Exploration of green preparation strategy for Lycium barbarum polysaccharide targeting Bacteroides proliferative and immune-enhancing activities and its potential use in geriatric foods.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is beneficial for elderly people, but its use is limited in geriatric foods due to the lack of comprehensive information on its preparation strategy and physical property. In this study, the low-ester rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) type pectic polysaccharide-protein complexes with varying physicochemical properties, structural characteristics, proliferative activities on Bacteroides, and immune-enhancing activities on RAW 264.7 cells, were obtained by moderate-temperature acid extraction within adjustment of enzymatic and physical pretreatments. LBP prepared b

Lycium chinense Miller fruit extract lowers liver enzyme levels in subjects with mild hepatic dysfunction: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

PURPOSE: In our previous study, we showed that Lycium chinense Miller fruit extract (LFE) exerted hepatoprotective effects in mice. In the current study, we examined the effect of LFE on liver enzyme levels in subjects with mild hepatic dysfunction. METHODS: A total of 90 subjects, aged 19 to 70 years old, with abnormal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, were randomly placed into either an LFE (n = 45) treatment group or a placebo group (n = 45). During the 12-week clinical trial, subjects in each group received either LFE or placebo capsules, and were instructed to take four tablets per

Peptidoglycan isolated from the fruit of Lycium barbarum alleviates liver fibrosis in mice by regulating the TGF-β/Smad7 signaling and gut microbiota.

The hepatoprotective effect of the fruit of Lycium barbarum has been documented in China over millennia. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) were the first macromolecules reported to mitigate liver fibrosis in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-treated mice. Herein, a neutral peptidoglycan, named as LBPW, was extracted from the fruit of Lycium barbarum. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective mechanisms of LBPW. CCl4-induced liver fibrosis mice were administered LBPW (50, 100, 200 mg ·kg-1 ·d-1, i.p.) or (100, 200, 300 mg· kg-1 ·d-1, i.g.) for 6 weeks. We showed that either i.p. or i.g

Lycium barbarum polysaccharide promotes the immunoprotective effects of a recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum vaccine expressing the Trichinella spiralis cathepsin F-like protease 1 gene.

Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a zoonotic disease that poses a substantial risk to human health. At present, vaccines used to prevent trichinellosis are effective, but the production of antibody levels and immunogenicity are low. Adjuvants can increase antibody levels and vaccine immunogenicity. As a result, it is critical to develop an effective adjuvant for the T. spiralis vaccine. Recent research has shown that traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharides with low-toxicity and biodegradability can act as adjuvants in vaccines. In this study, BALB/c mice were

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides as prebiotics prevent colorectal cancer liver metastasis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by modulating gut microbiota-FGF21-PI3K-AKT axis.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) is the leading cause of death in colorectal cancer, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) promotes CRLM. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs), bioactive metabolites of the traditional medicinal plant Lycium barbarum L, inhibit the progression of colorectal cancer and NAFLD by regulating gut microbiota composition. However, their roles in preventing CRLM under NAFLD conditions remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of LBPs on liver metastasis of colorectal cancer in the context of NAFLD and explore i

Lycium barbarum Polysaccharide Ameliorates Heat-Stress-Induced Impairment of Primary Sertoli Cells and the Blood-Testis Barrier in Rat via Androgen Receptor and Akt Phosphorylation.

Male infertility induced by heat stress has been attracting more and more attention. Heat stress not only causes apoptosis of spermatocytes but also has adverse effects on Sertoli cells, further damaging spermatogenesis. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is the main bioactive component of Lycium barbarum, which has a protective effect on male reproduction, but its mechanism is still unclear. In this study, our results proved that LBP blocked the inhibitory effect on the proliferation activity of Sertoli cells after heat stress, reversed the dedifferentiation of Sertoli cells induced by heat

Characterization, antioxidant effects of Lycium ruthenicum Murr. Polysaccharides and protective effects against Oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neurotoxicity through inhibition of the RAS - RAF - MEK - ERK signaling pathway.

Oxaliplatin is a frequently used chemotherapeutic agent; however, oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OIPN) is a prevalent adverse effect for which no effective treatment is currently available. Lycium ruthenicum Murr. (LR), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that is also consumed as food, is rich in polysaccharides. However, the influence of alcohol precipitation concentration on the structure and bioactivities of polysaccharides derived from LR (LRPs) and the effect of LRPs on OIPN remain unclear. Herein, three novel LRPs (LRP-20, LRP-50, and LRP-80) were isolated using 20 %, 50 % a

Protein-polyphenol-polysaccharide ternary complex as a multifunctional pickering stabilizer for Lycium barbarum seed oil encapsulation: Antioxidant activity, stable delivery, and mechanisms based on interfacial behaviors.

Pickering emulsions present an effective method for delivering functional oils while addressing their inherent water insolubility. However, the stability of these emulsions can be compromised by complex composition of functional oils and their susceptibility to oxidation. This study developed a composite stabilizer consisting of whey protein isolate (WPI), grape seed proanthocyanidins (OPCs), and Lycii fructus polysaccharides (LFP). Alkali-prepared WPI-OPCs were covalently modified with LFP via Maillard reaction, resulting in smaller particles with increased roughness. The conjugate exhibited
