[Optometric eye screening in schools : First results of a pilot project on logistical feasibility].

BACKGROUND: We present a pilot project to improve eye health in schoolchildren: annual optometric screening with a focus on early detection of school myopia. The logistical proof-of-concept is illustrated by way of a pilot project at a state high school in North Rhine-Westphalia. The collected biometric parameters also contribute to the collection of epidemiological data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On organized examination days objective and subjective refractions of schoolchildren in grades 5-7 (ages 9-16 years) were determined, children were tested for abnormalities in binocular vision and the p

Visual rehabilitation of a fighter pilot by utilizing a combination of contact lenses: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating keratoplasty is often necessary when corneal scars impact the visual axis. Post-surgical irregular astigmatism resulting from corneal deformity may necessitate the use of rigid gas permeable or scleral contact lenses to enhance visual quality. However, lens fitting becomes challenging when irregularity involves the peripheral cornea. Pinhole contact lenses are used to improve visual acuity and reduce glare in patients with iris transillumination defects. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes the successful design and fitting of a quadrant asymmetric peripheral

Normal values and standard deviations for pupil diameter and interpupillary distance in subjects aged 1 month to 19 years.

Normal values of pupil diameters and interpupillary distances (PDs) were measured in a population of 1311 subjects (in 4294 visits) ranging from 1 month of age to slightly over 19 years of age. Subjects in this study were recruited from birth announcements in a local newspaper for a developmental vision project. Pupil sizes were measured photographically when the corneas were illuminated by 15.9 +/- 0.5 lux ambient illumination (i.e. under mesopic conditions). Interpupillary distance was measured with an interocular distance rule while the subject fixated an object at 0.66 m distance. These PD

Trifocal intraocular lenses versus bifocal intraocular lenses after cataract extraction among participants with presbyopia.

BACKGROUND: Presbyopia occurs when the lens of the eyes loses its elasticity leading to loss of accommodation. The lens may also progress to develop cataract, affecting visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. One option of care for individuals with presbyopia and cataract is the use of multifocal or extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. Although trifocal and bifocal IOLs are designed to restore three and two focal points respectively, trifocal lens may be preferable because it restores near, intermediate, and far vision, and may also provide a greater range of
