Improving the classroom listening skills of children with Down syndrome by using sound-field amplification.

Many children with Down syndrome have fluctuating conductive hearing losses further reducing their speech, language and academic development. It is within the school environment where access to auditory information is crucial that many children with Down syndrome are especially disadvantaged. Conductive hearing impairment which is often fluctuating and undetected reduces the child's ability to extract the important information from the auditory signal. Unfortunately, the design and acoustics of the classroom leads to problems in extracting the speech signal through reduced speech intensity due

Effect of compression ratio in a slow-acting compression hearing aid: paired-comparison judgments of quality.

Paired-comparison judgments of quality were obtained from 20 hearing-impaired listeners (half with a small dynamic range and half with a large dynamic range) for speech-in-noise (vent, apartment, and cafeteria) processed through a slow-acting compression hearing aid. Compression ratio was varied (1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5, and 10:1). Compression threshold, attack time, and release time were fixed. Sound quality judgments were significantly affected by compression ratio, noise, and dynamic range. Preference decreased with increasing compression ratio. The selection of compression ratio. Stress across timescales: differential effects of acute and chronic stress on auditory processing and perception.

Stress has long been linked to auditory dysfunction and altered sound perception, but its effects are often discussed without fully distinguishing between acute and chronic stress timescales. Here, we integrate evidence that acute and chronic stress engage partly overlapping but temporally distinct mechanisms and produce different auditory outcomes. Acute stress triggers rapid neuromodulatory and hormonal responses that can transiently alter auditory filtering, deviance detection, attention, and sound sensitivity, often biasing the system toward heightened salience and vigilance. In contrast,

A loudness model for time-varying sounds predicts asymmetries in estimates of loudness change for sounds that increase or decrease in level.

Previous research has demonstrated a robust asymmetry in loudness judgements for rising and falling level tone stimuli, showing greater loudness and loudness change for rising sounds. In the literature, this has been interpreted to reflect an adaptive perceptual bias, resulting from an evolutionary advantage that increases the margin of safety when reacting to an approaching sound-producing object. The current experiment tested whether a loudness model was able to predict asymmetries in loudness-change judgments for rising and falling sounds, providing an alternative explanation to the adaptiv

Tinnitus loudness in quiet and noise after resection of vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To use a loudness model to assess the influence of loudness recruitment on estimates of the loudness of tinnitus obtained by loudness matching; (2) To compare the effect of background noise on the loudness of tinnitus for individuals who are unilaterally deaf after resection of vestibular schwannoma (VS) and those with idiopathic tinnitus. BACKGROUND: After translabyrinthine resection of VS, patients experience unilateral deafness and tinnitus in the operated ear. Most complain that their tinnitus is more bothersome in noisy environments, unlike those with idiopathic tinnitus.

A dose-response relationship for occupational noise-induced hypertension.

The effect of industrial noise on hypertension prevalence was studied in a group of 1101 female workers in a textile mill in Beijing in 1985. Essentially the entire group had worked in specific workshops in this mill for their full working lives and all had worked for at least five years. The noise levels within the plant were assessed and appear to have been constant since 1954 resulting in a well-defined noise exposure for these workers. A cross-sectional design was used in which blood pressures were determined and questionnaires administered to the workers over a two month period. In additi

P300 and alcohol consumption in normals and individuals at risk for alcoholism. A preliminary report.

Pairs of college student subjects (36 male, 36 female) were matched on age, sex, and personal drinking history. One pair member had a parent who met the DSM III criteria of alcoholism, while the other pair member had no close alcoholic relative. The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was obtained from each subject with auditory stimuli in an "oddball" paradigm. Target stimuli occurred randomly on 20% of the trials in a frequency discrimination task, a relatively easy intensity discrimination task, and a more difficult intensity discrimination task. Subjects indicated when the target item

Tinnitus Suppression by Intracochlear Electrical Stimulation in Single-Sided Deafness: A Prospective Clinical Trial - Part I.

Cochlear implantation is a viable treatment option for tinnitus, but the underlying mechanism is yet unclear. Is the tinnitus suppression due to the reversal of the assumed maladaptive neuroplasticity or is it the shift in attention from the tinnitus to environmental sounds and therefore a reduced awareness that reduces tinnitus perception? In this prospective trial, 10 patients with single-sided deafness were fitted with a cochlear implant to investigate the effect of looped intracochlear electrical stimulation (i.e. stimulation that does not encode environmental sounds) on tinnitus, in an ef

"Measurement" of Tinnitus.

Chronic tinnitus is the persistent sensation of hearing a sound that exists only inside the head. The prevalence of tinnitus in adults in the United States is estimated at 10 to 15%. For about 20% of these individuals the tinnitus is significantly bothersome. Although myriad therapies for tinnitus are offered (often at significant cost), most are not evidence based. Difficulty in the assessment and further development of interventions for tinnitus stems from the limitations of techniques used to evaluate these interventions. Questionnaires are widely available to "measure" (tinnitus can only b

Intracranial Mapping of a Cortical Tinnitus System using Residual Inhibition.

Tinnitus can occur when damage to the peripheral auditory system leads to spontaneous brain activity that is interpreted as sound [1, 2]. Many abnormalities of brain activity are associated with tinnitus, but it is unclear how these relate to the phantom sound itself, as opposed to predisposing factors or secondary consequences [3]. Demonstrating "core" tinnitus correlates (processes that are both necessary and sufficient for tinnitus perception) requires high-precision recordings of neural activity combined with a behavioral paradigm in which the perception of tinnitus is manipulated and accu

Audiometric characteristics of a Dutch family with Muckle-Wells syndrome.

Description of the audiometric and vestibular characteristics of a Dutch family with Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS). Examination of all family members consisted of pure tone audiometry, otoscopy and genetic analysis. In addition, a selected group underwent speech audiometry, vestibulo-ocular examination, acoustic reflex testing and tests assessing loudness scaling, gap detection, difference limen for frequency and speech perception in noise. Linear regression analyses were performed on the audiometric data. Six clinically affected family members participated in this study and all were carriers of

Somatosensory influence on auditory cortical potentials for self-generated sounds during a loudness discrimination task.

Auditory attenuation of self-generated sounds is often attributed to motor prediction based on motor commands. Our previous study (Endo et al., 2025) demonstrated that somatosensory inputs also interact with auditory processing during a rhythmic finger tapping sound generation task. The current study further investigated the mechanism underlying this auditory-somatosensory interaction. We recorded auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) during a loudness discrimination task involving self-generated sounds, which were generated by discrete finger tapping movements pressing on a virtual object

Differences in loudness of positive and negative Schroeder-phase tone complexes as a function of the fundamental frequency.

Tone complexes with positive (m+) and negative (m-) Schroeder phase show large differences in masking efficiency. This study investigated whether the different phase characteristics also affect loudness. Loudness matches between m+ and m- complexes were measured as a function of (1) the fundamental frequency (f0) for different frequency bands in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects, and (2) intensity level in normal-hearing subjects. In normal-hearing subjects, the level of the m+ stimulus was up to 10 dB higher than that of the corresponding m- stimulus at the point of equal loudness.

Effects of background noise level on behavioral estimates of basilar-membrane compression.

Hearing-impaired (HI) listeners often show poorer performance on psychoacoustic tasks than do normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Although some such deficits may reflect changes in suprathreshold sound processing, others may be due to stimulus audibility and the elevated absolute thresholds associated with hearing loss. Masking noise can be used to raise the thresholds of NH to equal the thresholds in quiet of HI listeners. However, such noise may have other effects, including changing peripheral response characteristics, such as the compressive input-output function of the basilar membrane in the

REM sleep enhancement due to rhythmical auditory stimulation in the rat.

From a physiological viewpoint, REM sleep (REMS) is a period during which homeostatic physiological regulations are impaired. In the rat, REMS occurs in two forms respectively characterized by episodes separated by long intervals (single REMS episodes) and by episodes which have short intervals and occur in sequences (REMS clusters). Since the partition of REMS in the form of either single or clustered episodes may reveal how the REMS drive and body homeostatic processes interact in the control of REMS occurrence, we have used this approach to clarify the effects of the rhythmical delivery of

The energy spectrum of an impulse: its relation to hearing loss.

Permanent threshold shifts obtained from 242 chinchillas that were exposed to various impulse noise paradigms have been related to the energy spectra of the impulses. The impulses were generated by three different shock tubes that produced impulse noise spectra whose A-weighted energies showed peaks at 0.25, 1, and 2 kHz. The results show that there is an increasing susceptibility to NIPTS as the audiometric test frequency increases from 0.5 to 16 kHz. This increase in susceptibility to NIPTS is further accentuated by approximately 5 to 10 dB for impulses whose spectra peak at 2 kHz.

Auditory temporal integration and the power function model.

The auditory temporal integration function was studied with the objective of improving both its quantitative description and the specification of its principle independent variable, stimulus duration. In Sec. I, temporal integration data from 20 studies were subjected to uniform analyses using standardized definitions of duration and two models of temporal integration. Analyses revealed that these data were best described by a power function model used in conjunction with a definition of duration, termed assigned duration, that de-emphasized the rise/fall portions of the stimuli. There was a s

Auditory brainstem anomalies in albino cats. I. Evoked potential studies.

The amount of melanin pigmentation in the inner ear is positively correlated with the general pigmentation of the body and specifically with the amount of pigment in the eye. The misrouting of retinofugal projections which accompanies ocular and oculocutaneous albinism has been thought to be a defect in decussation unique to the visual system. Evidence suggests that functional abnormalities may also exist in the auditory systems of albino humans and animals. To evaluate this possibility, evoked potential techniques were used to examine the functional anatomy of decussating brainstem auditory p
