Regulatory mutation accumulation drives multi-trait phenotypic expansion in silver-adapted Escherichia coli.

UNLABELLED: Predicting when adaptive mutations produce narrow, condition-specific effects versus coordinated multi-trait phenotypic expansion remains a central challenge in evolutionary biology. Two-component response systems (TCRSs) play a key role in bacterial environmental sensing and transcriptional regulation, yet how regulatory variation shapes broader adaptive outcomes remains poorly understood. Here, we reanalyze and integrate our previously published experimental evolution, whole-genome sequencing, and transcriptomic data with new high-throughput phenotypic profiling, and competitive

Protocol for a multi-centre, definitive randomised controlled trial of the effectiveness of Individual Placement and Support for employment support among people with alcohol and drug dependence.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment is highly prevalent in populations with alcohol and drug dependence and the employment support offered in addiction-treatment programmes is ineffective. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based intervention for competitive employment. IPS has been extensively studied in severe mental illness and physical disabilities, but there have been no formal randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in alcohol and drug dependence. The Individual Placement and Support for Alcohol and Drug Dependence (IPS-AD) study should determine whether IPS for patients with alcohol

Stressing the limits of capillary blood in anti-doping analysis: perspectives on alkylamine-like stimulants and carbonic anhydrase II inhibitors in result management.

The establishment of an anti-doping rule violation extends beyond the mere detection of a prohibited substance. Current interpretation criteria rely primarily on urinary concentration estimates, which may be misleading due to high interindividual variability or pharmacokinetics characteristics of doping agents. This study investigates the potential of capillary blood collected through volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) as a complementary matrix to urine for supporting results management in doping control. Comparative concentration-time profiling in urine and capillary blood was perform

2D longitudinal LV speckle tracking strain pattern in breast cancer survivors: sports activity vs exercise as prescription model.

Prevention strategies are important to optimize and to manage heart care in breast cancer survivors. Regular physical activity at moderate intensity is normally proposed to maintain myocardial performance; however, no data is available about the different impact of different levels of physical exercise. 2D speckle tracking echocardiography (2DSTE) is an accepted method for early detection of myocardial dysfunction. The study aims to monitor the cardiac performances in breast cancer survivors by 2DSTE analysis to manage sports activity vs physical activity. Two groups of previous breast cancer

Is it real? Can we win? Is it worth doing? Managing risk and reward in an innovation portfolio.

Minor innovations make up most of a company's development portfolio, on average, but they never generate the growth companies seek. The solution, says Day--the Geoffrey T. Boisi Professor of Marketing and a codirector of the Mack Center for Technological Innovation at Wharton--is for companies to undertake a systematic, disciplined review of their innovation portfolios and increase the number of major innovations at an acceptable level of risk. Two tools can help them do this. The first, called the risk matrix, graphically reveals the distribution of risk across a company's entire innovation p

Case III: Managing conflict--the case of the faculty stuck in the middle.

The need for administrative faculty members to have superior leadership and management skills to handle their increasingly complex responsibilities is well established. As a part of the 2000-01 ADEA Leadership Institute curriculum, fellows were responsible for developing situational case studies for a faculty development workshop to develop participants' leadership and management skills. The case presented here involved managing conflicts in the dental academic setting. The foundation of conflict management centers on communication techniques including transparent communication, open discussio

Lower Extremity Injuries in Ice Hockey: Current Concepts.

Ice hockey is a fast-paced, collision sport requiring tremendous skill and finesse, yet ice hockey can be a harsh and violent game. It has one of the highest musculoskeletal injury rates in all of competitive sports. Razor sharp skates, aluminum sticks and boards made from high density polyethylene (HDPE), all contribute to the intrinsic hazards of the game. The objective of this article is to review evaluation, management, and return-to-the-rink guidelines after common lower extremity ice hockey injuries.

Isolated Teres Major Rupture: A case report with a suggested dedicated imaging protocol and review of the literature.

Isolated injuries to the teres major muscle occur in competitive sporting activities such as baseball pitching, hockey and tennis. We report a similar event of a physically fit man sustaining an isolated teres major rupture while waterskiing. Non-operative management was chosen, with pain resolution and no appreciable functional limitations at follow up. Because teres major muscle injury was suspected at the time of imaging, we present a dedicated imaging protocol to optimize assessment for teres major injury.

Ulnar collateral ligament injuries in the throwing athlete.

Repetitive valgus forces on the throwing elbow place significant stress on that joint. This stress can cause structural damage and injury to the ulnar collateral ligament. Many acute injuries of the throwing elbow are caused by repetitive chronic wear. Although much work has been done on injury prevention in youth who are pitchers, overuse injury in throwing sports constitutes an epidemic. Failing nonsurgical management, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction is a viable option to return the throwing athlete to competition.

'High-health, high-performance' horses: risk mitigation strategies for OIE-listed diseases.

The 'high-health, high-performance' (HHP) horse concept has been developed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) together with the F6ddration Equestre Internationale and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. This concept is outlined in the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (Chapter 4.16). It aims to address impediments to the international movement of competition horses through a harmonised, practically feasible, globally applicable framework based on simplified certification requirements for the temporary importation of HHP horses and for their return to their

THE NONOPERATIVE REHABILITATION OF A TRAUMATIC COMPLETE ULNAR COLLATERAL LIGAMENT TEAR OF THE ELBOW IN A HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER: A CASE REPORT.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Injuries frequently occur in competitive wrestling, with the elbow joint representing about 25% of all injuries. Specific to the elbow, the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) can be injured traumatically from takedowns in wrestling. In athletes with complete UCL tears, surgical management is often recommended with nonoperative management resulting in less favorable outcomes. The purpose of this case report is to present a nonoperative criterion-based rehabilitation program for a high school wrestler with a complete UCL tear of the elbow. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old ma
