'You Understand Me': Experiences of Peer Mentors Delivering Support for a Mindfulness Intervention to Family Carers of People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Family carers of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at increased risk of stress and often face barriers to accessing appropriate supports. Peer support can enhance the effects of well-being interventions, yet research is limited regarding family carers' experiences within peer support roles. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 peer mentors (four adult siblings, six parent carers) paid to support other family carers undertaking an online mindfulness intervention. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. The data were analysed using Fr

Growing Healthy Together: protocol for a randomized clinical trial using parent mentors for early childhood obesity intervention in a Latino community.

BACKGROUND: Latino children in the US experience high rates of obesity, increasing their risk of subsequent diabetes. There are few clinical trials among low-income, Latino families to test interventions that account for and address their unique situation. METHODS/DESIGN: This trial, conducted in a Head Start (early childhood education) setting, randomly assigns children 2-5 years of age who have obesity by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines (at least 95th percentile body mass index) and their parents to one of three conditions: (1) control, (2) parent mentor with an

Nurse mentor perceptions in the delivery of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program to support patients living in rural areas: An interpretive study.

Home-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs improve health outcomes for people diagnosed with heart disease. Mentoring of patients by nurses trained in CR has been proposed as an innovative model of cardiac care. Little is known however, about the experience of mentors facilitating such programs and adapting to this new role. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore nurse mentor perceptions of their role in the delivery of a home-based CR program for rural patients unable to attend a hospital or outpatient CR program. Seven nurses mentored patients by telephone providing patients w

Results of a randomized controlled trial of a peer mentor HIV/STI prevention intervention for women over an 18 month follow-up.

Despite numerous behavioral interventions designed for women, rates of HIV and STIs are increasing. Interventions are needed that reach a large number of at-risk individuals. This study was a randomized clinical trial of a HIV/STI behavioral intervention conducted in Baltimore, MD, USA. Heterosexual women (n = 169) completed a baseline and three semiannual follow-up visits. Participants were randomized into a standard of care comparison condition or a Peer Mentor condition. At the 6-month follow-up, Peer Mentors were less likely to have multiple sex partners [AOR: 0.28 (95% CI: 0.13, 0.63)]. A

Experiences, perceptions and potential impact of community-based mentor mothers supporting pregnant and postpartum women with HIV in Kenya: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Community-based mentor mothers (cMMs) are women living with HIV who provide peer support to pregnant/postpartum women living with HIV (PWLWH) to enhance antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, retention in care and prevent perinatal transmission of HIV. The goal of this study was to explore the experiences, perceptions, mechanisms and health impact of cMMs on PWLWH in Kenya from the perspective of cMMs. METHODS: We conducted a prospective mixed-methods study in southwestern Kenya in 2015-2018. In the qualitative phase, we completed in-depth interviews with cMMs to explore their

An innovation for improving maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) service delivery in Jigawa State, northern Nigeria: a qualitative study of stakeholders' perceptions about clinical mentoring.

BACKGROUND: An effective capacity building process for healthcare workers is required for the delivery of quality health care services. Work-based training can be applied for the capacity building of health care workers while causing minimum disruption to service delivery within health facilities. In 2012, clinical mentoring was introduced into the Jigawa State Health System through collaboration between the Jigawa State Ministry of Health and the Partnership for Transforming Health Systems Phase 2 (PATHS2). This study evaluates the perceptions of different stakeholders about clinical mentorin

Navigating study demands in first-year midwifery education: Mixed-methods insights from students, university lecturers and clinical mentor midwives.

AIM: To examine:(1) study-related demands faced by first-year midwifery students; and (2) support provided to help them cope with demands. BACKGROUND: The recent national transition from vocational training into tertiary midwifery education in Germany resulted in a new teaching environment and adjusted clinical placement settings. Capacity building at tertiary level enabled innovative services to foster supportive learning environments for midwifery students, including processes for onboarding. However, little is known about students' perceived challenges during this time. DESIGN: Convergent

Impacting the substance abuse epidemic in America: A mixed methods examination of mentors of youth who experience substance use disorders within their families.

This study aimed to explore the experiences and needs of mentors in Camp Mariposa; a program designed to prevent substance use among youth who have a family member with a substance use disorder (SUD). Using a mixed-methods design, the study included a quantitative survey and focus groups. Of 280 eligible mentors, 116 (41 %) completed the survey, with 24 (21 %) participating in follow-up focus groups. Descriptive statistics illustrate survey data findings, and qualitative findings reflect themes that emerged from focus groups. Mentors reported positive experiences working with peers and youth b

Association between social relationship of mentors and depressive symptoms in first-time mothers during the transition from pregnancy to 6-months postpartum.

BACKGROUND: First-time motherhood is characterized by high psychosocial distress, which untreated, has serious consequences. Informal social support provided by specially trained mentors may be protective against postpartum depressive symptoms but may vary by women's social relationship with the mentor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of types of mentors on women's depressive symptoms between late pregnancy to 6-months postpartum and the characteristics of women associated with mentor type. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data from a community sampl

The relationship between working alliance with peer mentors and eating psychopathology in a digital 6-week guided self-help intervention for anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The quality of working alliance (WA) is associated with treatment outcomes across several types of psychiatric disorders and psychological interventions. This study examined the role of WA with peer mentors (people with lived experience of illness) and student mentors (graduated psychology students) in a 6-week, digital, guided self-help (GSH) intervention for anorexia nervosa. METHOD: Ninety-nine patients rated weekly, for 6 weeks: (a) eating psychopathology using the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) and (b) WA with a student mentor (n = 14)

'More than just chitchat': a qualitative study concerning the need and potential format of a peer mentor programme for patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Patients recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have specific educational and supportive needs. These could partly be addressed with mentoring by other patients living with RA. This qualitative study explores stakeholder perceptions towards peer mentoring in early RA care. METHODS: Two focus groups with patients with early RA (n=10), one with patient organisation representatives (n=5), one with rheumatologists (n=8) and one with rheumatology nurses (n=5) were held. Two patient research partners supported analysis and interpretation. RESULTS: Four overarching themes wer

"They do not see us as one of them": a qualitative exploration of mentor mothers' working relationships with healthcare workers in rural North-Central Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In HIV programs, mentor mothers (MMs) are women living with HIV who provide peer support for other women to navigate HIV care, especially in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Nigeria has significant PMTCT program gaps, and in this resource-constrained setting, lay health workers such as MMs serve as task shifting resources for formal healthcare workers and facility-community liaisons for their clients. However, challenging work conditions including tenuous working relationships with healthcare workers can reduce MMs' impact on PMTCT outcomes. This study
