Between January 1996 and January 2001 28 patients (nine females, nineteen males) with 35 fractures were treated by observation and soft diet only. Patients with isolated high condylar neck fractures were not included. The mean age at time of trauma was 35.6 years (5/80). Only patients with normal occlusion and radiologically undisplaced fractures were included. The follow-up time was 15 weeks on average (8/33). The patients did not undergo any active treatment. They just received the instruction to reduce mouth opening and to take a soft diet for 4 weeks. During the first 2 weeks after the tra

PURPOSE: Many studies focusing on the pattern of presentation of mandibular fractures are inconclusive. This is largely due to a multifactorial involvement of associated factors and the role of anatomic factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed a 10-year retrospective analysis of the pattern of presentation of mandibular fractures at an urban level I trauma center in Washington, DC, and the significance of the variables in association with the fractures. These include mechanism of action, age group, illicit drug use, seasonal variation, and the incidence of multiple fracture sites. We also l

PURPOSE: This study assessed the surgical complications after open treatment for fractures of the mandibular condylar process.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 178 patients with unilateral fractures of the mandibular condylar process, 85 treated closed and 93 treated open, were included in this study. A tabulation of surgical findings and intraoperative and postoperative complications was prospectively performed. Standardized animating facial photographs were obtained at several postsurgical intervals and were examined and scored by a prosthodontist and an orthodontist for signs of facial ner

We undertook a retrospective study of all isolated mandibular fractures which had required active management over a 1-year period at the Maxillofacial Unit at Newcastle General Hospital. Patients with single or multiple fractures of the mandible were included in the study, if there were other simultaneous fractures of the facial skeleton, those patients were excluded. All case notes and radiographs were reviewed by a single operator. A total of 202 cases of fractured mandible were identified of which 115 fulfilled the selection criteria of: isolated fracture, no previous facial fracture, treat

The lag screw technique for treatment of simple median and paramedian fractures of the mandible is reemphasized. Major advantages over bone-plate fixation are the rapid application since adapting and bending of a bone plate is obviated as well as the lower costs of the osteosynthesis material. A review of 12 patients with fractures of the anterior mandible who had lag screws placed for fracture treatment showed that it is a successful method of providing rigid internal fixation associated with a low postsurgical complication rate.

Fifty-two patients with fracture of the mandibular angle were treated by extraoral open reduction and internal fixation using the AO reconstruction bone plate (Synthes, Paoli, PA). None were placed into postsurgical maxillomandibular fixation. Four patients developed early infections requiring incision and drainage (7.5%). One patient required removal of the hardware after the fracture had healed. The use of the AO reconstruction bone plate for fractures of the mandibular angle was found to be very predictable and was associated with a low rate of complications.

To evaluate current trends in facial trauma, records from 1,067 patients sustaining 1,515 mandibular fractures from 1979 to 1989 were reviewed. The greatest number of fractures occurred between the ages of 20 to 29 years. Sex distribution was approximately three males to one female. Altercations were found to have caused about half of the fractures, and motor vehicle accidents accounted for nearly one-third. Angle fractures were most common, constituting 26.7% of the total. The most common site of mandibular fracture resulting from altercation was the angle (39.1%); condylar, symphysis, and al

Sensory status of the inferior alveolar nerve was monitored in 133 patients with 150 fractures in the region of the mandibular canal treated with rigid internal fixation preoperatively and 6 weeks postoperatively. Eighty-five of the patients were reevaluated on final follow-up at an average of 15.9 months. Preoperative sensory disturbance (58.5%) correlated significantly only with the presence of fracture displacement. The occurrence of postoperative paresthesia (76.0% at 6.2 weeks, 46.6% at 15.9 months) correlated significantly with the degree of mandibular edentulousness. Patients with edent

Long-term follow-up findings in 29 patients having had childhood condylar fractures and 13 patients having had childhood mandibular body fractures combined with condylar fractures are presented. In only 12% of all cases moderate to severe mandibular growth abnormalities were observed. About 2/3 of these patients showed growth retardation on the condylar fracture side. 1/3 of this group, however, demonstrated more pronounced growth on the fracture side compared to the nonfracture side. Cephalometric measurements proved to be the most effective method for evaluation of growth disorders, whereas

The combination of chin trauma and bleeding from the ear should alert the physician to the possibility of a mandibular fracture. Not all hemotympanums represent basilar skull fractures, especially when they occur in association with chin trauma. Diagnosis of mandibular condylar fractures or temporomandibular joint disruptions can be very difficult. A high index of suspicion and a proper choice of imaging modalities are necessary to ensure a timely diagnosis.

Successful treatment of mandibular fractures involves proper fracture reduction and immobilization for an adequate length of time. A simple wire fixation technique that can be used in many situations involves suspension wiring from the base of the anterior nasal spine to a pair of circummandibular wires. The technique may be used alone or adjunctively with other methods of fixation. It offers several advantages over other methods, particularly in the treatment of pediatric mandibular fractures.

During the period 1964-73, 286 patients were treated for mandibular fractures. 229 patients (80%) attended the follow-up examination. The length of observation was from 1 to 9 years. The treatment and the follow-up evaluations in the 229 patients are described. Early fracture treatment has been the objective, also in patients who have undergone severe cerebral traumas. Antibiotic prophylaxis was implemented in cases of compound fractures. Preservation of teeth and tooth buds in the line of fracture was attempted. Clinical infection occurred in 0.4% of the patients. At the follow-up examination

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown the increased risk of mandibular angle fractures associated with incompletely erupted mandibular third molars. But only a few reports analysed in detail the relationship of the status of eruption of this tooth and this type of fracture.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of the eruption status of incompletely erupted mandibular third molars on the incidence of mandibular angle fractures.
METHODS: Four hundred and thirty-six mandibular halves in 218 patients with mandibular fractures, aged between 15 and 40 years old, were

Mandibular condylar fractures are common mandibular injuries in children. Conservative treatment is generally favored because of the remodeling capacity of the growing condyle, although rehabilitation protocols and the criteria for operative treatment remain variable. This systematic review synthesized current evidence on the clinical and radiographic outcomes of conservative management of pediatric mandibular condylar fractures. The review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 and included original clinical studies published between 2016 and 2026. Ten studies met the predefined eligibility c

BACKGROUND: Comminuted fractures of the jaws are complex injuries requiring special attention. In the past, treatment included closed reduction using maxillomandibular fixation. With advancements in technology and fixation systems, open reduction became a prevalent option. These fractures are difficult to reconstruct during the primary treatment phase, thus resulting in higher complication rates. The introduction of three-dimensional (3D) planning and printing brought about superior outcomes, yet these focus on secondary reconstruction due to the need for outsourcing planning and titanium prin

This retrospective observational study evaluates the trans-tragal approach for the treatment of mandibular head and neck condylar fractures. From January 2009 to May 2024, 34 patients (20 males, 14 females, mean age 34 years) with 36 condylar fractures were treated using this approach. Surgical outcomes were assessed based on occlusal relationship, maximum mouth opening, and facial nerve function (House-Brackmann scale). Postoperative imaging included computed tomography scans, with follow-ups at 1, 3, 6 months, and 1 year. Complications such as wound infection, hematoma, and salivary fistula
