Evaporative dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction: Preferred practice pattern guidelines for diagnosis and treatment.

Evaporative dry eye (EDE) due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is one of the common clinical problems encountered in ophthalmology. It is a major cause of dry eye disease (DED) and of ocular morbidity. In EDE, inadequate quantity or quality of lipids produced by the meibomian glands leads to faster evaporation of the preocular tear film and symptoms and signs of DED. Although the diagnosis is made using a combination of clinical features and special diagnostic test results, the management of the disease might be challenging as it is often difficult to distinguish EDE from other subtypes of

Hypochlorous Acid Can Be the Novel Option for the Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Dry Eye through Ultrasonic Atomization.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye is a multifactor disease which needs comprehensive treatments to keep the homeostasis of ocular surface. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of hypochlorous acid on the meibomian gland dysfunction dry eye through ultrasonic atomization. METHODS: We set this study of 0.01% HOCL and 0.1% hyaluronate by ultrasonic atomization. All the data was recorded at the 1st, 15th, 30th, and 55th days. The patients' complains, the meibum analysis, conjunctive congestion, corneal staining, Schirmer's I test, and NIBUT were recorded by K5M, the MMP-9, and IL-2 of tear by inflammation kit; th

Prospective evaluation of intense pulsed light treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis due to ocular rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Ocular rosacea is a common skin condition leading to dry eye that is difficult to manage. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the efficacy and safety of a new intense pulsed light device, Thermaeye Plus, for meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis due to ocular rosacea. MATERIALS & METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal study included 74 eyes of 37 consecutive patients with ocular rosacea, with mean age of 45.6±11.7 years. Four consecutive sessions were undertaken, including14 flashes with 10 J/cm² on the periocular area and facial cheeks on Day 1, 14, 28, and 49. Clinical evaluation wa

Meibomian gland dysfunction is highly prevalent among first-time visitors at a Norwegian dry eye specialist clinic.

To investigate the prevalence of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in patients presenting with subjective dry eye-related symptoms at their first-time consultation in a Norwegian specialized ocular surface clinic. Additionally, to explore the accuracy of the ocular surface disease index score (OSDI) as an extensively applied tool to assess the severity of dry eye symptoms and MGD diagnosis. Patients with subjective dry eye-related complaints (n = 900) attending the clinic for the first time, from 2012 to 2016, were included in the study. At the baseline, patients completed the OSDI questionnai

Safety and Efficacy of BroadBand Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for Dry Eye Disease with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: BroadBand light intense pulsed light (BBL-IPL) therapy has shown to reduce hordeolum and blepharitis frequency. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BBL-IPL therapy in patients with dry eye disease (DED) from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). METHODS: This is a retrospective, consecutive case series of 48 patients with DED from MGD who underwent BBL-IPL therapy from October 2016 to January 2019 at a single, outpatient clinic in Ontario, Canada. Clinical outcomes included first and average non-invasive keratograph tear break-up times (NIKBUT), bulbar redness (BR)

Therapeutic efficacy and safety of a multi-wavelength LED irradiation device in a rat model of meibomian gland dysfunction.

This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and ocular safety of a multi-wavelength (680 nm, 780 nm, 830 nm) LED irradiation device in a rat model of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)-induced dry eye disease (DED). A total of 34 male SD rats were randomly assigned to eight experimental groups, including a normal control group, an MGD induction group, and various treatment groups (LED irradiation, hyaluronic acid, cyclosporine, thermal therapy, and combination therapy). MGD was induced by CFA injection. LED irradiation was administered daily from day 8 to day 22. The clinical ocular a

A retrospective study of the efficacy of intense pulsed light delivered by the Lacrystim® for meibomian gland dysfunction therapy.

BACKGROUND: Meibomian gland dysfunction is the most common etiology of dry eye disease worldwide and intense pulsed light appears to be a promising treatment with encouraging results. Lacrystim® is a new IPL device (CE marking in 2019) and no studies have yet been published on it. We propose the first study on this device with an objective assessment of its efficacy and an extended follow-up over 6 months. METHODS: Patients presenting with a dry eye disease (DED) with stable mild to moderate MGD and having received Lacrystim® treatment between june 2019 and june 2020 were included. 3 IPL sess

PURPOSE: To observe the effect of demodex infection on the ocular surface changes of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and analyze the correlation between the number of demodex and the changes of the ocular surface. METHODS: Hundred patients with MGD aged 18-70 years who visited the dry eye center of Shanghai Aier Eye Hospital were recruited. All patients were examined with in vivo confocal microscopy to quantify the demodex and divided them into two groups (demodex negative group and demodex positive group) according to the number of demodex mites. [Meibomian glands : part III. Dysfunction - argument for a discrete disease entity and as an important cause of dry eye].

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), mainly synonymous with posterior blepharitis but typically without prominent inflammatory alterations of the lid margin, is a discrete disease entity and a frequent cause of wetting deficiencies of the ocular surface leading to dry eye disease that deserves increased recognition by clinicians. The history, classification, pathology, influencing factors, diagnostics and therapy are explained and discussed. MGD is mainly based on an obstructive mechanism caused by hyperkeratinization of the excretory duct and/or increased viscosity of the secretion (meibum) wit

Low-level light therapy for dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

A healthy tear film is vital for ocular surface integrity and relies on the coordinated function of the lacrimal glands, meibomian glands and conjunctival goblet cells. Dysfunction in any of these elements can lead to dry eye disease (DED). This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of low-level light therapy (LLLT) as a standalone DED treatment. Although evidence for LLLT's therapeutic potential is growing, prior reviews have focused on short-term outcomes or combined LLLT with intense pulsed light. This meta-analysis consolidates current findings to clarify the clinical

Artificial Intelligence for Diagnosing Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Diagnostic Test Accuracy Studies.

PURPOSE: To identify, appraise, and synthesize the performance of artificial intelligence-based meibography reading as compared with human graders in diagnosing meibomian gland dysfunction. METHODS: We followed Cochrane methodology and reporting guidelines for diagnostic test accuracy reviews. To assess potential risk of bias and applicability, we used a modified Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 checklist. We applied bivariate logistic models to estimate summary sensitivity and specificity when appropriate and used the GRADE framework to rate the certainty of the evidence.
