Stuttering is a fluency disorder that is multidimensional because it involves more than speech difficulties. People who stutter can use the Internet to find out more about their condition and connect with other people in the same position, yet in Croatia, there are not nearly as many online sources on stuttering or as many possibilities to connect with other people who stutter as in the USA or Great Britain. If one does not speak English well, a lot of information about stuttering will simply be denied to them, especially to those who have never received speech therapy. The present study, the

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) facilitates or inhibits spontaneous neuronal activity by low-intensity current. In this study, we evaluated the effects of tDCS and sham stimulation combined with speech language therapy (SLT) on nonfluent poststroke aphasia (PSA) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with PSA were randomly divided into the anode tDCS (A-tDCS) group (n = 8) and sham tDCS (S-tDCS) group (n = 10). The anodes and cathodes were fixed over left inferior gyrus frontalis (L-IFG) and the deltoid muscle of the right shoulder. A-tDCS consisted of 2 mA for 2

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate speech-language therapy students often find it difficult to see the relevance of theoretical module content, which may negatively influence their motivation to learn. The real world of their future profession can be brought to life in the theory classroom by including authentic case study examples. Video case studies are well suited to illustrating communication disorders and may also be easier to remember and relate to information already in the long-term memory.
OBJECTIVES: This article describes the perceptions of undergraduate students regarding the inclusion of

OBJECTIVE: Phonetic transcription may encourage engagement with language diversity in multilingual settings. We describe how transcription can be used to help South African speech-language therapy (SLT) students engage with the many languages spoken in their country. Objectives were to describe (a) the local context, (b) transcription in the curriculum, and (c) participant observations from staff facilitating the Child Speech course.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: A case study approach was used to investigate teaching and learning transcription in a real-life context, the undergraduate second-year Chi

Expressive dysphasia accompanies left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG/Broca) injury. Recovery may relate to interhemispheric balance with homologous, contralesional IFG but is unexplored in children. We evaluated effects of inhibitory rTMS to contralesional IFG combined with intensive speech therapy (SLT). A 15year-old, right-handed male incurred a left middle cerebral artery stroke. After 30months, severe non-fluent dysphasia impacted quality of life. Language networks, neuronal metabolism and white matter pathways were explored using MRI. Language function was measured longitudinally. An intensi

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment can reduces disfigurement for children with cleft lip/palate (CLP); however, most children have persistent speech and language problems especially if speech and language services are not available in underserviced and/or developing regions and countries. Children in such areas cannot reach appropriate and timely speech therapy services.

BACKGROUND: Hearing impairment affects speech-language and academic development, creating substantial lifelong public health and economic burdens. In South Africa, early intervention typically follows either the Listening and Spoken Language-South Africa (LSL-SA) or Traditional Speech-Language Therapy (TSLT) model. Although LSL-SA demonstrates promising outcomes, limited evidence compares its costs with TSLT in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Such evidence is needed to inform equitable health financing and disability-inclusion policies.
AIM: This study aimed to compare the total and

BACKGROUND: Traditional placements in speech and language therapy (SLT) courses pose challenges for students to gain exposure and exchange knowledge within a wide range of specialties in the profession. To counteract this, we piloted an innovative 'mentoring circuit' to provide an online opportunity for student and newly qualified SLTs to gain insights and network.
APPROACH: Mentees and mentors were recruited through professional networks and snowball sampling methods. Six working SLTs from different specialties volunteered as 'mentors' and were allocated individual breakout rooms on Zoom. St

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that interventions provided by a speech and language therapist (SLT) can positively impact the quality of life (QoL) of people with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Current reviews refer to functional approaches rather than categorising QoL-enhancing therapies.
AIMS: This paper aims to provide an overview of the approaches provided by SLTs to enhance QoL in people with PPA, taking into account influencing factors and various measurement instruments.
METHODS: Given the lack of concepts and inconsistent measurement instruments in the area of QoL-enhancing therap

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: This is a summary of research studies (known as clinical trials) called SPIRIT 1 and SPIRIT 2. The SPIRIT 1 and SPIRIT 2 studies compared how well a medicine called relugolix combination therapy worked in relieving pain in women with moderate to severe endometriosis compared to a placebo, a pill with no active medication. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to what normally lines the uterus grows in other places, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and bowels.
WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?: Researchers looked at 1261 adult women with moderate to severe endometrios

PURPOSE: In the study, we investigated whether speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in India use practice and feedback conditions of motor learning principles (MLPs), including biofeedback, in dysphagia therapy in adults using a problem-solution approach.
METHOD: Based on a literature review and clinical experience, we developed and validated a hypothetical case involving an adult with dysphagia (representing the problem) and a purpose-built 22-item questionnaire (representing the solution). We distributed the questionnaire electronically by sending an e-mail to 2,069 SLPs and also published a

BACKGROUND: Despite the compelling case for engaging parents in speech and language therapy, research indicates that speech and language therapists (SLTs) currently have a leading role in the goal-setting process of therapy for children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Therefore, we set out to develop a tool that aims to support the dialogue between SLTs and parents and enhance shared decision-making about children's communicative participation goals. We used co-design techniques with SLT-practitioners to include their perspectives throughout the design process. Although co-design h

BACKGROUND: The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) is an international initiative that offers standardized and validated tools to guide the appraisal of patient-reported outcome measures in healthcare.
AIMS: To explore the use of a new set of tools from the COSMIN to appraise studies on one outcome measure available to speech and language therapists (SLTs).
METHODS & PROCEDURES: We used the COSMIN tools to appraise seven studies and a user manual that reported the measurement properties of the Focus on the Outcomes of Children Under Six (FO

Speech, language, and communication needs are particularly common among multilingual and migrant children. More than every third child in Germany has a migrant background. In the city of Bremen, this figure is even higher, including refugee children. The availability of comprehensive data on the provision and uptake of speech and language therapy (SLT) services is still inadequate, especially for multilingual children. However, health-monitoring programs report that migrants differ in many health-related areas from the majority population, mainly in barriers in health care. This study examines

BACKGROUND: Sure Start has been a flagship policy for the UK Labour Government since 1998. Its aim was to improve the life chances of children under five years of age who live in areas of socio-economic disadvantage by means of multi-agency, multidisciplinary Sure Start Local Programmes (SSLPs). Speech and language therapists have played a key part in many SSLPs, and have had the opportunity to extend their roles. Despite the scrutiny paid to Sure Start, there has been no comprehensive analysis of speech and language therapists' contribution to date. Studies have focused on individual programm

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapy (SLT) managers are expected to ensure that there are appropriate services available for bilingual and multilingual clients in order to ensure an equitable service to all clients. However, there is a paucity of data available to inform service planning.
AIMS: To identify the level to which SLT services in three UK cities meet the recommendations of The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Good Practice Guidelines. Socio-demographic information is provided about the number of children from ethnic minorities in the population and the pro

Motor complications become increasingly prominent as Parkinson's disease (PD) progresses. Although device-aided therapies (DAT) improve symptoms control in advanced PD, referral practices remain inconsistent, partly due to unequal access to specialist centers. Screening tools such as MANAGE-PD help identify patients who may benefit from DAT, while large language models (LLMs) are emerging as scalable clinical decision-support tools. To assess the screening performance and clinical safety of LLM-based triage in identifying PD patients eligible for DAT and to compare LLMs classifications with sp
