To estimate the incidence of acute mastoiditis and identify predictors for mastoid surgery, a retrospective case record study of 38 children hospitalised for acute mastoiditis in Oslo from 1989 to 1998 was performed. Median age at diagnosis was 18 months and 13 (34%) of the children received mastoidectomy. Compared to the period 1970-1979, the incidence of mastoidectomy was significantly reduced. Only seven children (18%) had experienced acute otitis media prior to the current episode. Symptom duration of 6 days or more prior to hospitalisation and elevated white blood cell counts and C-reacti

Conclusion Cochlea can be directly excited by fluid (soft-tissue) stimulation. Objective To determine whether there is no difference in auditory-nerve-brainstem evoked response (ABR) thresholds to fluid stimulation between normal and animal models of post radical-mastoidectomy, as seen in a previous human study. Background It has been shown in humans that hearing can be elicited with stimulation to fluid in the external auditory meatus (EAM), and radical-mastoidectomy cavity. These groups differed in age, initial hearing, and drilling exposure. To overcome this difference, experiments were con

OBJECTIVE: To determine possible changes in the outer hair cell (OHC) function related to drill noise exposure.
METHODS: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were measured at frequencies of f(2) = 2, 3, 4 and 5 kHz, and a frequency ratio f(1)/f(2) = 1.22. The f(1) and f(2) levels were delivered at 65 dB SPL. DPOAE amplitudes were compared in 13 patients both before and after mastoidectomy, and between these patients and 5 patients who underwent tympanoplasty.
RESULTS: The DPOAE amplitudes were significantly decreased at 2 and 4 kHz (p = 0.01 and p = 0.013, respectively) immediate

Benign middle ear tumors represent a rare group of neoplasms that vary widely in their pathology, anatomy, and clinical findings. These factors have made it difficult to establish guidelines for the resection of such tumors. Here we present 7 unique cases of these rare and diverse tumors and draw from our experience to recommend optimal surgical management. Based on our experience, a postauricular incision is necessary in nearly all cases. Mastoidectomy is required for tumors that extend into the mastoid cavity. Whenever exposure or hemostasis is believed to be inadequate with simple mastoidec
