Cross-LSTM: Integrating Cross Attention With Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks in Estimating Joint Moments From Wearable Sensors.

Precise estimation of joint moments is essential for designing rehabilitation interventions and optimising the control of assistive devices. Current methods, including physics-based modelling and data-driven approaches, heavily depend on motion capture equipment such as bulky cameras and force plates, which limits their real-time use in real-world environments. To address these limitations, we propose the Cross-LSTM, a dual-stream neural network architecture integrating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with Residual Connected Cross-Attention (RCCA) mechanisms to estimate joint moments us

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of the Right Superior Parietal Lobule Modulates the Retro-Cue Benefit in Visual Short-Term Memory.

Several studies have shown enhanced performance in change detection tasks when spatial cues indicating the probe's location are presented after the memory array has disappeared (i.e., retro-cues) compared with spatial cues that are presented simultaneously with the test array (i.e., post-cues). This retro-cue benefit led some authors to propose the existence of two different stores of visual short-term memory: a weak but high-capacity store (fragile memory (FM)) linked to the effect of retro-cues and a robust but low-capacity store (working memory (WM)) linked to the effect of post-cues. The f

Optogenetic stimulation of CA3 pyramidal neurons restores synaptic deficits to improve spatial short-term memory in APP/PS1 mice.

The hippocampal CA3 region, that is involved in the encoding and retrieval of spatial memory, is found to be synaptically impaired in the early-onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is reported optogenetic manipulation of DG or CA1 can rescue the memory impairment of APP/PS1 mice, however, how CA3 region contributes to AD-related deficits in cognitive function is still unknown. Our work shows optogenetic stimulation of CA3 pyramidal neurons (PNs) significantly restores the impaired spatial short-term memory of APP/PS1 mice. This enhances the anatomical synaptic density/strength and synaptic pl

Pentoxifylline Alleviates Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemia-Induced Short-term Memory Impairment by Suppressing Apoptosis in the Hippocampus of Rat Pups.

PURPOSE: Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage is a major cause of acute mortality and chronic neurologic morbidity in infants and children. We investigated the effects of pentoxifylline, a methylxanthine derivative and type-4 phosphodiesterase inhibitor, on short-term memory and apoptotic neuronal cell death in the hippocampus following perinatal hypoxic-ischemia in newborn rats. METHODS: We used a step-down avoidance task to evaluate short-term memory and 3ʹ-5ʹ-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) assay to detect cAMP levels. We evaluated apoptosis using a terminal deoxynucleotidyl trans

Activated microglia mediate synapse loss and short-term memory deficits in a mouse model of transthyretin-related oculoleptomeningeal amyloidosis.

Oculoleptomeningeal amyloidosis (OA) is a fatal and untreatable hereditary disease characterized by the accumulation of transthyretin (TTR) amyloid within the central nervous system. The mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of OA, and in particular how amyloid triggers neuronal damage, are still unknown. Here, we show that amyloid fibrils formed by a mutant form of TTR, A25T, activate microglia, leading to the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitric oxide. Further, we found that A25T amyloid fibrils induce the activation of Akt, culminating in the transl

Gray Wolf Optimization-Long Short-Term Memory Based Temperature Estimation and Closed-Loop Control Method in Microfluidic Chemiluminescence Immunoassay.

Driven by the rising demand for point-of-care testing (POCT) in aging societies, accurate temperature regulation of reaction solutions has become a core technical bottleneck for miniaturized chemiluminescence immunoassay systems, since conventional indirect control strategies inevitably produce systematic deviations. To tackle this challenge, we present an integrated solution that couples multiphysics simulation, data-driven temperature estimation modeling, and embedded hardware design. We constructed a COMSOL heat transfer model to analyze the thermal performance of the microfluidic chip. Mea

Wind forecasting-driven profit optimization in deregulated energy markets using long short-term memory and American zebra optimization algorithm.

The growing use of renewable energy sources (RES), particularly wind power (WP), in deregulated electricity markets has resulted in large operating uncertainties because of the erratic and uncertain behavior of wind resources. Differences between actual wind velocity (AWV) and forecasted wind velocity (FWV) cause a large price imbalance (PIMB) that has implications for market execution scheduling, operational reliability, and economic profitability. To solve these problems, this paper presents a comprehensive techno-economic model comprising Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based wind forecasting

Diversity of clustered protocadherin-α genes in neuronal identity and its role in short-term specific associative memory formation.

Clustered protocadherins (cPcdh) are cell adhesion molecules with 58 isoforms, essential for neural circuit formation and higher cognitive functions. This study investigated the impact of reduced cPcdh-α diversity on cognitive function using mutant mice. Behavioral tests revealed that cPcdh-α1-12 mice exhibited specific memory impairments ranging from a few seconds to 2 h short-term memory, while memory from 24 h to 2 weeks long-term memory remained intact. Notably, no abnormalities in appearance or spontaneous behavior were observed in cPcdh-α1-12 mice, suggesting that the deficits were speci

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Over Bilateral Temporal Lobes Modulates Hippocampal-Occipital Functional Connectivity and Visual Short-Term Memory Precision.

Although the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is traditionally considered a region dedicated to long-term memory, recent neuroimaging and intracranial recording evidence suggests that the MTL also contributes to certain aspects of visual short-term memory (VSTM), such as the quality or precision of retained VSTM content. This study aims to further investigate the MTL's role in VSTM precision through the application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants underwent 1.5 mA offline tDCS over bilateral temporal lobes using left cat

The primate cortical LFP exhibits multiple spectral and temporal gradients and widespread task dependence during visual short-term memory.

Although cognitive functions are hypothesized to be mediated by synchronous neuronal interactions in multiple frequency bands among widely distributed cortical areas, we still lack a basic understanding of the distribution and task dependence of oscillatory activity across the cortical map. Here, we ask how the spectral and temporal properties of the local field potential (LFP) vary across the primate cerebral cortex, and how they are modulated during visual short-term memory. We measured the LFP from 55 cortical areas in two macaque monkeys while they performed a visual delayed match to sampl

A Molecular Generative Model of COVID-19 Main Protease Inhibitors Using Long Short-Term Memory-Based Recurrent Neural Network.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a serious threat to public health and prompted researchers to find anti-coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) compounds. In this study, the long short-term memory-based recurrent neural network was used to generate new inhibitors for the coronavirus. First, the model was trained to generate drug compounds in the form of valid simplified molecular-input line-entry system strings. Then, the structures of COVID-19 main protease inhibitors were applied to fine-tune the model. After fine-tuning, the network could generate new molecul

Abdominal Aortic Thrombus Segmentation in Postoperative Computed Tomography Angiography Images Using Bi-Directional Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory Architecture.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a fatal clinical condition with high mortality. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) imaging is the preferred minimally invasive modality for the long-term postoperative observation of AAA. Accurate segmentation of the thrombus region of interest (ROI) in a postoperative CTA image volume is essential for quantitative assessment and rapid clinical decision making by clinicians. Few investigators have proposed the adoption of convolutional neural networks (CNN). Although these methods demonstrated the potential of CNN architectures by automating the thrombus R

Relationship between short-term memory impairment and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex injury in patients with mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: The prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been reported to be related to memory function. Especially, the dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) is a substantial neural structure in short-term memory. In this study, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), we investigated the relationship between short-term memory impairment and the DLPFC injury in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: We recruited 46 consecutive chronic patients with mild TBI and 42 normal control subjects. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and fiber number (FN) of the prefronto-thalamic tracts were determined for both he

Non-perceptual Regions in the Left Inferior Parietal Lobe Support Phonological Short-term Memory: Evidence for a Buffer Account?

Buffer versus embedded processes accounts of short-term memory (STM) for phonological information were addressed by testing subjects' perception and memory for speech and non-speech auditory stimuli. Univariate and multivariate (MVPA) approaches were used to assess whether brain regions recruited in recognizing speech were involved in maintaining speech representations over a delay. As expected, a left superior temporal region was found to support speech perception. However, contrary to the embedded processes approach, this region failed to show a load effect, or any sustained activation, duri

Domain-Generality of Timing-Based Serial Order Processes in Short-Term Memory: New Insights from Musical and Verbal Domains.

Several models in the verbal domain of short-term memory (STM) consider a dissociation between item and order processing. This view is supported by data demonstrating that different types of time-based interference have a greater effect on memory for the order of to-be-remembered items than on memory for the items themselves. The present study investigated the domain-generality of the item versus serial order dissociation by comparing the differential effects of time-based interfering tasks, such as rhythmic interference and articulatory suppression, on item and order processing in verbal and

Transcranial direct current stimulation over right posterior parietal cortex changes prestimulus alpha oscillation in visual short-term memory task.

Alpha band activity changes accompanied with the level attentional state, and recent studies suggest that such oscillation is associated with activities in the posterior parietal cortex. Here we show that artificially elevating parietal activity via positively-charged electric current through the skull can rapidly and effortlessly change people's prestimulus alpha power and improve subsequent performance on a visual short-term memory (VSTM) task. This modulation of alpha power and behavioral performance, however, is dependent on people's natural VSTM capability such that only the low performer

Mouse model for deficiency of methionine synthase reductase exhibits short-term memory impairment and disturbances in brain choline metabolism.

Hyperhomocysteinaemia can contribute to cognitive impairment and brain atrophy. MTRR (methionine synthase reductase) activates methionine synthase, which catalyses homocysteine remethylation to methionine. Severe MTRR deficiency results in homocystinuria with cognitive and motor impairments. An MTRR polymorphism may influence homocysteine levels and reproductive outcomes. The goal of the present study was to determine whether mild hyperhomocysteinaemia affects neurological function in a mouse model with Mtrr deficiency. Mtrr+/+, Mtrr+/gt and Mtrrgt/gt mice (3 months old) were assessed for shor
