Intact long bones of the upper and lower extremities have been used in the derivation of regression equations for the estimation of stature in different population groups. We report on 21 cases with combined soft tissue and far reaching bone defects of the lower leg. The bone defects were bridged by the fibula-pro-tibia-operation. In eleven patients the restoration of the full weightbearing leg was achieved. Five patients have to use a supporting walking splint at the end of the medical treatment. In four cases we found fistulas without secretion. Five amputations of the lower leg were unavoidable.

A 69-year-old woman committed suicide by cutting her lower legs with a safety razor blade. Autopsy revealed horizontal incised wounds around the circumference of the lower legs, 24 cm above the heels, cutting superficial veins on both sides, the underlying lower legs muscles, and extending into both lower leg bones with associated hematoma formation. Also, there were a large number of superficial tentative or "hesitation" cuts ranging from 3 to 6 cm over the lower legs. Death was attributed to hemorrhagic shock following injuries to blood vessels of the lower legs.

Dead and sick grey heron chicks with multiple fractures of the leg and wing bones and/or bone deformities have been reported at Besthorpe Nature Reserve heronry in north Nottinghamshire since 1996. Forty-five grey heron carcases were examined, 35 from the Besthorpe colony and 10 from other colonies where bone disease was not known to occur. On the basis of the results of radiological studies, postmortem examinations, peripheral quantitative computed tomography scanning and four-point bending tests, it was concluded that the skeletal abnormalities were probably due to metabolic bone disease.

Professional and recreational sporting activities have increased substantially in recent years and have led to a rise in the number of sports-related and overuse injuries. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has become an important tool for evaluating the lower leg for providing the necessary information for patient management and rehabilitation following this injury. The fasciocutaneous flap is very useful in the repair of soft tissue defects on the lower leg. It is easy to design and construct large flaps that are safe because of the good circulation. The operating time is short for an experienced surgeon and no extra equipment is needed. It is perfectly possible to carry out surgery on the underlying bones at the same time. The postoperative treatment is simple for both the patient and the staff. The surgical technique is described and the results of 23 flaps are critically reviewed.
