Arabic. In the identification task, the participants were asked to choose between two alternatives of pseudowords, the one that corresponds to a conventional inflection in the language, based on the instruct

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

Purpose The aim of the study was to determine the integrity of fast mapping among adults with developmental language disorder (DLD). Method Forty-eight adults with DLD or typical language development (TD) were presented with 24 novel words and photos of their unfamiliar referents from the semantic categories of mammal, bird, fruit, or insect in two conditions. In the fast-mapping condition, 12 of the 24 unfamiliar referents were presented, one at a time alongside a familiar referent (e.g., a dog) and a question (e.g., Is the tail of the torato up?). In the explicit-encoding condition, the othe

OBJECTIVES: To study the impact of (re)habilitation strategy on speech-language outcomes for early, cochlear implanted children enrolled in different intervention programmes post implant.
METHODS: Data relate to a total of 130 children representing two pediatric cohorts consisting of 94 and 36 subjects, respectively. The two cohorts had different speech and language intervention following cochlear implantation, i.e. standard habilitation vs. auditory verbal (AV) intervention. Three tests of speech and language were applied covering language areas of receptive and productive vocabulary and lan

PURPOSE: To examine the later development of language and literacy of children who had delayed language at age 2 but were in the normal range at age 4.
METHOD: Longitudinal data were analyzed from 3,598 pairs of twins participating in the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS). Six hundred thirty-three twins (8.8%) were delayed at age 2 based on parent-reported expressive vocabulary, and of these, 373 (59.0%) were classified as recovered based on 4-year measures. Each recovered 4-year-old was matched on vocabulary, gender, and zygosity to another 4-year-old without a history of early delay.

Purpose Phonological complexity is known to be a good index of developmental language disorder (DLD) in normal-hearing children, who have major difficulties on some complex structures. Some deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) present a profile that evokes DLD, with persistent linguistic difficulties despite good audiological and environmental conditions. However, teasing apart what is related to auditory deficit or to language disorder remains complex. Method We compared the performance of three groups of school-age children, 33 children with CI, 22 with DLD, and 24 with typical develop
