The application of machine learning algorithms to the analysis of electromyographic patterns from arthritic patients.

The main aim of our study was to investigate the possibility of applying machine learning techniques to the analysis of electromyographic patterns (EMG) collected from arthritic patients during gait. The EMG recordings were collected from the lower limbs of patients with arthritis and compared with those of healthy subjects (CO) with no musculoskeletal disorder. The study involved subjects suffering from two forms of arthritis, viz, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and hip osteoarthritis (OA). The analysis of the data was plagued by two problems which frequently render the analysis of this type of da

Application of two machine learning algorithms to genetic association studies in the presence of covariates.

BACKGROUND: Population-based investigations aimed at uncovering genotype-trait associations often involve high-dimensional genetic polymorphism data as well as information on multiple environmental and clinical parameters. Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer a straightforward analytic approach for selecting subsets of these inputs that are most predictive of a pre-defined trait. The performance of these algorithms, however, in the presence of covariates is not well characterized. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this manuscript, we investigate two approaches: Random Forests (RFs) and Multivariate A

Comparison of the diagnostic performance of machine learning algorithms for differentiating iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia.

Accurate discrimination between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and thalassemia trait (TT) is clinically essential for the effective management of patients with hypochromic microcytic anemia. Although numerous discrimination indices based on red blood cell (RBC) parameters have been proposed, their diagnostic accuracy remains suboptimal and highly population-specific. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model to enhance discriminative performance. We utilized a derivation cohort of 376 patients (IDA, n = 186; TT, n = 190) for model development and internal validation, and

Estimating aman and aus rice area in Bangladesh using sentinel-1 imagery and machine learning algorithms.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is Bangladesh's staple crop, cultivated across three distinct seasons: Rabi (Boro), Kharif-1 (Aus) and Kharif-2 (Aman). This study develops an integrated, cloud-independent framework for mapping Aus and Aman rice areas using freely available Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery; to accomplish this, supervised machine-learning (ML) algorithms are used in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Time-series dual-polarization (VV and VH) backscatter data were analyzed for June-November 2021 (Aman) and March-August 2022 (Aus). Four ML models such as Classi

Early Risk Factor Prediction in Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis Using Feature Selection and Machine Learning Algorithms.

Chronic kidney disease, CKD in short, is a kind of long-term kidney illness in which rapid deterioration of kidney function is observed over a period of time. Unlike other organs, this damage in kidney function cannot be recovered and reversed as well. Moreover, in its early stages, asymptomatic renal disease is highly prevalent, making early identification with conventional clinical approaches difficult. Thus, early and accurate detection of risk factors is a very challenging step in CKD diagnosis. This research work showed earlier and effective identification of risk factors using notable fea

Leveraging machine learning algorithms to assess the impact of cervical cancer early detection on patients' survival.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer morbidity and mortality remain a significant global health challenge worldwide, with an age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) of 7.3/100,000 in 2022. Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), especially sub-Saharan Africa, have the highest incidence and mortality of cervical cancer, with 70% to 90% of cervical cancer cases and deaths, respectively. Despite Rwanda's considerable efforts, cervical cancer remained the second most prevalent cancer among Rwandan women in 2023. Although numerous studies have explored the relationship between early detection and better outc

Exploring the potential of five machine learning regression algorithms for noninvasive blood pressure estimation with photoplethysmography.

Objective: Blood pressure (BP) is a vital factor for human health and survival, and its elevation and fluctuations can have dangerous consequences on an individual's well-being. Traditional BP measurement methods-including cuff-based devices and invasive arterial catheters-are unsuitable for continuous monitoring in daily life: cuffs are intermittent and uncomfortable, whereas arterial lines provide continuous data but are invasive and confined to clinical settings (e.g., ICUs/ORs). In response to this requirement, we propose a cuff-less, continuous, and noninvasive system for BP measurement u

Hypothesis: Net benefit as an objective function during development of machine learning algorithms for medical applications.

Net benefit is the most widely used metric for evaluating the clinical utility of medical prediction models. The approach applies decision analytic theory to weight true and false positives depending on the relative consequences of different decision outcomes. It is plausible that there are at least some machine learning scenarios where optimization of the objective function during model development will not optimize net benefit during model evaluation. We therefore hypothesize that optimizing net benefit during model development will in some cases ultimately lead to higher clinical utility th

Predicting one-year overall survival in patients with AITL using machine learning algorithms: a multicenter study.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a life-threatening hematological malignancy. For patients with poor prognosis, especially those with expected survival less than 1 year, the benefits from traditional regimens are extremely limited. Therefore, we aimed to develop an interpretable machine learning (ML)-based model to predict the 1-year overall survival (OS) of AITL patients. A total of 223 patients with AITL treated in 4 centers in China were included. Five ML algorithms were built to predict 1-year outcome based on 16 baseline characteristics.
