Brain imaging studies of appetite in the context of obesity and the menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND Obesity affects many aspects of health, including reproduction. Despite unrelenting warnings about the health consequences of obesity, its prevalence continues to rise. Beginning with the discovery of leptin in 1994, the endocrinology of energy homeostasis has been significantly advanced. More recently, brain imaging studies have been providing novel insights into homeostatic and hedonic aspects of human ingestive behavior. METHODS A comprehensive MEDLINE search was conducted on the topic of neuroendocrine control of ingestive behavior with an emphasis on functional magnetic resonan

The influence of stress on the menstrual cycle among newly incarcerated women.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to estimate the association of stressful life events on menstrual function in incarcerated women. METHODS: Project CONNECT is a study of reproductive health needs of incarcerated women conducted between June 2002 and December 2003. This analysis examines menstrual function in 446 women from this cohort who were under the age of 45. Regularity was defined as menses between 26 and 35 days long. Amenorrhea was defined as > or =90 days since last menstruation. Measures included stressful experiences and deprivation (e.g., physical or sexual abuse, stressful living conditions,

Phasic menstrual cycle effects on the control of breathing in healthy women.

This study examined the effects of menstrual cycle phase on ventilatory control. Fourteen eumenorrheic women were studied in the early follicular (FP; 1-6 days) and mid-luteal (LP; 20-24 days) phase of the menstrual cycle. Blood for the determination of arterial PCO(2) (PaCO(2)) , plasma strong ion difference ([SID]), progesterone ([P(4)]), and 17beta-estradiol ([E(2)]) concentrations were obtained at rest. Subjects performed a CO(2) rebreathing procedure that included prior hyperventilation and maintenance of iso-oxia to evaluate central and peripheral chemoreflex, and nonchemoreflex drives t

Performance of cytology and human papillomavirus testing in relation to the menstrual cycle.

Cervical smears prepared around the time of menses have been linked to unsatisfactory specimens and false negative results; however, it is unclear whether liquid-based cytology is similarly affected and data relating date of last menstrual period (LMP) to human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing are conflicting. Accordingly, we evaluated liquid-based cytology and HPV test results using Hybrid Capture 2 and PCR by LMP (days 0-10; 11-21; 22-28). We studied 5060 participants in ALTS, the Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASCUS) Low Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL) Tr

Association of physical and emotional symptoms with the menstrual cycle and life-style.

The frequency and severity of physical and emotional menstrual symptoms were investigated with a cross-sectional study of 502 women not seeking treatment for menstrual symptoms. The most frequent symptoms were abdominal bloating, backache, headache, constipation, low abdominal pain, fatigue and symptoms related to depression. Some symptoms increased during the late luteal phase, and others were related to the women's life-style. Lack of schooling and living in rural areas were associated with headache, backache, sadness, insecurity, restlessness and weakness. Women from urban areas with more s

Serial changes of serum CA125 levels during menstrual cycles.

Serial changes of serum CA125 levels during 32 menstrual cycles were examined in 32 healthy young women (19-21 years of age) charting basal body temperature (BBT) and measuring serum estradiol and progesterone levels. Analysis of BBT charts and serum progesterone levels revealed that the 32 menstrual cycles could be classified into either an ovulatory cycle with a sustained BBT temperature increase for at least 10 days (type I: 9 cycles), an ovulatory cycle with a sustained BBT temperature increase for less than 10 days (type II: 17 cycles), or anovulation (type III: 6 cycles). All 32 cycles e

[Borderline schizophrenia and cyclothymic disorder associated with disorders of the menstrual cycle].

Clinico-pathological investigation of borderline schizophrenia (42 women) and cyclothymia (22 women) with concomitant disorders in menstrual function was performed in a regional out-patient gynecological department. Major types of the course of mild psychopathology were identified which involve the endocrine gynecological dysfunction. Functional disorders of the menstrual cycle are seen as a class of numerous somatic signs masking the psychopathology in its proper sense in mental diseases and emerging at the edge of "soft" endogenous mental disorder. The authors postulate that the central nerv

The endocrinological profile of normal menstrual cycles in a population of Chinese women.

Endocrinological profiles of normal menstrual cycles were studied in 41 Chinese women. Daily serum concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) were determined by RIA. Thirty-four cycles were of normal length (26-35 days) and 6 cycles were prolonged up to 40 days with a follicular phase of 22-26 days. One cycle was anovulatory. Cyclical changes of LH, FSH, E2 and P were typical of ovulatory cycles in other populations as reported in the literature. In the normal cycle group the geometric mean of the LH midcy

[Comparative sonographic and endocrine studies of gonadotropin-stimulated menstrual cycles].

In 18 cycles of 16 patients the morphological changes following stimulation by human gonadotrophin were followed by ultra-sonography and radio-immunoassays of 17 beta-estradiol and progesterone (HMG). In 9 of 18 cycles hyperstimulation with more than 3 follicles on the day of chorionic gonadotrophin administration were found. When the human menopausal gonadotrophin treatment (HCG) results in the maturation of more than 10 follicles per ovary the estradiol level reaches more than 2000 pg/ml. In 4 of 8 cycles the administration of HCG triggered the hyperstimulation syndrome. In 5 of 18 cycles pr

Plasma sex steroid and gonadotrophin patterns in human menstrual cycles.

Sensitive and specific displacement analysis methods for the assay of steroid hormones in small volumes of plasma are described. Plasma sex steroid and gonadotrophin hormone patterns were determined throughout a number of normal menstrual cycles. The mean cycles showed patterns which were similar to those described by other workers. However, examination of individual cycles provided information which may contribute to our understanding of menstrual cycle regulation with particular reference to the pattern of 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone and steroid-gonadotrophin interactions.

An Overview of the Impact of the Menstrual Cycle on Nutrient Metabolism: An Integrative Perspective.

The menstrual cycle represents a dynamic infradian rhythm characterized by coordinated fluctuations in ovarian steroids that extend beyond reproductive function and influence systemic metabolism. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on how menstrual cycle phase modulates energy balance, macronutrient metabolism, micronutrient handling, and responses to dietary bioactive compounds. Across phases, small-to-moderate but consistent differences emerge in energy intake, resting energy expenditure, substrate utilization, and protein turnover, with a tendency toward increased energy inta

Fluctuations and interrelationship of oxidative stress and hepcidin during the menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation is a daily opportunity for iron loss in women. Hepcidin (Hepc), a key regulator of iron metabolism, is known to respond to both iron status and inflammation. Menstruation is also accompanied by local and systemic production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory responses. However, fluctuations in Hepc and oxidative stress during the menstrual cycle and their relationship are unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify of the fluctuations Hepc and oxidative stress and relationships. METHODS: Sixteen women were recruited, of whom twelve with normal menstrual

Improving Replication in Endometrial Omics: Understanding the Influence of the Menstrual Cycle.

The dynamic nature of human endometrial tissue presents unique challenges in analysis. Despite extensive research into endometrial disorders such as endometriosis and infertility, recent systematic reviews have highlighted concerning issues with the reproducibility of omics studies attempting to identify biomarkers. This review examines factors contributing to poor reproducibility in endometrial omics research. Hormonal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle lead to widespread molecular changes in the endometrium, most notably in gene expression profiles. In this review, we examine the variabilit

Postural sway is not affected by estrogen fluctuations during the menstrual cycle.

When people stand still, they exhibit a phenomenon called postural sway, or spontaneous movement of the body's center of pressure, which is related to balance control. In general females show less sway than males, but this difference only begins to appear around puberty, pointing to different levels of sex hormones as one potential mechanism for sway sex differences. In this study, we followed cohorts of young females using oral contraceptives (n = 32) and not using oral contraceptives (n = 19), to investigate associations between estrogen availability and postural sway. All participants visit

Capacity to Compensate for Central Hypovolemia and Effects of Menstrual Cycle Phases.

BACKGROUND: Tolerance to central hypovolemia is dictated by exhaustion of the physiological capacity to compensate called the compensatory reserve. Such physiological compromise can have detrimental impact on performance in aerospace environments as well as survival from hemorrhage on the battlefield. We induced central hypovolemia using progressively stepwise lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in women during various phases of the menstrual cycle to test the hypothesis that similar tolerance across all menstrual cycle phases would be reflected by similar changes in compensatory reserve.METHO

Evaluation of an Algorithm to Predict Menstrual-Cycle Phase at the Time of Injury.

CONTEXT: Women are 2 to 8 times more likely to sustain an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury than men, and previous studies indicated an increased risk for injury during the preovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle (MC). However, investigations of risk rely on retrospective classification of MC phase, and no tools for this have been validated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accuracy of an algorithm for retrospectively classifying MC phase at the time of a mock injury based on MC history and salivary progesterone (P4) concentration. DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. SETTING: Research l

Early visual processing is enhanced in the midluteal phase of the menstrual cycle.

Event-related potential (ERP) studies have revealed an early attentional bias in processing unpleasant emotional images in women. Recent neuroimaging data suggests there are significant differences in cortical emotional processing according to menstrual phase. This study examined the impact of menstrual phase on visual emotional processing in women compared to men. ERPs were recorded from 28 early follicular women, 29 midluteal women, and 27 men while they completed a passive viewing task of neutral and low- and high- arousing pleasant and unpleasant images. There was a significant effect of m
