The Continuum of Violence: A Qualitative Synthesis of Risk and Protective Factors of Intimate Partner Violence Among Adult Immigrant Women.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a critical public health and human rights concern, disproportionately affecting immigrant women and shaped by intersecting social, cultural, and systemic inequalities. This review employs thematic synthesis to analyse qualitative evidence on how risk and protective factors influence IPV experiences among immigrant women after arrival in host countries. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2024 was conducted across six databases. A total of 31 studies were included, comprising both full

Clinicians' power in the inpatient care of anorexia nervosa: A qualitative investigation of consumer perspectives.

Medically compromised people with anorexia nervosa are cared for in inpatient settings where clinicians closely monitor health and safety. Clinicians are in a position of power, with the capacity to impose mandated weight gain to achieve medical stabilisation. Consumers are in a vulnerable position, compelled to temporarily relinquish autonomy and to accept coercive practices that often diminish the quality of the therapeutic relationship. Clinicians' position of power in mental healthcare has a dual potential for both healing and harm, and limited attention has been given to consumers' views

Public Health Microbiome Curriculum: Looking Below the Tip of the Iceberg for Approaches to Population Health.

We discuss the opportunity for public health microbiome curricula to bridge the gaps in knowledge that exist between microbiome researchers and the lay public. We propose equipping public health professionals, important facilitators of public outreach and behaviour change, with three public health curriculum modules focused on breastfeeding, antibiotics and diet. These modules shift the focus from microbes as pathogens to potential partners in promoting health across the life course. Current public health messages cover only the 'tip of the iceberg' in exploring mechanisms, and this microbiome

Incarceration Exposure, Biological Aging, and Depression Symptoms in an African American Sample of Older Adults.

Objectives: The study draws upon perspectives on life-course stressors and health to assess whether lifetime incarceration exposure is a determinant of biological aging and self-reported depression. Methods: Using data from a sample of 460 African American participants (average age= 57) in the Family and Community Health Study, the study examined two epigenetic indices of biological aging, DunedinPoAm and GrimAge, as well as a self-reported measure of depression symptoms. Estimates were derived from multivariate regression models with adjustments for selection on observables and confounding fa

Stressful life events in childhood and incident stroke: cross-national, longitudinal cohort analyses of HRS and CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stressful life events may contribute to later-life stroke risk, but it remains unclear whether this association is consistent and of similar magnitude across different sociocultural and institutional settings. METHODS: We analyzed data from two nationally representative cohorts: the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS, 2010–2020) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011–2020). Stressful life events in childhood—financial hardship, parental unemployment, parental substance abuse, foster home, parental separation or divorce, and parental death—

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: Signaling & Molecular Perspectives, and the Road Ahead.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a lethal congenital heart disease (CHD) affecting 8-25 per 100,000 neonates globally. Clinical interventions, primarily surgical, have improved the life expectancy of the affected subjects substantially over the years. However, the etiological basis of HLHS remains fundamentally unclear to this day. Based upon the existing paradigm of studies, HLHS exhibits a multifactorial mode of etiology mediated by a complicated course of genetic and signaling cascade. This review presents a detailed outline of the HLHS phenotype, the prenatal and postnatal risks,

"I'm definitely not socially excluded!"- Perceptions of social exclusion among Australian government housing residents aged 80 and older who live alone.

The oldest old - those aged 80 years and over - are the fastest growing sector of the Australian population and are generally assumed to be at risk of social exclusion which impedes healthy aging. The voices of those thought to be vulnerable to social exclusion are seldom heard. Informed by a critical gerontology framework, socio-ecological model of health and life-course perspectives, this research involved semi-structured in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of 13 people aged 80 and older living alone in government housing, in a socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Melbour

CKD-MBD: from the Pathogenesis to the Identification and Development of Potential Novel Therapeutic Targets.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although we have seen tremendous advances in the comprehension of CKD-MBD pathophysiology during the last few years, this was not accompanied by a significant change in mortality rate and quality of life. This review will address the traditional and updated pathophysiology of CKD-MBD along with the therapeutic limitations that affect CKD-MBD and proposed alternative treatment targets. RECENT FINDINGS: An innovative concept brings the osteocyte to the center of CKD-MBD pathophysiology, in contrast to the traditional view of the skeleton as a target organ for disturbances in

How Experiences of Stigma and Discrimination at Various Points in the Queer Life Course Interrelate with Alcohol Use: Views from Sexually and Gender Diverse Youth.

BACKGROUND: The life courses of sexually and gender diverse individuals are shaped by a series of events that include acceptance of one's own sexual orientation or gender identity, the coming out process and socialization in the LGBTQ+ (for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and other sexual orientations and gender identities represented by the plus sign) environment. Generally experienced in a cis-heteronormative context, this process is marked by stigma and discrimination and the social harms they can cause, including a higher-than-average prevalence of alcohol use. Targeting the cardio-neuro axis through nutrition: inflammatory mechanisms linking cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD), particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and neurodegenerative diseases (ND), remain leading causes of global morbidity and mortality. Although traditionally studied in isolation, accumulating evidence indicates that these conditions are mechanistically interconnected through shared pathways, including chronic systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and dysregulated lipid metabolism. Here, we propose a cardio-neuro axis in which vascular and neurodegenerative processes are linked along a continuum that is modifiable through diet. In this perspective,

"You Take This Day by Day, Come What May": A Qualitative Study of the Psychosocial Impacts of Living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have reported health-related quality-of-life impacts of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD); however, further research is needed to understand how those with DMD experience their condition and how psychosocial impacts evolve over time in response to disease progression. This qualitative study explores the social and emotional implications of key transitions, challenges and adaptations throughout the disease course from the perspective of patients and family caregivers. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with men and boys with DMD, and/or their caregivers, i

OBJECTIVES: Based on the life course perspective and gender differences in stepparental roles, this study examines frequency of social contact between mid- to late-life stepparents and their stepchildren after stepparents' marriage to their stepchildren's biological parent has been dissolved through widowhood or divorce. METHOD: Using 5 waves of panel data on stepparent-stepchild pairs from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 12,947 stepchild observations on 4,063 stepchildren belonging to 1,663 stepparents) spanning 10 years (1998-2008), I estimate ordered logit multilevel models predicting

"What Could Have Stopped This?": Exploring Opportunities for Early Intervention Through the Voices of Women Who Have Perpetrated Child Sexual Abuse.

The voices of individuals convicted of sexual offenses - including the voices of females - are often silenced in research. Exploring the user voice has many advantages, including service improvement and enhanced evidence-based program development and design. The current study utilized the user voice by attaining perceptions of women sentenced for child sexual abuse (CSA) in Australia - to identify what they perceived as missed opportunities for support that may have forestalled onset of their CSA perpetration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 women across three jurisdictions i

Early life adversities and polyvictimization in young persons with sexual behavior problems: A longitudinal study of child protective service referrals.

There is scarce research on children and youth with sexual behavior problems (SBP) and their developmental antecedents and the research that does exist is mostly retrospective and correlational. While prior research focused on the central role of sexual victimization, recent research suggests that young persons with SBP are exposed to a series of adversities not limited to child sexual victimization and require multifaceted assessment and intervention using a developmental life course perspective. The current study includes an examination of the complete longitudinal sequence of child protecti

Unemployment and substance use problems among young adults: Does childhood low socioeconomic status exacerbate the effect?

The current study tested whether unemployment predicted young adults' heavy episodic drinking, cigarette smoking, and cannabis use after taking into account individual development in substance use. Furthermore, building on the life course perspective, this study examined whether the link between unemployment and substance use among young adults differed for those who experienced low childhood SES compared to those who did not. Data for the present study came from the Seattle Social Development Project (SSDP), a panel study examining a broad range of developmental outcomes from ages 10 to 33. A
