Natural language processing (NLP) is central to the communication with machines and among ourselves, and NLP research field has long sought to produce human-quality language. Identification of informative criteria for measuring NLP-produced language quality will support development of ever-better NLP tools. The authors hypothesize that mentalizing network neural activity may be used to distinguish NLP-produced language from human-produced language, even for cases where human judges cannot subjectively distinguish the language source. BACKGROUND: This review provides an overview of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, including the four partially distinct subtypes of the disorder, current diagnostic criteria, and common comorbidities. Critically, it focuses on the etiology of OCD, including its underlying neuropathology, and examines cognitive dysfunction in OCD.
METHODS: This review study was conducted by library method.
RESULTS: We show how dysfunction in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits may underpin symptoms; and shed light on the putative neurochemistry within these loops such as the role of s

The relationship between the p factor and cognition in youth has largely focused on general cognition (IQ) and executive functions (EF). Another cognitive construct, processing speed (PS), is dissociable from IQ and EF, but has received less research attention despite being related to many different mental health symptoms. The present sample included 795 youth, ages 11-16 from the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC) sample. Confirmatory factor analyses tested multiple p factor models, with the primary model being a second-order, multi-reporter p factor. We then tested the co

Recent neuro-cognitive theories of dyslexia presume that all dyslexics have the same type of brain abnormality irrespective of the particular writing system their language uses. In this article, we indicate how this presumption is inconsistent with cross-linguistic investigations of reading and dyslexia. There are two main issues. First, the information-processing requirements of reading vary greatly across different orthographies. Second, it is known that even within a single orthography there are different subtypes of dyslexia. Consequentially, it cannot be the case, not even within a single

This paper discusses the difference between self-identification and the self/other differentiation. Self-identification relies on the congruence of self-generated movements and their expected consequences, i.e., on the temporal correlation between the set of signals (command signals, sensory reafferences) that are related to that movement. Only the origin of the movement (i.e., whether it originates from the self or not), not its destination or its goal, is relevant for self-identification. Self/other differentiation requires both that one can understand the actions others perform, and that on

This study compared students with and without learning disabilities (LD) on their recall of academic information and information encountered in the students' everyday lives. The academic recall measures included a sentence listening span test, a rhyming words working memory test, and a visual matrix working memory task. Students' cued recall of all the tasks was also measured. The everyday working memory tasks included a dance episode event recall test; a library procedure recall test; and recall tests of commonly found objects, such as a coin, a telephone, and a McDonald's sign. Compared to s

The term "neuropsychology" covers the study of the higher functions of man with respect to the structure and the functional organisation of the nervous system, and therefore clearly belongs to the neurological sciences. The nervous system forms a whole, composed of innumerable integrating mechanisms, ordered into a hierarchy of levels ranging from the most elementary activities, which are the most genetically determined and the most permanent, to the activities that are predominantly acquired, which are the most mobile and the most reversible ones. All parts of the nervous system--ranging from

The effects of combined stresses due to control activity and vertical mechanical vibration on man are analysed. In the first part, the processes in the human being at those superposed stresses are shown in a deterministic way, starting from morphological and physiological facts, which leads to a division of the organismic data processing in the fields of information reception, central information processing and information output. Hypothesis of the effects of vibration in the parts of information reception and information output as well as indications to measurable variables at laboratory expe

Puberty is a time of intense reorganization of brain structure and a high-risk period for the onset of mental health problems, with variations in pubertal timing and tempo intensifying this risk. We conducted 2 systematic reviews of articles published up to February 1, 2024, focusing on 1) the role of brain structure in the relationship between puberty and mental health, and 2) precision psychiatry research evaluating the utility of puberty in making individualized predictions of mental health outcomes in young people. The first review provides inconsistent evidence about whether and how puber

Mental illness has recurrently been found to be Othered by the lay public, although few researchers have examined the affective and implicit processes involved. To explore this, we triangulated facial electromyography (EMG), self-reports, and individual interview data, finding participants to Other mental illness, a process that involved disgust, fear and pity. Furthermore, mental illness was considered to have the potential to permeate, posing a contagious threat. This research highlights the need to fully explore the forms of understanding, which maintain mental-health related stigma, includ

It has been suggested that overgeneral memory (OGM) represents a vulnerability marker for depression [Williams, J. M. G., Barnhofer, T., Crane, C., Hermans, D., Raes, F., Watkins, E., et al. (2007). Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder. Psychological Bulletin, 133, 122-148]. One important underlying mechanism involved is rumination [e.g., Watkins, E., & Teasdale, J. D. Fatigue is a frequent complaint after traumatic brain injury (TBI), irrespective of severity. We aimed to identify factors contributing to mental fatigue in various severities of TBI. This retrospective study examined fatigue, information processing speed, coping, and emotional distress in individuals with mild TBI (n = 56), moderate-severe TBI (n = 25), and healthy controls (n = 30). The aim was to assess differences in information processing speed between patients and controls and, within the patient groups, to explore how information processing speed, coping, and emotional distress relate t

Over the last decade, the academic-activist trans depathologization perspective has contributed to a change in the conceptualization of gender transition processes. Observing an interrelation between psychiatrization and transphobic violence, trans depathologization activist groups and allies demand the removal of the diagnostic classification of transexuality as a mental disorder. Furthermore, they have developed trans health care models and legal gender recognition processes based on depathologization and human rights perspectives. They propose changing the role of mental health professional

In daily life, perceivers often need to predict and interpret the behavior of group agents, such as corporations and governments. Although research has investigated how perceivers reason about individual members of particular groups, less is known about how perceivers reason about group agents themselves. The present studies investigate how perceivers understand group agents by investigating the extent to which understanding the 'mind' of the group as a whole shares important properties and processes with understanding the minds of individuals. Experiment 1 demonstrates that perceivers are som

BACKGROUND: Given the complex challenges facing people experiencing homelessness, existing mental health recovery models are probably insufficient for this population.
AIMS: To investigate qualitative accounts of mental health personal recovery in people with experience of homelessness, and to adapt the widely adopted connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment (CHIME) model of personal recovery to better represent the experiences of this population.
METHOD: PROSPERO registration no. CRD42023366842. A systematic review identified qualitative studies investigating first-person acco

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common form of inherited mental retardation, characterized by moderate-to-severe mental retardation, attention deficits, and hyperactivity. This disease results from the expansion of a trinucleotide repeat (CGG) within the X-linked fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene, which leads to the lack of the product of the FMR1 gene-fragile X mental retardation protein. Many mental disorders such as FXS and Rett syndrome are thought to originate during early developmental period, but recent findings have suggested the involvement of the processes in the adult

Whether children with and without mild mental retardation matched on word recognition skills rely similarly on phonemic processes during comprehension was examined. In a word memory task, children with mental retardation showed no decrement in performance with phonemically similar word lists, whereas children without mental retardation recalled fewer words from lists containing phonemically similar words. In a listening comprehension task, both groups evidenced similar decreases in accuracy when sentences contained phonemically similar words. In a reading comprehension task, although neither g
