Cutaneous lepidopterism: dermatitis from contact with moths of Hylesia metabus (Cramer 1775) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), the causative agent of caripito itch.

BACKGROUND: Lepidopterism derived from contact with arthropods and/or their products can result in adverse reactions that vary in severity from mild irritation to severe reactions including anaphylactic shock and death. Lepidopterism includes cutaneous and/or mucosal manifestations, systemic symptoms, or both mucocutaneous and systemic manifestations. OBJECTIVE: Epidemic outbreaks of dermatitis due to Hylesia sp. have been recorded in several countries of Latin America. The impact of climatic changes occurring presently on migrational and reproductive cycles of Hylesia metabus is also discuss

Life history traits of Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on non-Bt and Bt transgenic corn hybrids in eastern North Carolina.

Transgenic varieties of field corn that express the CrylAb B. thuringiensis (Bt) toxin in ear tissue present the potential of reducing ear feeding by the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and for reducing the size of populations of the insect infesting other host crops. Life history parameters of H. zea feeding on ears of conventional and Bt field corn varieties were measured in field plots in eastern North Carolina in 1997 and 1998. Transformation events investigated were Mon-810 and Bt-11. Bt corn was found to cause a steady mortality of larvae during development, but p

Long-Term Selection with α-Solanine Enhances Tolerance and Drives Multilevel Physiological Remodeling in Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous pest exposed to plant defensive chemicals. We tested whether sustained selection by the potato steroidal glycoalkaloid α-solanine induces changes in tolerance, life-history performance, and physiology. A potato-sprout-derived preparation was standardized for α-solanine content by targeted LC-ESI-MS/MS, and a selected line was maintained for 12 generations on a diet containing 1.0 mg α-solanine g-1. Selected and unselected lines were compared across normal artificial diet, α-solanine diet, and potat

Functional Divergence of Two General Odorant-Binding Proteins to Sex Pheromones and Host Plant Volatiles in Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a significant polyphagous leafroller that damages trees and shrubs in Rosaceae and other families. However, the molecular mechanisms by which this pest recognizes sex pheromones and host plant volatiles remain largely unknown. Tissue expression profiles indicated that two general odorant-binding proteins (AoraGOBP1 and AoraGOBP2) were more abundant in the antennae and wings of both sexes, with AoraGOBP1 being rich in the female head and abdomen. Temporal expression profiles showed that AoraGOBP1 was expressed at the highest level in 5 day-nmated a

Genome profiling of an indigenous Bacillus thuringiensis isolate, T405 toxic against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

In this study, we present the molecular and insecticidal characteristics of an indigenous Bt isolate T405 toxic against the maize fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. The presence of cry1, cry2 (cry2Aa & cry2Ab) and vip3A1 genes in T405 was confirmed. The SDS-PAGE gel analysis confirmed the occurrence of Cry and Vip proteins with molecular masses of 130, ∼88 and 65 kDa in T405. LC50 estimates of T405 and HD1 were 161.37 and 910.73 μg ml-1 for neonates whereas, 412.29 and 1014.95 μg ml-1 correspondingly for 2nd instar FAW larvae. Scanning Electron Microscopy depicted the existence of bip

Host Plants Affect the Foraging Success of Two Parasitoids that Attack Light Brown Apple Moth Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae).

The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana is a key pest of wine grapes in Australia. Two parasitoids, Dolichogenidea tasmanica and Therophilus unimaculatus, attack the larval stage of this pest. D. tasmanica is dominant in vineyards, whereas T. unimaculatus is mainly active in native vegetation. We sought to understand why they differ in their use of habitats. Plants are a major component of habitats of parasitoids, and herbivore-infested plants influence parasitoid foraging efficiency by their architecture and emission of volatile chemicals. We investigated how different plant species

New tools for an old pest: HiPlex targeted sequencing for Bt corn resistance screening in Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) from Canada.

For almost three decades, crystal (Cry) insecticidal proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been used as plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) in transgenic corn, resulting in areawide suppression of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). Control of this once-considered most damaging pest of corn in North America is now threatened by the evolution of practical resistance to PIPs in Bt corn. Practical resistance to the Cry1F protein has been detected in eastern Canada, and cases of resistance to the other available Bt PIPs (Cry1Ab, Cry1A.105, and Cry2Ab) are startin

Wavelength-Specific Artificial Light Disrupts Calling Behavior, Pheromone Blend Composition, and Mating Success in the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Artificial light at night (ALAN) and the broader use of artificial light in agriculture are increasingly recognized to affect the physiology and behavior of nocturnal insects, yet their influence on pheromone-mediated reproductive communication in economically important insect pest species remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of artificial illumination on calling behavior, sex pheromone production, blend composition, and mating success in the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, under both laboratory and semi-field conditions. Virgin females were exposed during the scot

Oecophylla smaragdina (Hymenoptera: Formicidae): a biological control agent of the invasive behaving bagworms Metisa plana (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) in oil palm plantations.

The invasive behaving bagworm Metisa plana Walker (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) is the dominant pest defoliator of oil palm canopies, leading to substantial leaf damage and monthly yield losses exceeding 45% in Malaysia. Standard control methods involve trunk chemical injection (TCI) and spraying of highly toxic pesticides (such as cypermethrin), which affect non-target species. We hypothesized that the introduction of a native biological control agent (BCA), the Asian weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina F.) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) would outperform the TCI in terms of scale and revenue consistency

Identification of Novel Toxin Genes from the Stinging Nettle Caterpillar Parasa lepida (Cramer, 1799): Insights into the Evolution of Lepidoptera Toxins.

Many animal species can produce venom for defense, predation, and competition. The venom usually contains diverse peptide and protein toxins, including neurotoxins, proteolytic enzymes, protease inhibitors, and allergens. Some drugs for cancer, neurological disorders, and analgesics were developed based on animal toxin structures and functions. Several caterpillar species possess venoms that cause varying effects on humans both locally and systemically. However, toxins from only a few species have been investigated, limiting the full understanding of the Lepidoptera toxin diversity and evoluti

Genome report: sequencing of Helicoverpa-infecting Ophryocystis sp. confirms cryptic diversity and changes in gene content of Lepidoptera-infecting apicomplexan parasites.

Apicomplexan parasites of insects represent a largely unexplored branch of the tree of life. Their small size and lack of informative phenotypic traits can obscure their diversity and many lineage-specific adaptations to different host species. To better understand how these parasites have evolved, we have sequenced and annotated the genome of a neogregarine parasite of moths in the family Noctuidae, including Helicoverpa armigera. This parasite, which we term Helicoverpa-infecting Ophryocystis, has a tiny 8 Megabase genome with only 2,500 predicted protein-coding genes. Using phylogenomic met

Integrative transcriptomic and functional analysis reveals fatty acyl elongases involved in sex pheromone biosynthesis in rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea).

Elongases are essential enzymes in the biosynthesis of sex pheromones in many lepidopteran species, where together with desaturases they determine pheromone precursor carbon skeletons and contribute to species-specific chemical communication. Despite their presumed importance, no fatty acyl elongase involved in lepidopteran sex pheromone biosynthesis has been functionally characterized to date. The rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, utilizes a blend of C18 monounsaturated aldehydes and alcohols as its sex pheromone, implying a critical elongation step from C16 precursors. Here, transcr

Insecticidal Activity of Trichilia hirta L. (Sapindales: Meliaceae) Extracts Against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae and the Identification of Bioactive Compounds.

Studying plants with insecticidal activity and the compounds responsible for this type of activity is a promising approach for discovering new insecticides. Plants from the Meliaceae family are rich in limonoids, compounds with proven insecticidal action against certain pests. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of the crude methanolic extracts from Trichilia hirta fruits against Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. An initial toxicity bioassay showed 100% larval mortality when testing T. hirta extract. The crude extract was partitioned using ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-butano

Effects of diallyl trisulfide, an active substance from garlic essential oil, on structural chemistry of chitin in Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

The environmental pollution, evolution of resistance, and risks to human and aquatic animal health associated with pesticide application have attracted much attention globally. Herein, we tested the capacity of diallyl trisulfide (DAT) from garlic essential oil to control the destructive stored-product pest, Sitotroga cerealella. The effects of DAT on the total content of cuticular chitin and structure of adults S. cerealella were evaluated. This study was the first to investigate changes in chitin structure in adults due to exposure to DAT through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ther
