Lifelong physiology of a former marathon world-record holder: the pros and cons of extreme cardiac remodeling.

In a 77-year-old former world-record-holding male marathoner (2:08:33.6), this study sought to investigate the impact of lifelong intensive endurance exercise on cardiac structure, function, and the trajectory of functional capacity (determined by maximal oxygen consumption, V̇o2max) throughout the adult lifespan. As a competitive runner, our athlete (DC) reported performing up to 150-300 miles/wk of moderate-to-vigorous exercise and sustained 10-15 h/wk of endurance exercise after retirement from competition. DC underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing in 1970 (aged 27 yr), 1991 (ag

Soft-Tissue Vibrations and Fatigue During Prolonged Running: Does an Individualized Midsole Hardness Play a Role?

Footwear has the potential to reduce soft-tissue vibrations (STV) but responses are highly subject-specific. Recent evidence shows that compressive garments minimizing STV have a beneficial effect on neuromuscular (NM) fatigue. The aim was to determine whether an individualized midsole hardness can minimize STV and NM fatigue during a half marathon. Twenty experienced runners were recruited for three visits: a familiarization session including the identification of midsole minimizing and maximizing STV amplitude (MIN and MAX, respectively), and two half marathon sessions at 95% of speed at the

Development of of pseudoanemia in marathon runners during a 20-day road race.

We measured RBC count, blood hemoglobin concentration, and related hematologic factors in 12 male marathon runners during a 20-day, 312-mile road race. The RBC and hemoglobin levels decreased significantly, from 5.17 million per cubic millimeter and 16.0 g/dL, respectively, to 4.36 million per cubic millimeter and 13.4 g/dL. Although the runners became marginally anemic during the race, their running speeds were not significantly changed. There were no abnormal clinical signs other than rare instances of hematuria. This study indicates that a sudden increase in long-distance running mileage ab

Nationality patterns of the fastest marathon runners across age groups in the Berlin marathon.

While the dominance of elite East African marathoners is well-established, little is known about the nationality distribution of the fastest age group marathoners. This study examined how the nationality distribution of the fastest marathon runners varies across age groups and sexes in the 'Berlin Marathon'. We analysed race data from 825,886 finishers (627,962 men and 197,807 women) of the 'Berlin Marathon' from 1999 to 2024. Finishers were grouped by five-year age brackets, sex and nationality. We examined performance across five analytical layers: (1) all runners, (2) top 100, (3) top 30, (

Jim Peters' collapse in the 1954 Vancouver Empire Games marathon.

On 7 August 1954, the world 42 km marathon record holder, Jim Peters, collapsed repeatedly during the final 385 metres of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games marathon held in Vancouver, Canada. It has been assumed that Peters collapsed from heatstroke because he ran too fast and did not drink during the race, which was held in windless, cloudless conditions with a dry-bulb temperature of 28 degrees C. Hospital records made available to us indicate that Peters might not have suffered from exertional heatstroke, which classically produces a rectal temperature > 42 degrees C, cerebral effec

Comparison of P wave indices between ultramarathon athletes and general population.

High-intensity endurance exercise is linked to increased atrial fibrillation (AF) risk. P wave indices are established AF risk markers, but their role in ultramarathon athletes is unexplored. This study aimed to compare P wave indices between ultramarathon athletes and healthy controls. This cross-sectional study enrolled 74 ultramarathon athletes and 38 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (2:1 ratio). Athletes had completed ≥1 race of ≥100 km or ≥60 km in the past year. Participants with AF, atrial flutter, cardiovascular diseases, or structural heart abnormalities were excluded. Resting

Outrunning the grim reaper: longevity of the first 200 sub-4 min mile male runners.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of running a sub-4 min mile on longevity. It was hypothesised that there would be an increase in longevity for runners who successfully completed a sub-4 min mile compared with the general population. METHODS: As part of this retrospective cohort study, the Sub-4 Alphabetic Register was used to extract the first 200 athletes to run a sub-4 min mile. Each runner's date of birth, date of their first successful mile attempt, current age (if alive) or age at death was compared with the United Nations Life Tables to determine the difference in each runner's curr

Submaximal force-velocity relationships during mountain ultramarathon: Data from the field.

This study presents a novel method for evaluating the submaximal velocity-force (V(F)) relationship in mountain ultramarathon races using crowdsourced data from Strava.com. The dataset includes positional data from 408 participants of the 171-km UTMB® 2023 race (9,850-m D+). The race was divided into 100-m segments. The mean net propulsive force and velocity were computed for each segment to describe the submaximal V(F) relationship as a rational function of three parameters. F1: propulsive force at 1 m · s-1; V0: theoretical maximum velocity on flat terrain; C: curvature parameter (the lower

The fastest 24-hour ultramarathoners are from Eastern Europe.

Ultramarathon running is of increasing popularity, where the time-limited 24-hour run is one of the most popular events. Although we have a high scientific knowledge about different topics for this specific race format, we do not know where the best 24-hour runners originate from and where the fastest races are held. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the origin of these runners and the fastest race locations. A machine learning model based on the XG Boost algorithm was built to predict running speed based on the athlete´s age, gender, country of origin and the country where t

Decoding Ultramarathon: Muscle Damage as the Main Impediment to Performance.

The biological determinants of performance have been well described for running races up to and including the marathon (42.2 km). Ultramarathon is more complex. Events range from 50 to 5000 km in single or multiple stages, are contested in various environments and terrains, and force athletes to contend with diverse performance-limiting issues such as fueling, hydrating, gastrointestinal distress, muscle damage, and sleep deprivation. Ultramarathons are not simply "long marathons." Nevertheless, scientific developments over the past decade have inched us toward a more complete picture of the p

On the importance of studying ultra-marathon.

Here, we argue that the importance of studying ultra-marathon performance is threefold. First, since ultra-marathon pushes the boundaries of human endurance performance (exposing participants to significant physiological stresses), it is a valuable model to investigate the adaptive responses to both extreme loads and stresses on the human body. Second, it would help to identify potential and detrimental physiological variations related to these events, pinpointing potential adverse reactions to multiple regulatory and physiological systems. Finally, it would help to inform aspects of training
