[Nocardia farcinica as the causative agent of a brain abscess in a patient with interstitial lung disease].

This case report describes a two-step protocol for the identification of the causative agent of nocardiosis in a patient with brain abscess, antibiotic susceptibility testing and etiological treatment after neurosurgery. The patient treated with corticosteroids for pulmonary fibrosis and presenting with multiple neurological manifestations was admitted to a neurosurgery clinic. CT and contrast MRI revealed an expansive multilocular lesion 45 x 35 mm in size in the left parietal lobe, differentially diagnosed as malignant glioma. The lesion was biopsied and the histology showed a brain abscess

Role of computed tomography in the diagnosis of rib and lung involvement in tuberculous retromammary abscesses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of rib and lung involvement in tuberculous abscess in the retromammary region. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Eight patients with tuberculous retromammary abscess were examined by CT and the findings were evaluated. A cold abscess (purulent collection with absence of acute inflammation) was aspirated in all cases. Diagnosis was confirmed by acid-fast bacillus culture, or histologic examination. RESULTS: CT showed a relatively well marginated, inhomogeneous, hypodense lesions in all eight cases. Following administration of intra

Red Complex Bacteria as a Hidden Cause of Chronic Lung Abscess: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Common oral pathogens such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia, which form biofilms in the periodontal pockets, are classified together as Red Complex bacteria in Socransky's subgingival cluster model and are key pathogenic bacteria in periodontitis. Oral pathogens play a critical role in pulmonary infections, particularly in the pathogenesis of lung abscesses. Lung abscesses caused by Red Complex bacteria have rarely been described; to our knowledge, few cases have been reported to date. CASE REPORT We present the first documented case of chro

[Report of a Case of Treatment for Unresectable Esophageal Cancer with Esophageal Perforation and Lung Abscess].

A 60-year-old male complaining of fever and dyspnea came to the hospital. The CT scan suggested esophageal perforation, pyothorax, and pneumothorax due to advanced esophageal cancer. When he was transferred to our hospital, he caused a state of shock, and laboratory tests showed both severe renal dysfunction and inflammation. Additional CT scan showed numerous enlarged lymph nodes and mesenteric nodules. We decided to perform palliative surgery including right lower lobectomy, esophagectomy(R2 resection), esophagostomy, gastrostomy, and tube enterostomy. Because postoperative air leakage persi

The Hurricane Lung: A Case of Hydrocarbon Pneumonitis With Abscess Formation Following Fuel Siphoning.

Fuel siphoning is a widespread practice worldwide, but infrequently observed in the United States. Some reports suggest greater incidence of fuel siphoning during the hurricane season. Fuel siphoning is associated with a high risk of hydrocarbon toxicity, often leading to the development of hydrocarbon pneumonitis. This form of exogenous lipoid pneumonia can present acutely with chest pain and dyspnea. While most cases of hydrocarbon pneumonitis resolve spontaneously with supportive care, rarely patients develop life-threatening complications. We present the case of a 56-year-old man who devel

A rare case of community acquired serratia lung abscess in a patient with cardiac bronchus.

The incidence of lung abscess caused by Serratia marcescens is extremely low and is only reported in the immunocompromised population. We present a previously healthy woman with Serratia lung abscess in close proximity with an accessory cardiac bronchus. The patient was treated with appropriate antibiotics which led to complete resolution of the lesion. Our case highlights that individuals without medical co-morbidities may develop atypical lung infections like Serratia when associated with anatomic anomalies.

Lung abscess due to Streptococcus pneumoniae: a case series and brief review of the literature.

Anaerobes used to be the most common cause of community-acquired lung abscess, and Streptococcus species used to be the second most common cause. In recent years, this has been changing. Klebsiella pneumoniae is now an increasing cause of community- acquired lung abscess, but Streptococcus species continue to be major pathogens. Necrotizing pneumonia has generally been regarded as a rare complication of pneumococcal infection in adults. Type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae was the single most common type implicated in necrosis; however, many other serotypes were implicated. This entity predominatel

Streptococcal lung abscesses from a dental focus following tocilizumab: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Concurrent presentation of pulmonary nocardiosis and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is exceptionally rare and diagnostically challenging, given the overlapping clinical and radiological features. We report a 54-year-old female with fever, cough, weight loss, and arthralgia. Chest imaging showed multiple pulmonary nodules; serology revealed positive anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies -proteinase 3, and lung biopsy demonstrated necrotizing granulomatous inflammation with Nocardia species. This led to a dual diagnosis of pulmonary nocardiosis and limited form GPA. The pati

Aspiration pneumonia and primary lung abscess: diagnosis and therapy of an aerobic or an anaerobic infection?

Pneumonia and primary lung abscesses may result from aspiration of infectious material from the oropharyngeal cavity and the upper respiratory tract. Most subjects suffer from an impaired mechanical or immunologic defense, for example alcoholism or dysphagia following stroke. The early course of the disease is uncharacteristic. Necrotizing pneumonia, pulmonary abscesses and the characteristic, foul-smelling, putrid discharge only occur 8-14 days after the initial aspiration event. Although common respiratory pathogens are frequently isolated from the lower airways of these patients, anaerobic

Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia with small abscesses in the tracheo-bronchial mucosa and lung parenchyma.

Abscess formation is uncommon in eosinophilic lung disease. In this paper we present a case of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia in which bronchofiberoscopy revealed scattered small abscesses in the large airways. Pathological examination revealed the presence of inflammatory cells with eosinophilic infiltration in both the bronchial mucosa and lung parenchyma.

A rare case report of Prevotella lung abscess diagnosed using third-generation metagenomic sequencing.

The Prevotella genus consists of obligate anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria that are symbiotic with the oral, intestinal, and vaginal mucosa. While several species of Prevotella have been implicated in pulmonary infections, identification of Prevotella as the causative agent of lung abscess is uncommon because of the requirement for stringent anaerobic culture conditions. In this report, we highlight a case of lung abscess caused by Prevotella salivae and Prevotella veroralis, underscoring the importance of third-generation metagenomic sequencing using devices from Oxford Nanopore Technologies

A Single Lung Abscess Caused by Panton-Valentine Leukocidin-Producing Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

This case report presents a rare occurrence of a single lung abscess caused by Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a 38-year-old immunocompetent man. The patient, of Southeast Asian origin, presented with symptoms of fever, chest pain, cough, and shortness of breath following a recent flu-like illness. Imaging indicated a cavitary lung lesion in the left lower lobe, suggestive of a lung abscess. Initial antibiotic treatment failed, and drainage of the abscess confirmed MRSA with the PVL gene, indicating a community-acquired MRSA inf

Lung abscess following ventilator-associated pneumonia during COVID-19: a retrospective multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing mechanical ventilation (MV) for COVID-19 exhibit an increased risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). The occurrence of lung abscesses following VAP in these patients has been poorly studied. We aimed to describe the incidence, characteristics, risk factors and prognosis of lung abscesses complicating VAP after COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective study in three French intensive care units. Patients admitted for acute respiratory failure with a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 PCR and requiring MV for more than 48 h were included. RESULTS

Nocardia Infection With Adrenal Gland Abscess Mimicking Metastatic Lung Cancer on FDG PET/CT.

We present FDG PET/CT findings of a human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient suspicious for lung cancer with a solitary metastasis to the adrenal gland. Wedge resection of the pulmonary nodules revealed Nocardia infection and a repeat FDG PET/CT imaging after the antibiotic treatment demonstrated complete metabolic response of the adrenal lesion and pulmonary nodules. It should be kept in mind that nocardiosis may present with FDG-avid lesions masquerading as malignancies in immunocompromised patients.

Transbronchial drainage using endobronchial ultrasonography with guide sheath for lung abscess: A case report.

RATIONALE: Lung abscess was previously treated surgically, but is now mainly treated with antibiotics and ideally with direct drainage, although postural drainage canalso be used. PATIENT CONCERNS: A chest abnormal shadow was detected in an 82-year-old man and he was referred to our department in November 2017. On chest computed tomography (CT), a low-density mass shadow was present in the left S8 segment. Lung abscess and lung cancer were considered as differential diagnoses, and treatment with sulbactam sodium/ampicillin sodium (SBT/ABPC) was first initiated for lung abscess. The etiologic
