Magnetic seizure therapy is a novel form of focal convulsive treatment wherein magnetic field passes through the scalp and skull without impedance. In many ways, it has the potential to be superior to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as the anesthesia-associated side effects and cognitive impairments are less. It also may be an alternative for those who do not opt for ECT because of the stigma associated with it.

Early detection and treatment of disease is the most important component of a favorable prognosis. Biomedical researchers have thus invested tremendous effort in improving imaging techniques and treatment methods. Over the past decade, concepts and tools derived from nanotechnology have been applied to overcome the problems of conventional techniques for advanced diagnosis and therapy. In particular, advances in nanoparticle technology have created new paradigms for theranostics, which is defined as the combination of therapeutic and diagnostic agents within a single platform. In this Account,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To present state-of-the-art transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, especially when it is used in psychiatric disorders, on the basis of an exhaustive literature search from 2006 to date (June 2008) on TMS papers published in Medline and Embase. Other references and comments from our own experience started 8 years ago have also been taken into account.
RECENT FINDINGS: The mechanism of action of TMS is now better understood. There is strong evidence of the safety and tolerability of TMS when standard protocols are used. The efficacy of the stimulation of the dorsol

For decades, fluoroscopic arthrography was the only method available to image a joint with contrast enhancement. Advances in CT led to the natural development of CT arthrography. Development of MRI and its capability for multiplanar imaging led to direct magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA). This technique has been performed since 1987 and has surpassed CT arthrography in popularity in the United States. Indirect MRA developed subsequently to offer a less invasive alternative. This article presents an overview of direct MRA and addresses joint-specific issues regarding direct MRA. An overview

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a new non-invasive method to investigate the central nervous system. Initially it was used to assess the functional integrity of the pyramidal pathways but more recently various other aspects of brain function have been studied including cortical excitability. By localised interference with brain function, it is possible to use TMS to assess the relationship between various brain regions and cognitive functions. The therapeutic effect of TMS has been explored in the treatment of neurological diseases and psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, cerebel

INTRODUCTION: MR angiography (MRA) is a group of MRI techniques capable of producing projectional images of arteries and veins without the use of ionising radiation or catheters.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review describes two of the main techniques, time-of-flight (TOF) MRA and phase contrast MRA, that provide high signal-intensity vessels due to flow phenomena, and a third main technique, contrast-enhanced MRA, which relies on intravenous injection of contrast media. Contrary to the iodine-containing x-ray contrast media, the contrast media for MRA are not nephrotoxic, making contrast-enhan

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a non-invasive imaging method for examining the biliary and pancreatic ducts. The technique uses heavily T2-weighted imaging, which produces high signal from bile and other static fluids by virtue of their long T2 time, while suppressing background signal. Fast scanning techniques, particularly half-Fourier fast spin-echo techniques, are continuing to improve image resolution and allow scans within short breath-holds, reducing the effects of respiratory movement. The MRCP method has reached a level of resolution and reliability where it may

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) uses MR imaging to visualize fluid in the biliary and pancreatic ducts as high signal intensity on T2-weighted sequences; it is the newest modality for biliary and pancreatic duct imaging. MRCP is of proven utility in a variety of biliary and pancreatic diseases, including choledocholithiasis, congenital anatomic variants, chronic pancreatitis, post-cholecystectomy disorders, and neoplastic duct obstruction. MRCP is an evolving technique, but it has reached the stage of development where it is clinically useful and of comparable accuracy to co

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is emerging as one of the most promising, but controversial areas in breast imaging. In recent years interest has been shown in the method because of improved MRI technology and the use of gadolinium-based contrast media for lesion enhancement. Dynamic contrast medium-enhanced MRI has a sensitivity of more than 96% for the detection of breast cancer, because the breast cancer image is enhanced after intravenous administration of gadolinium. MRI seems to be more accurate than other imaging modalities for measuring the size of the cancer, and for detecting multic

Magnetic resonance (MR) cholangiopancreatography is a new, noninvasive method of assessing the biliary tract and pancreatic duct. MRCP sequences are based on heavily T2-weighted pulse sequences, resulting in the bile ducts and pancreatic duct having very high signal intensity. Preliminary results indicate that the results of MRCP in most biliary tract diseases are similar to those of more invasive techniques of direct cholangiography, such as, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) uses magnetic resonance (MR) pulse sequences in which static fluid appears bright against a low signal or dark background. When these MR images are subjected to postprocessing techniques, they produce images that resemble the pancreatograms obtained using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The MRCP examination is easily performed, is noninvasive, requires no contrast injection, and has no known complications. The place of MRCP in the evaluation of disorders of the pancreas is not yet fully established, but several well-defi

The field of MRA has progressed to a stage at which several clinical applications are of obvious value, including the diagnosis of cerebral aneurysms, venous disorders and disease of the carotid bifurcation. Additionally spin echo images are useful in studying the parenchyma and this together with MRA works to be an excellent diagnostic package in the presurgical workup of patients with cerebral vascular abnormalities. With further technical improvements, it seems likely that important applications of MRA will also be found in the diagnosis of peripheral artery disease, stenosis of the renal a

The technique of transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex is a new neurophysiological examination of the central motor pathways. In clinical application a reduced MEP/M wave amplitude ratio had a higher correlation with hyperreflexia than did a delayed MEP onset latency. The inhibitory period (IP) which is a transient suppression of muscle action potentials following motor evoked potentials (MEP) by magnetic cortical stimulation is caused primarily by inhibitory process in the motor cortex, because the duration of IP did not depend on the amplitude of MEPs, MEP distribution over t

Recently, magnetic microporous organic networks (MMONs) have emerged as a novel class of adsorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). By integrating the unique properties of microporous organic networks (MONs) and magnetic nanoparticles, MMONs exhibit advantages such as designable structures, facile synthesis, diverse architectures, high specific surface area, and excellent stability, garnering widespread attention in the field of sample pretreatment. The current strategies for preparing MMONs mainly include in-situ growth, post-synthetic modification (PSM), and composite preparation.

We report an experimental study on the self-assembly and atomic force microscopy (AFM) manipulation of ligand-free Fe/Fe3O4 nanocubes synthesized via a gas aggregation cluster source, a method that eliminates steric and capillary effects typical of wet-chemistry routes. This approach isolates magnetic dipolar and surface forces as the primary drivers of cluster formation. Sub-20 nm nanocubes spontaneously organize into close-packed two-dimensional arrays with dominant {100}-{100} contacts, exhibiting a preferential [001] magnetic easy axis consistent with Fe-core-driven anisotropy. Magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic, composed of a voltage-controlled magnetoelectric writing module and a spin-orbit readout module, is highly expected to substitute the silicon-based transistors and enable energy-efficient and scalable computing. Nevertheless, the output voltage of readout module based on spin-to-charge conversion is far less than the minimum magnetoelectric writing voltage, which greatly restricts the cascading function of MESO logic. Here, we first propose a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-enhanced MESO logic to implement giant readout signal. Up to 1.5 mV output voltag

Magnetization switching by charge current without a magnetic field is essential for device applications and information technology. It generally requires a current-induced out-of-plane spin polarization beyond the capability of conventional ferromagnet/heavy-metal systems, where the current-induced spin polarization aligns in-plane orthogonal to the in-plane charge current and out-of-plane spin current. Here, a new approach is demonstrated for magnetic-field-free switching by fabricating a van-der-Waals magnet and oxide Fe3GeTe2/SrTiO3 heterostructure. This new magnetic-field-free switching is
