PURPOSE: This paper presents computed tomography (CT) features of three patients with primary synovial sarcoma of the lung (PSSL) who came to our attention and underwent surgery; reviews of the literature on this rare thoracic tumour are also presented.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients, all men, with a mean age of 58 years, underwent clinical and radiological re-evaluation after receiving a histological diagnosis. None of the patients had multifocal disease or other concomitant neoplasms. All patients had undergone both chest X-rays and computed tomography, and two had also been studied wi

A 73-year-old man was admitted complaining of chest pain and weight loss. A chest X-ray film and chest CT scan showed a tumorous mass in the anterior mediastinum with moderate pleural effusion. Percutaneous needle biopsy specimens from the mass resulted in a diagnosis of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus. Laboratory findings on admission showed marked leukocytosis with no evidence of infection or bone marrow metastasis. The level of serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was abnormally high (79.2 pg/ml, normal < 30). Carcinoma cells in the specimen showed

Primary hemangioma of the mediastinum is extremely rare. Herein, we present a unique case of hemangioma mimicking left atrial mass in the posterior mediastinum. We reviewed the literature and found 17 other hemangiomas in the posterior mediastinum. Herein, we summarize the age, gender, symptoms, diagnostic methods, image diagnosis, size, treatments, histologic features, outcomes, and follow-up of 17 cases. Most of the cases were asymptomatic and were accidentally detected in chest radiographs. Diagnostic methods mainly included chest X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imag

A 36-year-old man, who had never been detected abnormalities on an annual chest X-ray check up, presented with a sudden onset of right-sided chest pain and fever. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed an anterior mediastinal mass with necrosis or hemorrhage and right pleural effusion. Neither computed tomography-guided biopsy nor video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) yielded definitive histological diagnosis due to insufficiency of the sample. For diagnosis and treatment, we performed thymectomy. Histopathologically, the tumor was almost entirely necrotic with few viable tumor cells on

INTRODUCTION: Pericardial cysts are considered as a rare congenital abnormality, mostly found incidentally. The estimated incidence of pericardial cyst is 1:100,000 and represent approximately 6% of all mediastinal masses. Patients can present with symptoms similar to acute chest pain or right-sided heart failure or can be asymptomatic.
PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female who is known to have hypertension and hypothyroidism presented to the breast clinic with left breast mass that was proved by core needle biopsy as proliferative breast lesion. During the preoperative assessment, the patient r

A routine chest X-ray in a 52-year-old man revealed a widening of the posterosuperior mediastinum and the patient was hospitalized on the suspicion of having a mediastinal mass lesion. Further investigations revealed an anterior cervicothoracic meningocele (intrathoracic meningocele), the dural herniation passing through two large midline congenital openings of the C7-T3 vertebral bodies which appeared partially fused and associated with other regional skeletal malformations.

An 8 year-old girl had a cushingoid appearance for six months. Hormone study showed extremely high serum levels of cortisol (> 60 micrograms/dl) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (930 pg/ml). Initial chest X-ray showed nothing unusual, but a technetium-99mm MIBI scan showed an accumulation lesion in the left upper chest cavity. Chest magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated that the mass was in the superior anterior mediastinum. She had complete removal of the tumor with partial thymectomy. The pathology revealed a thymic carcinoid tumor. Carcinoid tumors of the thymus are extremely rare in child

The development of fetal hydrops in conjunction with intrathoracic pathology has been described, but rarely in association with pulmonary sequestration. The current report presents three cases of antenatally identified nonimmune hydrops fetalis, seen in association with pulmonary sequestrations. In one case, a left-sided chest mass also was defined. One infant was born by emergency cesarean section because of fetal distress at 34 weeks' gestation; the other two were delivered vaginally at 30 and 36 weeks. Two of the newborns were severely hydropic and required aggressive cardiorespiratory resu

A 56-year-old man had fever, precordial pain, and a mediastinal mass. The mass disappeared two months later and the patient remained asymptomatic for 2 1/2 years. At that time a full-blown nephrotic syndrome developed, with minimal-change glomerulopathy. The chest x-ray film showed the reappearance of a giant mediastinal mass. On biopsy of the mass, malignant thymoma was diagnosed. Association between minimal-change disease and Hodgkin's disease is well known, while the association with malignant thymoma has not been previously reported. The relationship between malignant thymoma and minimal-c

This case report describes the delayed appearance of Morgagni's hernia in a 5 year old child with B-Thalassemia major to present as an anterior mediastinal mass. The progressive enlargement of the liver resulted in herniation of the left lobe of the liver through the already congenitally present Morgagni's hernia leading to its enlargement. The report also emphasizes the fact that a previously normal chest x-ray should not preclude the diagnosis of Morgagni's hernia. Morgagni's hernia should also be included in the differential diagnosis of anterior mediastinal masses in children.

We herein report a case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma (PHG), which is a rare pulmonary mass. A 69-year-old man with no symptoms presented to our hospital because of the appearance of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Computed tomography revealed a right middle-lobe mass with spicula and infiltration into the upper lobe. Since a bronchofiberscopic examination showed no malignant cells in the specimen, the patient underwent thoracoscopic surgery, which revealed PHG. Spiculation and interlobar infiltration, which comprise the characteristic features of primary lung cancer, are uncommon pres

A 37-year-old Italian man presented with acute fever, headache, confusion and right arm clumsiness. Computerised axial tomography of the head showed right cerebellar, left parietal and frontal lobe haemorrhagic infarcts. An X-ray film of the chest showed a circular mass adjacent of the heart. On aspiration of the mass lesion during bronchoscopy, we found hydatid hooklets. A left ventriculogram showed this cyst to be attached to the pericardium. Subsequently, we performed left thoracotomy and the hydatid cyst was excised (though incompletely). The patient was treated with mebendazole and made a

A healthy 23-year-old female developed generalized pruritus over a year that began on her feet and gradually progressed to involve more than 50% of her entire body surface area. Punch skin biopsies were inconclusive, whereas a two-view chest x-ray was suspicious for lymphadenopathy. A chest computed tomography scan with contrast identified an anterior mediastinal mass which was biopsied and diagnosed as a nodular sclerosis type of Hodgkin's lymphoma. Subsequently, appropriate therapy was initiated resulting in complete resolution of the patient's chronic itch. This case underscores the clinica

Pulmonary vein thromboses (PVT) is a complication of lung malignancy and can be complicated by arterial embolic phenomenon. Patient is a 69-year-old female with a history of coronary artery disease and recent pneumonia seen on chest x-ray who presented with progressive headache, left arm numbness and abdominal pain. She was found to have numerous bilateral strokes, bilateral renal infarction and splenic infarction. CT Chest showed a right upper lobe mass compressing the pulmonary veins with filling defects concerning for thrombus. Diagnosis of PVT is made with CT angiogram, echocardiogram and

A patient with severe cardiac dysfunction similar to dilated cardiomyopathy expired because of lung squamous cell carcinoma. He was admitted with respiratory failure and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy based on the chest X-ray, electrocardiography, echocardiography, and coronary angiography. Chest computed tomography showed a mass shadow in the right lower lobe, and the patient was diagnosed with lung squamous cell carcinoma by bronchoscopy. The patient expired, and the autopsy revealed that a myocardial metastasis disrupted the cardiac-conduction syst

Primary liposarcomas of the mediastinum are extremely rare. They have a dramatic clinical course. An unusual case of a giant primary liposarcoma of the mediastinum in a 49-year-old female is described. In spite of the tumor size the patient's only symptom was dry cough. Chest X-ray and CT showed a huge mass in the left pleural cavity. A radical procedure was performed with removal of a giant 25 x 31 cm soft fatty tumor. Pathology showed liposarcoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and follow-up examination after 12 months showed no recurrence of the disease.

A 76-year-old woman came to us because of staggering, fever, dysarthria, and appetite loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed multiple masses with surrounding edema. Chest X-ray and computed tomography demonstrated a mass-like lesion in the left lung and left pleural effusion. Lung cancer and multiple brain metastases were suspected. However, the brain lesions demonstrated a high intensity through diffusion-weighted MRI. The finding was an important key to differentiate brain abscesses from lung cancer metastases.

We report a 26-year-old patient with slowly developing perigraft seroma 15 years after a modified Blalock-Taussig shunt with an expanded polytetrafluorethylene graft. The mediastinal mass was first observed on a chest x-ray film 8 years after the shunt operation. The mass contained massive gelatinous or organic tissues with a severely calcified pseudocapsule, and it was adjacent to the calcified but functioning graft. No fluid collections were noted. The histological findings were compatible with a seroma. No recurrence was noted on last follow-up 1 year postoperatively.

A 2 year old boy presented with features of opsoclonus, myoclonus and ataxia. Routine investigations of blood, urine, x-ray chest, bone scan, EEG and MRI of brain, were normal. Urine for VMA was negative. A right suprarenal mass was detected at MRI of abdomen. The mass was resected completely and was found histologically to be of differentiating type of neuroblastoma. The child was treated initially with prednisolone for 6 weeks along with sodium valproate. He is still on sodium valproate for his neurological symptoms. His symptoms still persist though they have decreased in intensity.

In an agricultural town in Burgenland (Austria) we found an increased prevalence of pleural plaques. These calcifying thickenings of the pleura are related to minimal asbestos exposure such as is mesothelioma, but they cannot be regarded as a precancerosis. The increased occurrence of pleural plaques in this town of nearly 3500 inhabitants (in which during 1916 to 1945 asbestos was mined) we first found at the chest x-ray archives of a pulmologic hospital, then by mass radiography and blind comparison with control groups. A photofluoroscopy of 300 persons yielded 16 cases with definite pleural
