Infant physiological response to the still-face paradigm: contributions of maternal sensitivity and infants' early regulatory behavior.

The current study examined the independent and additive contributions of maternal sensitivity measured prior to and following a social stressor, and infant behaviors to infants' physiological response to the still-face paradigm (SFP) in a sample characterized by poverty-related environmental risk. Ninety-one mother/infant dyads participated in the SFP when their infants were 5 months old. Maternal sensitivity was coded during the play and reunion episodes. Infant behaviors were coded during the reunion episode of the SFP while measures of heart rate (HR) and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA)

A potential gastrointestinal link between enhanced postnatal maternal care and reduced anxiety-like behavior in adolescent rats.

Early life experience impacts emotional development in the infant. In rat pups, repeated, brief (i.e., 15 min) maternal separation (MS15) during the first 1-2 postnatal weeks has been shown to increase active maternal care and to reduce later anxiety-like behavior in the offspring. We hypothesized that the anxiolytic effect of MS15 is partly due to increased intestinal release of cholecystokinin (CCK) in rat pups as a result of increased maternal contact. We predicted that rats with a history of MS15 would display less anxiety in the elevated plus maze (EPMZ) and novelty-suppressed feeding (NS

Gestational ethanol and nicotine exposure: effects on maternal behavior, oxytocin, and offspring ethanol intake in the rat.

Alcohol consumption and smoking during pregnancy is common, despite the known adverse effects of these drugs on fetal development. Though studies on the effects of each drug separately are published, little is known about the effect of concurrent use of alcohol and nicotine in humans or in preclinical models. In this report, we examined the impact of continuous gestational exposure to both ethanol via liquid diet and nicotine via an osmotic minipump on maternal behavior, offspring ethanol intake, and oxytocin levels in a rat model. Dams were tested for the onset of maternal behavior with litte

A cross-fostering study in a genetic animal model of depression: maternal behavior and depression-like symptoms.

Connections between maternal behavior and childhood depression were examined by using a "genetic animal model"; Flinder Sensitive Line--(FSL) rats, and cross-fostering the offspring with the control strain, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. The control procedure was "in-fostering", where the foster dam and her pups were from the same strain. Contribution of pups' characteristics/genotype to maternal behavior was examined. After weaning, we measured male offspring's body weight, immobility in the swim test, and basal corticosterone (CORT) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) levels at the prepubertal age of

Maternal judgments of intentionality in young children with autism: the effects of diagnostic information and stereotyped behavior.

This study examined the relation among maternal judgment of intentionality and variables relevant to families of children with autism. Thirty-six mothers of children with autism rated segments of home videotape of behavior from very young children later diagnosed with autism. Mothers were randomly assigned to either a diagnostic or a no diagnostic information group. No significant difference was found on overall ratings of intentionality. Maternal stress was not correlated with overall ratings of intentionality for either group. Mothers in the diagnostic information group rated stereotyped beh

Estrogen, progesterone, and pregnancy termination alter neural activity in brain regions that control maternal behavior in rats.

Estrogen stimulates maternal behavior in rats, but does so most potently when its administration is temporally coupled with the termination of pregnancy. In contrast, this effect of estrogen is blocked when subjects are administered a large dose of progesterone concurrent with estrogen. The current study was performed to examine the neural circuitry influenced by these treatments and pup presentation during the hormonally-mediated onset and inhibition of maternal behavior. In experiment I, estrogen induced c-Fos immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) in virgin rats, but w

Effects of maternal stress on puberty, fertility and aggressive behavior of female mice from different intrauterine positions.

We examined the effects of maternal stress (bright light and heat) during the last third of pregnancy on subsequent reproductive and behavioral characteristics of female mice from different intrauterine positions. Female mice that develop in utero between two male fetuses (2M females) differ from females that develop between two female fetuses (0M females) in their serum concentrations of both testosterone and estradiol during the fetal period of sexual differentiation. After birth, 0M and 2M females differ in a wide range of reproductive characteristics. We examined the effects of maternal st

Maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and mother-child interactions in families of children with externalizing disorders.

Relationships among maternal characteristics, ratings of child behavior, and observed mother-child interactions were examined in a sample of 40 4- to 12-year-old children with externalizing disorders. Mothers and children were observed in a task interaction and mothers provided self-reports of depressed mood, parenting self-esteem, marital satisfaction, social support, and life stress. Child behavior was rated by both mothers and teachers. Several significant correlations were found among observed mother and child behaviors and among maternal self-report measures. However, few significant rela

Developmental cascades from maternal preconception stress to child behavior problems: Testing multilevel preconception, prenatal, and postnatal influences.

Although maternal stress during pregnancy and even before conception shapes offspring risk for mental health problems, relatively little is known about the mechanisms through which these associations operate. In theory, preconception and prenatal stress may affect offspring mental health by influencing child responses to postnatal caregiving. To address this knowledge gap, this study had two aims. First, we examined associations between preconception and prenatal stress with child temperament profiles at age four using multilevel assessment of maternal perceived stress and stress physiology. Transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses identify candidate pathways linking maternal cadmium exposure to altered neurodevelopment and behavior.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous toxic heavy metal of major public concern. Despite inefficient placental transfer, maternal Cd exposure impairs fetal growth and development. Increasing evidence from animal models and humans suggests maternal Cd exposure negatively impacts neurodevelopment; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. To address this, we utilized multiple -omics approaches in a mouse model of maternal Cd exposure to identify pathways altered in the developing brain. Offspring maternally exposed to Cd presented with enlarged brains proportional to body weights at birth

Effects of maternal exposure to arsenic on social behavior and related gene expression in F2 male mice.

BACKGROUND: Arsenic is a developmental neurotoxicant. It means that its neurotoxic effect could occur in offspring by maternal arsenic exposure. Our previous study showed that developmental arsenic exposure impaired social behavior and serotonergic system in C3H adult male mice. These effects might affect the next generation with no direct exposure to arsenic. This study aimed to detect the social behavior and related gene expression changes in F2 male mice born to gestationally arsenite-exposed F1 mice. METHODS: Pregnant C3H/HeN mice (F0) were given free access to tap water (control mice) or

Central neuroimmune activity and depressive-like behavior in response to repeated maternal separation and injection of LPS.

Disruption of attachment relations in early life is linked to greater vulnerability to depressive illness at later ages. Evidence suggests this process involves stress-induced activation of central inflammatory factors, though the specific mediators and processes involved are not known. We used a guinea pig model in which effects of maternal separation appear more clearly due to absence of the attachment figure than is the case for other laboratory rodents. Separation in a novel environment on two consecutive days evoked a depressive-like behavioral response that sensitized during a final test

Reproductive and Behavior Dysfunction Induced by Maternal Androgen Exposure and Obesity Is Likely Not Gut Microbiome-Mediated.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder of unclear etiology in women and is characterized by androgen excess, insulin resistance, and mood disorders. The gut microbiome is known to influence conditions closely related with PCOS, and several recent studies have observed changes in the stool microbiome of women with PCOS. The mechanism by which the gut microbiome interacts with PCOS is still unknown. We used a mouse model to investigate if diet-induced maternal obesity and maternal DHT exposure, mimicking the lean and obese PCOS women, cause lasting changes

Maternal Stress Combined with Terbutaline Leads to Comorbid Autistic-Like Behavior and Epilepsy in a Rat Model.

Human autism is comorbid with epilepsy, yet, little is known about the causes or risk factors leading to this combined neurological syndrome. Although genetic predisposition can play a substantial role, our objective was to investigate whether maternal environmental factors alone could be sufficient. We examined the independent and combined effects of maternal stress and terbutaline (used to arrest preterm labor), autism risk factors in humans, on measures of both autistic-like behavior and epilepsy in Sprague-Dawley rats. Pregnant dams were exposed to mild stress (foot shocks at 1 week interv

Effects of maternal separation on behavior and brain damage in adult rats exposed to neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Animal studies suggest that maternal separation, a widely used paradigm to study the effects of early life adversity, exerts a profound and life-long impact on both brain and behavior. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether adverse early life experiences interact with neonatal hypoxia-ischemia, affecting the outcome of this neurological insult at both functional and structural levels during adulthood. Rat pups were separated from their mothers during postnatal days 1-6, for either a short (15 min) or prolonged (180 min) period, while another group was left undisturbed. On post

A latent modeling approach to genotype-phenotype relationships: maternal problem behavior clusters, prenatal smoking, and MAOA genotype.

This study illustrates the application of a latent modeling approach to genotype-phenotype relationships and gene × environment interactions, using a novel, multidimensional model of adult female problem behavior, including maternal prenatal smoking. The gene of interest is the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene which has been well studied in relation to antisocial behavior. Participants were adult women (N = 192) who were sampled from a prospective pregnancy cohort of non-Hispanic, white individuals recruited from a neighborhood health clinic. Structural equation modeling was used to model a fem

Maternal experience affects the behavioral response and the daily weight gain to weaning stress in lambs.

Sheep maternal experience is of great importance for the development and welfare of their offspring. This study aimed to compare the behavioral and physiological responses to weaning stress between lambs born and reared by multiparous (with maternal experience) and primiparous (without maternal experience) dams. Twenty-three singleton lambs born to Finnish-Landrace x Polwarth dams were used: twelve lambs were born and reared by multiparous dams (LMD) and eleven lambs by primiparous dams (LPD). Before and after weaning body weight, serum proteins and the behaviors were evaluated. While the LPD

How do maternal socioeconomic and behavioral patterns affect oral health in early childhood?

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal observational cohort study. COHORT SELECTION: The data analyzed were derived from a comprehensive observational study on BRISA prenatal cohort conducted in São Luís City, Brazil, between 2010 and 2013. A convenience sample included pregnant women recruited from both public and private prenatal health services in the city. To participate in the study, women needed to have undergone an obstetric ultrasound before the 20th week of pregnancy to estimate gestational age. Multiple pregnancies were excluded. Initially, the pregnant women were interviewed and

Cannabidiol improves maternal obesity-induced behavioral, neuroinflammatory and neurochemical dysfunctions in the juvenile offspring.

Maternal obesity is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder in the offspring. While numerous studies focus on preventive measures targeting the mothers, only a limited number provide practical approaches for addressing the damages once they are already established. We have recently demonstrated the interplay between maternal obesity and treatment with cannabidiol (CBD) on hypothalamic inflammation and metabolic disturbances, however, little is known about this relationship on behavioral manifestations an
