Extended effect after a single dose of type A botulinum toxin for asymmetric masseter muscle hypertrophy.

Facial asymmetry can either be physiological or pathological and is a common cosmetic concern. A 35-year-old Indian male presented with broad appearing lower face and prominent left jaw since adolescence. Parotid enlargement and other local disorders were ruled out. Ultrasonographic thickness of right masseter muscle was 13 mm while that of left was 14.9 mm, in unclenched state. Type-A botulinum toxin (T-ABT) was injected, evenly at five points, in both muscles within the "safe zone". Using a 29 gauge needle, 15 and 25 international units were delivered to right and left masseters, respectivel

Ultrasound evaluation of masseter muscle changes in stabilization splint treatment of myofascial type painful temporomandibular diseases.

OBJECTIVES: To detect whether stabilization splint (SS) treatment of painful myofascial type temporomandibular diseases (TMD) changes the masseter muscle morphology using ultrasound (US). STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-five patients with painful myofascial TMD receiving SS treatment were studied. Masseter thickness, length, internal echo-fibrillary structure and vascularization were evaluated using gray-scale and power Doppler US just before and 3 months after the SS application. Visual analog scale (VAS) and mouth opening measurements were used to measure the outcome of treatment. RESULTS: A signific

Nerve growth factor-evoked masseter muscle sensitization and perturbation of jaw motor function in healthy women.

AIM: To replicate and extend previous findings of nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced mechanical sensitization in healthy young men to women and test for associations between mechanical sensitization and oral motor function. Combined these data would indicate if injection of NGF into the masseter muscle is a valid model of muscle pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 14 healthy women. Each subject received an injection of NGF (5 microg in 0.2 mL) into 1 masseter muscle and buffered isotonic saline (control, 0.2 mL)

Masticatory function and properties of masseter muscle fibers in microphthalmic (mi/mi) mice during postnatal development.

It is well known that teeth do not erupt in microphthalmic (mi/mi) mice, a type of osteopetrotic mice, due to bone resorption failure. Therefore, we surmise that the masticatory function of these mice is different from that of normal mice. In this study, the differences to the properties of masseter muscle fibers were clarified morphologically and immunohistochemically in the mi/mi and normal mice. Morphological observations revealed that the muscle fibers in the mi/mi mice were smaller than those in normal mice at 9 weeks of age. However, no marked differences between mi/mi and normal mice at

Masseter Muscle in Somatosensory Tinnitus and Potential Therapeutic Role for Botulinum Toxin Type A: A Scoping Review.

Background: Increasing evidence supports the existence of a somatosensory subtype of tinnitus, in which craniocervical-craniomandibular structures can modulate tinnitus perception also through central auditory pathways. Despite growing mechanistic evidence, no targeted pharmacological intervention has been validated for this subtype. Objectives: This study aimed to synthesize the anatomical and neurophysiological rationale linking masseter hyperactivity to somatosensory tinnitus and to discuss BoNT/A as a hypothesis-generating therapeutic option requiring clinical validation. Methods: A PRISMA

Botulinum toxin type A inhibits hyperalgesia in the rat masseter muscle in a carrageenan model of myofascial pain.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) attenuates nociception, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Studies of experimental pain in humans have also shown conflicting results. Carrageenan is commonly used to produce short-term acute inflammation and hyperalgesia in animal models, and the effect of BoNT-A on carrageenan-induced pain in the masseter muscle has not been studied. This study evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of intramuscular injection of BoNT-A in an experimental model of inflammatory pain in the masseter muscl

A Prospective Clinical Trail to Evaluate the Role and Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin Type-A for Masseter Muscle Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Masseter muscle hypertrophy (MMH) is a condition characterized by the enlargement of the masseter muscles, leading to facial asymmetry, pain, and functional issues. Traditionally treated through surgical resection, Botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A) has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative that reduces muscle bulk and relieves symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BTX-A in reducing muscle size, and pain, and improving aesthetic outcomes in patients with MMH. METHODS: A prospective clinical trial was conducted with five patients diagnosed w

What Happened to Masticatory Muscles after Botulinum-Toxin-Type A Injection into Masseter: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is commonly used in neuromuscular disorders and cosmetic fields, but the detailed histological and subcellular changes in masticatory muscles, mainly in masseter, remain underexplored. METHODS: The literature review was conducted using the PubMed and Cochrane databases between January 2000 and September 2024. Studies of BoNT-A injection in masseters with available full- text and extractable data were included and were grouped depending on injected species. The sample size, dose of injection, follow-up duration, and detailed muscle changes were concl

Masseter Muscle Thickness in Relation to Facial Form in Angle's Normal Occlusion and Malocclusions: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Various clinical studies performed in adults have shown the relationship between craniofacial morphology and masticatory muscle function. However, the growth of the masticatory muscle has not received such attention, when compared with the volume of studies on the skeletal growth of face. With this background and considering the widespread use of ultrasonography (USG), the following study was undertaken to provide some insights into the relationship between muscle and bone and facial morphology. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study conducted over a period of three

Postnatal growth and spatial conformity of the cranium, brain, eyeballs and masseter muscles in the macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Spatial growth constraints in the head region can lead to coordinated patterns of morphological variation that pleiotropically modify genetically defined phenotypes as the tissues compete for space. Here we test for such architectural modifications during rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) postnatal ontogeny. We captured cranium and brain shape from 153 MRI datasets spanning 13 to 1090 postnatal days and tested for patterns of covariation with measurements of relative brain, eyeball, and masseter muscle size as well as callosal tract length. We find that the shape of the infant (<365 days) macaqu

Autogenous Fat Transplantation and Botulinum Toxin Injection Into the Masseter Muscle to Create an Ideal Oval Face.

BACKGROUND: East Asian faces vary in shape but only oval faces seem to be considered attractive. Many patients with wide faces seek removal of part of the mandibular angle and/or zygoma to achieve an ideal facial contour, but the procedure is high risk and the recovery period is relatively protracted. OBJECTIVES: We sought to achieve ideal facial contours through the use of autologous fat grafting (AFG) combined with masseter botulinum toxin (BTX) injection for patients with wide faces and masseter hypertrophy. METHODS: Fourteen patients with wide faces underwent AFG of the forehead, tempora

Modulatory effects of repeated psychophysical stress on masseter muscle nociception in the nucleus raphe magnus of rats.

Psychophysical stress can cause neural changes that increase nociception in the orofacial region, particularly the masseter muscle (MM). The nucleus raphe magnus (NRM), which is located in the brain stem, serves the crucial role of regulating nociception through descending modulatory pain control. However, it remains unclear if neural activities in the NRM are affected under psychophysical stress conditions. This study conducted experiments to assess (1) whether neural activity, indicated by Fos expression in an NRM that has experienced MM injury, is affected by the stress of repeated forced s

An electromyographic study on the sequential recruitment of bilateral sternocleidomastoid and masseter muscle activity during gum chewing.

Mandibular functions are associated with electromyographic activity of the jaw muscles and also the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). The precise spatiotemporal relation of SCM and masticatory muscles activities during chewing is worthy of investigation. To analyse the sequential recruitment of SCM and masseter activities during chewing as indicated by the spatiotemporal locations of their activity peaks. Jaw movements and bilateral surface electromyographic activity of SCM and masseter were recorded during gum chewing in 20 healthy subjects. The timing order was decided by comparing the lengt

Association between craniofacial morphology and fiber-type distributions in human masseter and medial pterygoid muscles.

Numerous experimental studies and clinical anecdotal evidence demonstrate a close interaction between masticatory muscle function and skeletal form. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between histochemical characteristics of human masseter and medial pterygoid muscles and cephalometric measurements of the 11 subjects from whom specimens were collected. Muscular specimens were obtained at the time of corrective surgery through incisions made to expose the mandibular ramus. Histochemical analysis was used to determine the size and distribution of fiber type

Effect of masseter hypofunction on mandibular growth and masticatory muscle coordination: an in vivo study of animal model.

It has been considered that dysfunction of masticatory muscles could affect growth and development of maxillofacial morphology. However, effects of reduced masticatory muscle functions on mandibular growth and changes in the coordination mechanism between individual muscles have not been fully investigated. This study aimed to investigate the association between masticatory function and mandibular growth and then clarify the roles of individual masticatory muscles and their compensation mechanisms. Sixteen general purpose mice received botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT⁄A) unilaterally into the
