Bilateral septic cavernous sinus thrombosis following the masticator and parapharyngeal space infection from the odontogenic origin: a case report.

Neglect of odontogenic infections can have serious consequences. If they spread through fascial planes and intracranially they can cause an abscess, orbital cellulitis, and eventually cavernous sinus thrombosis. The authors report a case of rapid progressive bilateral orbital cellulitis and cavernous sinus thrombosis that originated from dental caries. Septic cavernous sinus thrombosis is a medical emergency. Early recognition and prompt treatments direct to the underlying sources of infection are crucial. Broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment to reduce morbidity

Long-lasting adverse effects of short-term stress during the suckling-mastication transition period on masticatory function and intraoral sensation in rats.

Early-life stress affects brain development, eventually resulting in adverse behavioral and physical health consequences in adulthood. The present study assessed the hypothesis that short-term early-life stress during infancy before weaning, a period for the maturation of mastication and sleep, poses long-lasting adverse effects on masticatory function and intraoral sensations later in life.Rat pups were exposed to either maternal separation (MS) or intermittent hypoxia (IH-Infancy) for 6 h/day in the light/sleep phase from postnatal day (P)17 to P20 to generate "neglect" and "pediatric obstru

Kinematic Features of Mandibular Movement during Mastication in Geriatric Individuals Who Are Provided with a Dysphagia Diet at Long-Term Care Facilities.

Providing a normal diet to a care recipient who is unable to form an adequate bolus may cause suffocation or aspiration pneumonia. We investigated whether differences in kinematic data of mandibular movements during mastication can be used as an indicator of the need for a dysphagia diet in the elderly in long-term care facilities. We included 63 participants who were provided with solid food in two long-term care facilities. The primary outcome variable was the kinematic data on mandibular movement during cracker chewing. The analysis results were compared between the normal and dysphagia die

Mastication stimuli regulate the heartbeat rate through rhythmic regulation by the hypothalamic-autonomic system; molecular and telemetric studies in weaning-stage rats.

Mastication stimuli have been demonstrated to affect memory function and autonomic nerve activity; however, this process has not been well studied during weaning compared to old age. Previously, we conducted molecular analyses of the thalamus and hippocampus to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this memory-enhancing effect in weaning-stage rats. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of masticatory stimuli on the regulation of heartbeat rate (HR) through the hypothalamic-autonomic system. Three-week-old male rats were administered a powdered diet (P group) or chow-diet (C group) for

Relation entre la mastication et la qualité de l'alimentation des aînés de l'Étude longitudinale québécoise sur la nutrition et le vieillissement (NuAge).

The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the quality of mastication and dietary intake among community-dwelling older adults (67-84 years). A secondary analysis of data collected upon entry of participants in the NuAge study was effected. Perceived masticatory efficiency (n=1793) was measured using a questionnaire inspired by the Oral Health Impact Profile. Direct assessment of masticatory efficiency was carried out in a subsample (n=94), using a validated clinical test (Swallowing Threshold Test Index, 0-100%). Dietary intake was calculated from three non-consecutive

Polysaccharides from Citrus Fruit with Different Mastication Traits Ameliorate DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis by Restoring Intestinal Barrier Function and Microbiota Balance.

Mastication trait is an important indicator for evaluating citrus fruit texture and may modulate the biological activity of citrus polysaccharides. This study compared the protective effects of pulp polysaccharides from citrus fruit with different mastication traits, namely Hongmeiren (HMR, superior), Satsuma (WM, moderate), and Nanfeng tangerine (NF, inferior mastication trait) on ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice. All polysaccharides alleviated UC symptoms, with HMR showing the most pronounced effects by more markedly reducing TNF-α levels, while enhancing IL-10, ZO-1, Occludin, and MUC2 expre

Short communication: Detection of mastication speed during rumination in cattle using 3-axis, neck-mounted accelerometers and fast Fourier transfer algorithm.

There have been limited reports on mastication speed during cattle rumination. The objective of this study was to establish a method to detect mastication speed based on data obtained during rumination through the use of a 3-axis accelerometer attached to the neck. A 3-axis accelerometer was attached to 6 dry Holstein cattle. When rumination behavior was observed, the accelerometer and the high-speed camera simultaneously recorded acceleration at the neck and moving image of the head movement. Based on the number of mastication movements recorded on video, mastication speed A was calculated. D

Enhanced colon-targeted drug delivery through development of 5-fluorouracil-loaded cross-linked mastic gum nanoparticles.

This study explored the development of a novel colon-specific drug delivery system for 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) using cross-linked mastic gum (MG) nanoparticles (NPs). The primary goal is to enhance the treatment efficacy of colon cancer while minimizing systemic side effects. We employed Fourier Transform Infrared Radiation (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for the detailed characterization of the samples. FTIR analysis confirmed the successful cross-linking of MG, whereas SEM images revealed the spherical and uniform morphology of the NPs. Additionally, analysis of drug encapsulatio

Bactericidal activity of mastic resin against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus aureus and its therapeutic efficacy in experimental pyoderma/impetigo.

In recent years, inappropriate usage of antibiotics has led to a rapid increase in antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Mastic is a natural resin obtained from the stems and leaves of Pistacia lentiscus trees. We previously demonstrated its anti-inflammatory potential for alleviating atopic dermatitis symptoms, however, its direct effects on Staphylococci are unclear. This study was performed to verify the bactericidal effects of mastic at different concentrations against staphylococcal species in vitro and to evaluate the preventive and therapeutic potential of mastic in a mouse model of pyoderm

[Effects of mastication and submandibular gland ectomy on the growth ability of isoproterenol-stimulated parotid gland and other tissues in male mice].

In a previous article we reported that mastication played an important role in the development of submandibular glands in male mice. Submandibular glands contain epidermal growth factor (EGF) which stimulates the proliferation of various cells in developing animals. In this study, the effects of the hypotrophy of submandibular glands caused by reduction of mastication and the removal of the glands on the growth ability of isoproterenol (IPR)-stimulated parotid glands and other tissues were investigated. The animals in the experiment were male mice and they divided into three groups, a control

Combined endoscopic endonasal & transoral approach to transpatial lesion involving the infratemporal fossa and masticator space: A case study and literature review.

Transpatial skull base lesions involving the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are challenging due to the complex neurovascular structures of the region. Open approaches have traditionally been utilized to access these spaces. We present a 55-year-old woman presented with a mesenchymal mass involving the left ITF and masticator space. A combined endoscopic endonasal transpterygoid approach was performed followed by an endoscopic transoral-transmandibular corridor to access and resect the tumor. The post-operative course was unremarkable with no recurrence during her follow-up. Combined endoscopic appr
