A group of 35 patients with nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts is reviewed in order to investigate the diagnostic and therapeutic features of these rare conditions. In most cases the cysts were localised in the liver. Other localisations were the kidney (9 cases), the mesenteric area (2 cases), the adrenals (2 cases), the spleen and the pancreas (one case each). The clinical symptoms were essentially determinated by the size of the cysts, regardless their visceral localisation. Ultrasonography was the most efficient procedure for their detection, although this method's precision for the visce

A rare case of a jejunal mesenteric pseudocyst treated by robotic resection is reported. A 25-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with intermittent abdominal discomfort which was exacerbated by strenuous physical activities. Physical examination revealed a fluctuant mass without tenderness. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a 4 cm-sized non-enhancing heterogeneous mass on a proximal small bowel loop mesentery. Based on the findings, a differential diagnosis of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, hematoma, desmoid tumor, and mesenteric cyst was made. Robotic diagnostic laparo

Multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm characterized by multiple cysts adhering to the abdominal cavity. The symptoms are nonspecific, and their severity appears to be related to the size and location of the cysts. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with morbid obesity in whom a multiloculated mesenteric mass was incidentally discovered on abdominal ultrasound. Complementary imaging studies revealed a multicystic peritoneal tumour with a maximum diameter of 32cm, located in the pelvis and extending to the right hemiabdomen. Histologically, multiple cysts lined by meso

Human echinococcosis remains a complex problem that may affect several organs, and requires mostly surgical management. We present two cases with uncommon locations of hydatid cysts that were successfully managed in our hospital during the last two years. The first case was a 62-year-old woman with a multicystic lesion in her right thigh that was radically excised, and histology confirmed the diagnosis of echinococcosis. The second case was a 78-year-old man with multiple large intraabdominal hydatid cysts that required a complex operation, including splenectomy, partial removal of the liver c

Choledochal cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies of the biliary tree, commonly presenting in infancy, generally in the 1(st) year of life. Presentation in adult life is less common, accounting for 20% of cases. A 19-year-old female patient presented to the Emergency Department with severe abdominal distension, a palpable abdominal mass, mild jaundice and low grade fever. Ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen showed a massive septated cystic lesion filling the entire abdomen with a significant mass effect on surrounding structures. BACKGROUND/AIM: In the variety of congenital abdominal cystic lesions (CACL) of different origin, ovarian cyst is the most common intra-abdominal pathology in female neonates. The prognosis and timing of treatment varies depending on the nature of CACL. This study aimed to assess the results of diagnostics and treatment of CACL.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 39 cases of CACL, with the spectrum including ovarian, enteric, mesenteric and pancreatic origin. Outcome of minimally invasive surgery, open surgery or conservative approach was analyzed.
RESULTS: Twent

Duodenal duplication cysts are a rare subtype of alimentary tract duplications cysts, consisting of 7% of all the duplications. We report a rare case of neonatal duodenal duplication cyst presenting as a palpable abdominal mass and features of gastric outlet obstruction. A 27-day-old male child presented with complaints of icterus, non-bilious vomiting after every feed and right-sided abdominal lump for the last 15 days. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed well-defined peripherally enhancing cystic lesion noted in the subhepatic region extending up to the right lumbar region. On

Enteric duplication has cystic and tubular varieties. A male infant presented with a large cystic, well-demarcated mass in the right flank. On exploratory laparotomy, multiple cystic and tubular lesions were present adjacent to the mesenteric border of the small bowel along with malrotation of the small bowel. The tubule-cystic structure was excised along with the involved normal bowel segment and Ladd's procedure was performed. Histopathological evaluation revealed an intestinal duplication cyst. The occurrence of midgut malrotation and volvulus along with duplication is uncommon. The cyst's

Case report of a 48 year old female patient with a large abdominal mass, found to be a true cyst of the pancreas following surgical removal. Plain film findings were a large soft tissue mass in the abdomen to the left of the midline, displacement of small bowel and colon descendens with splenic flexure to the right, and upward displacement of stomach and left kidney. A renal scan showed decreased uptake in the area of the lower pole of the left kidney. Angiography demonstrated the mass to be of cystic nature with the cyst wall getting its blood supply from two left renal arteries. Celiac and m

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XGI) is a rare process. Colonic XGI is extremely rare. We present a case report of XGI arising within an intra-abdominal cyst involving the transverse colon. A 28-year-old man presented with abdominal discomfort. He underwent a computed tomography abdomen-pelvis, which found three subcutaneous collections and a large cystic intra-abdominal structure. The decision was made for resection. Intraoperatively, the cyst originated from the pelvis and was adherent to the surrounding tissues. Histology from the lesion revealed XGI extending into the surrounding tissue.

Müllerian cyst of the mesentery and retroperitoneum is an extremely rare disease entity. Only two photomicrograph reports have been published. A 47-year-old Korean woman presented with abdominal distention. A mesenteric cystic mass, measuring 25 x 23 x 18 cm, was found between the liver and right adnexa without any connection with adjacent organs. The cyst was multilocular with gray-white, rubbery walls of relatively uniform 0.2 cm thickness. Microscopically, the lining cells were ciliated and cuboidal to low columnar with an incomplete lining of smooth muscle bundles, adipose tissues, lymphov

Alimentary tract duplications (ATDs) are rare congenital anomalies, with an incidence of 1 in 4500 individuals. Patients with these lesions present in a variety of ways, and although histologically benign, ATDs can lead to lethal complications including volvulus, intussusception, or bowel obstruction. Irrespective of anatomical location, the epithelial lining of ATDs contains ectopic acid-secreting mucosa in more than 50% of cases, which can lead to ulceration, bleeding, or transmural erosion and perforation. We report an unusual case of a child who presented with small bowel obstruction cause

INTRODUCTION: Small bowel volvulus due to mesenteric lipoma is a rare clinical entity. It poses both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Small bowel mesenteric lipoma is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. We present the case of a patient admitted to our emergency department for a small bowel volvulus due to a mesenteric lipoma with small intestine obstruction.
PATIENT AND METHOD: A 61 years old man, with diabetes since 25 years with antidiabetics oral medication, vaccinated against Covid 19 (two doses) who presented with peri-umbilical pain for two months, constipation and melaena,

Gastrointestinal duplications can affect any part of the alimentary tract and are notorious for their variable presentation. Their association with malrotation and midgut volvulus is rare. We describe an 8-year old boy presented with episodes of abdominal pain. Radiological workup showed whirlpool sign and abnormal relationship of mesenteric vessels. At operation, malrotation with chronic volvulus was found. Incidentally, a jejunal communicating duplication cyst was also noted.

BACKGROUND: Jejunoileal atresia is most commonly attributed to intrauterine mesenteric vascular accidents. Both segmental volvulus and enteric duplication cysts are recognized yet uncommon causes of fetal vascular compromise capable of inducing intestinal ischemia. The simultaneous occurrence of ileal atresia, segmental volvulus, and enteric duplication cyst in a single neonate is exceedingly rare and offers valuable insight into the vascular pathogenesis of intestinal atresia.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a male term neonate admitted eleven hours after birth for bilious vomiting

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the safety and efficiency of laparoscopically treated liver cysts in children.
METHODS: From September 2001 to July 2004, 34 patients underwent laparoscopic treatment of hydatid cysts of the liver. All patients had chest x-ray, abdominal sonography, and hydatid serology. The different stages of the procedure were the same as in open surgery: puncture, aspiration, injection of scolicidal agent, reaspiration, removal of proligerous membrane, and resection of the dome.
RESULTS: The patients' mean average age was 7 years and 7 months (range, 3-14 years). The number

Costello syndrome (CS) was described in 1977 by Costello who reported two unrelated children with a new syndrome comprising short stature, redundant skin of the neck, palms, soles, and fingers, curly hair, papillomata around the mouth and nares, and mental retardation. Several additional cases have been reported since then. Herein we report two patients with Costello syndrome; one of these patients had associated mesenteric cyst.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric lymphangioma is a rare cystic lesion that may present as acute abdomen due to events such as axial torsion. This is a case report of a small bowel mesenteric lymphangioma presented with axial torsion, which required emergency surgery after repeated abdominal symptoms and hospital visits failed to identify the lesion. This report includes a review of the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old boy was presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT revealed the whirlpool sign, leading to a diagnosis of small bowel volvulus.
