Rehabilitation for cancer patients at Black Lion hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, there were greater than 2000 adult and 200 pediatric cancer patients annually in 2010, but the estimated number of cancer patients were increasing. Oncologic rehabilitation treatment may result in improved physical and mental impairment. There is a paucity of information about rehabilitation service utilization among cancer patients in Ethiopia. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess the rehabilitation service for cancer patient and associated factors at Black Lion hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional quantitative study wa

Metabolic bone disease in lion cubs at the London Zoo in 1889: the original animal model of rickets.

In 1889 Dr. John Bland-Sutton, a prominent London surgeon, was consulted about fatal rickets in over 20 successive litters of lion cubs born at the London Zoo. He evaluated the diet and found the cause of rickets to be nutritional in origin. He recommended that goat meat with crushed bones and cod-liver oil be added to the lean horsemeat diet of the cubs and their mothers. Rickets were reversed, the cubs survived, and subsequent litters thrived. Thirty years later, in classic controlled studies conducted in puppies and young rats, the definitive role of calcium, phosphate and vitamin D in prev

Numbers of Granule Cells and GABAergic Boutons Are Correlated in Shrunken Sclerotic Hippocampi of Sea Lions with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

A possible mechanism of temporal lobe epilepsy is insufficient inhibition of hippocampal dentate granule cells. Precipitating injuries that kill interneurons in the dentate gyrus might result in fewer inhibitory synapses with granule cells. To test this hypothesis, previous studies evaluated numbers or densities of interneurons, γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)ergic boutons, and inhibitory synapses in tissue from human patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and rodent models. However, those studies have limitations. Some of those limitations can be addressed by a large animal model. Sea lions (Zaloph

Cross-species transmission and evolutionary dynamics of canine distemper virus during a spillover in African lions of Serengeti National Park.

The outcome of pathogen spillover from a reservoir to a novel host population can range from a "dead-end" when there is no onward transmission in the recipient population, to epidemic spread and even establishment in new hosts. Understanding the evolutionary epidemiology of spillover events leading to discrete outcomes in novel hosts is key to predicting risk and can lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms of emergence. Here we use a Bayesian phylodynamic approach to examine cross-species transmission and evolutionary dynamics during a canine distemper virus (CDV) spillover event caus

A serological survey of Bacillus anthracis reveals widespread exposure to the pathogen in free-range and captive lions in Zimbabwe.

Numerous unknown factors influence anthrax epidemiology in multi-host systems, especially at wildlife/livestock/human interfaces. Serology tests for anti-anthrax antibodies in carnivores are useful tools in identifying the presence or absence of Bacillus anthracis in a range. These were employed to ascertain whether the disease pattern followed the recognized high- and low-risk anthrax zonation in Zimbabwe and also to establish whether anthrax was absent from Hwange National Park in which there have been no reported outbreaks. African lions (Panthera leo) (n = 114) drawn from free-range protec

Dive, food, and exercise effects on blood microparticles in Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus): exploring a biomarker for decompression sickness.

Recent studies of stranded marine mammals indicate that exposure to underwater military sonar may induce pathophysiological responses consistent with decompression sickness (DCS). However, DCS has been difficult to diagnose in marine mammals. We investigated whether blood microparticles (MPs, measured as number/μl plasma), which increase in response to decompression stress in terrestrial mammals, are a suitable biomarker for DCS in marine mammals. We obtained blood samples from trained Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus, 4 adult females) wearing time-depth recorders that dove to predetermin

Use of Acoustic Transmitter-Equipped Remote Sedation to Aid in Tracking and Capture of Entangled California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus).

Free-ranging California sea lions ( Zalophus californianus ) with marine debris entanglements were darted with a combination of medetomidine, butorphanol, and midazolam by using acoustic transmitter-equipped darts. Of the 15 animals sedated, 13 (87%) reentered the water and were tracked by using a unidirectional hydrophone. Sea lions that entered the water continued to surface and breathe postsedation. There were three mortalities (20%) during the course of this study due to the following: suspected drowning caused by entrapment under a dock, overdose due to inaccurate weight estimation, and t

Babesia leo n. sp. from lions in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, and its relation to other small piroplasms.

Babesia leo, a small piroplasm isolated from lions in South Africa is described as a distinct species based on a phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene. Intraerythrocytic trophozoite and merozoite stages of B. leo are morphologically indistinguishable from other small piroplasms of felids. Previous studies showed that B. leo was biologically and antigenically distinct from B. felis, which is known to infect wild and domestic felids in South Africa. Molecular characterization showed strong support for the phylogenetic seperation of B. leo as a distinct species from B. felis and other felid

Yellow fever virus outbreak caused declines in survival and modified dispersal of wild golden lion tamarins.

Research Highlight: Ponchon, A., Choquet, R., Martins, A., Ruiz-Miranda, C., Albert, C., & Romano, V. (2026). Yellow fever outbreak temporarily changes dispersal patterns in an endangered primate. Journal of Animal Ecology. https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2656.70250. Infectious diseases can be drivers of wildlife population dynamics, but how they reshape host movement and social organization remains poorly understood. Ponchon et al. (2026) present one of the rare examples where the impact of a disease outbreak on survival can be measured across a population of wild mammals and subsequently linked

Enhanced leukemia prediction using hybrid ant colony and ant lion optimization for gene selection and classification.

Gene selection plays a crucial role in the pre-processing of microarray data, aiming to identify a small set of genes that enhances classification accuracy and reduces costs. Traditional methods, such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy (MRMR), have been widely used, but bio-inspired algorithms like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) have shown promising results. These algorithms are based on natural processes: ACO mimics the foraging behavior of ants, while ALO models the hunting strategy of ant-lion larvae. However, both approaches face

Genetic fine-mapping of body weight and size traits at 120 days of age in Lion-head geese.

BACKGROUND: The Lion-head goose is one of the largest goose breeds all over the word. Body weight and body size traits at 120 days of age (i.e. the slaughter age) are economically important traits, which directly affect the profit of Lion-head goose industry. However, so far few studies have explored the genetic basis of these traits. This study for the first time integrated the single-SNP genome-wide association study (GWAS) and genetic fine-mapping based on whole-genome sequencing data to investigate the genetic architecture of body weight and 11 body size traits at 120 days of age in 504 li

Human procurement of meat from lion (Panthera leo) kills: Costs of disturbance and implications for carnivore conservation.

In Africa, humans and large carnivores compete over access to resources, including prey. Disturbance by humans to kills made by carnivores, often for purposes of obtaining all or portions of the carcass, constitutes a form of human-wildlife conflict. However the occurrence of this practice, known as human kleptoparasitism, and its impact on carnivores has received little scientific attention. We obtained expert opinions from African lion researchers and stakeholders via a standardized questionnaire to characterize the geographic extent and frequency of human kleptoparasitism as it occurs in mo

Molecular Discovery of Filarial Nematode DNA in an Endangered Wild Pinniped (Galapagos Sea Lion, Zalophus wollebaeki).

Rapidly changing environments are contributing to the spread of non-native species and their associated pathogens into new and vulnerable ecosystems, such as the Galapagos archipelago. These pathogens represent a significant threat to emblematic species. The Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki) (GSL) is an endangered and endemic pinniped that is increasingly at risk of acquiring infectious diseases due to interactions with introduced companion animals. Previously, we reported the first detection of antigens from Dirofilaria immitis, the parasite that causes canine heartworm disease, in the

Input compensation of dolphin and sea lion auditory brainstem responses using frequency-modulated up-chirps.

Frequency-modulated "chirp" stimuli that offset cochlear dispersion (i.e., input compensation) have shown promise for increasing auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitudes relative to traditional sound stimuli. To enhance ABR methods with marine mammal species known or suspected to have low ABR signal-to-noise ratios, the present study examined the effects of broadband chirp sweep rate and level on ABR amplitude in bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. "Optimal" chirps were designed based on previous estimates of cochlear traveling wave speeds (using high-pass subtractive masking met

COINFECTION OF CALIFORNIA SEA LION ADENOVIRUS 1 AND A NOVEL POLYOMAVIRUS IN A HAWAIIAN MONK SEAL (NEOMONACHUS SCHAUINSLANDI).

The Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) is an endangered species. Here, we present a clinical case of a 26-yr-old male Hawaiian monk seal (HMS) kept in an aquarium with a history of intermittent anorexia and evidence of renal disease. Histologic examination revealed eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions in the liver. Conventional nested PCR protocols were used to test for viruses, and it tested positive for adenovirus and polyomavirus, and negative for herpesvirus. The adenovirus partial polymerase gene is 100% homologous to that of California sea lion adenovirus 1 (CSLAdV-1). CSLAdV
