Contact dermatitis is a common cutaneous inflammatory condition, triggered by exposure to irritant substances or allergens. Nickel is the most prevalent allergen, a metal widely used in accessories, furniture, office materials, food and in industry, with multiple exposure pathways, making it difficult to assess which exposure is causing allergic dermatitis. Here, we report a case of an administrative worker with chronic hand eczema, limited to the radial metacarpophalangeal region of the left hand, caused by occupational exposure to nickel, confirmed by nickel deposition test on the hand and a

Protection from heavy metals is a problem that has not been solved in a satisfactory manner so far. Usage of complexing agents in therapy of exposed workers results in both favorable outcome and recognized adverse effects. In the field of environmental protection, they cannot be used in practice, meaning that the risk of escape of metal pollutant from factory premises and their attack on the environnement remains present. The age of chemistry ('Chemistry, key to better living') has led to potent development of industry producing, at the same time, major problems induced by diffusion of metal p

Literature was surveyed concerning the teratological testing of chemicals, to which large numbers of workers are occupationally exposed. They include metals, plastics monomers and additives, solvents, and other organic chemicals. The effective doses used in the studies were compared to the potential exposures in the occupational environment as regulated by hygienic standards. In light of the animal experiments, the TLVs for some organic chemicals, particularly for acrylonitrile, methacrylate esters, styrene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, methylene chloride, toluene and xylene, appeared too hig

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Benzene is harmful to the hematopoietic system and can cause leukemia. However, benzene is still being used in various industries including furniture, rubber, plastic products, and metal product manufacturing.
WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: The white blood cell count of workers in general equipment, special equipment, chemical raw materials, and chemical products manufacturing decreased significantly. The enterprises in which benzene concentration exceeded the occupational exposure limit were small enterprises and private enterprises.
WHAT ARE THE IMP

Singapore has a resident population of 3,000,000 and a workforce of 1,780,000. Most are employed in manufacturing, services and commerce (245,000). From 1996 to 1998, 3472 cases were notified to the Ministry of Manpower and confirmed as occupational diseases. Noise-induced hearing loss accounted for 82% of cases, while only 11% of cases were industrial dermatitis. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis was not common, comprising approximately one third of the 369 cases of industrial dermatitis that were notified. However, we believe that the majority of cases are not notified to the authorit

Penetrating neck and chest injuries are a common form of occupational injuries. We hereby report a unique case in which a metallic rod had penetrated the left chest and neck of a plastic factory worker. The patient was vitally stable when he presented to Emergency Room. Chest X-ray was performed and the patient was rushed to the operating room. VATS (video assisted thoracoscopic surgery) and neck dissection was done for retrieval of the metallic rod. On table, endoscopy was also done to rule out injury to oesophagus. No injury to vital structures was found and the subsequent recovery was uneve

In humans, acquired copper deficiency anemia is rare. This report describes a 58-yr-old man with metal pica, especially coins, who presented with symptomatic anemia. His workup led to the diagnosis of zinc-induced copper deficiency. We believe that, in this man, leaching of zinc from pennies explained the clinical and laboratory findings. This case demonstrates that health care workers should consider the possibility of zinc-induced copper deficiency when confronted with patients with unexplained anemia who have ingested coins or other zinc-containing metals.

Beryllium is an important industrial metal because of its unusual material properties: it is lighter than aluminum and six times stronger than steel. Often alloyed with other metals such as copper, beryllium is a key component of materials used in the aerospace and electronics industries. Beryllium has a small neutron cross-section, which makes it useful in the production of nuclear weapons and in sealed neutron sources. Unfortunately, beryllium is one of the most toxic elements in the periodic table. It is responsible for the often-fatal lung disease, Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) or beryll

Despite the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) worldwide, its environmental determinants in complex occupational settings remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between occupational mixed exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), and metals and MetS risk, and identify key pollutants for occupational health monitoring and risk management. We recruited 1205 coal chemical workers in central China and measured urinary levels of 14 PAH metabolites, 6 BTX metabolites, and 40 metals. Associations between mixed expos

BACKGROUND: Metal ions released from arthroplasty devices are largely cleared in urine, leading to high exposure in renal tissues. Validated early markers of renal damage are routinely used to monitor workers in heavy metal industries, and renal risk can be quantified in these industries. It is unclear if the ion levels in patients with metal-on-metal hips are sufficient to cause renal damage.
QUESTION: Does metal-on-metal (MOM) bearing use over a 10-year period lead to elevation of early renal markers compared with the levels expected in subjects with no metal exposure?
METHODS: We retrospe

BACKGROUND: Shipbreaking workers are typically exposed to a wide range of hazardous chemicals. However, long-term follow-up studies of their mortality patterns are lacking. This study examined mortality among shipbreaking workers over a 24-year follow-up period.
METHODS: A total of 4,962 shipbreaking workers were recruited from the database of the Kaohsiung Shipbreaking Workers Union. The data were then linked to the Taiwan National Death Registry from 1985 to 2008. The mortality ratios-standardized for age and calendar years-(SMRs) for various causes of deaths were calculated with reference

Concerns about chemical exposure in the electronics manufacturing industry have long been recognized, but data are lacking in Southeast Asia. We conducted a study in Batam, Indonesia, to evaluate chemical exposures in electronics facilities, using participatory research and biological monitoring approaches. A convenience sample of 36 workers (28 exposed, 8 controls) was recruited, and urine samples were collected before and after shifts. Five solvents (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, benzene, and xylenes) were found in 46%-97% of samples, and seven metals (arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, tin,

Nowadays, despite improvements in safety rules and inspections in the metal industry, foundry workers are not free from burn accidents. Injuries caused by molten metals include burns secondary to molten iron, aluminium, zinc, copper, brass, bronze, manganese, lead and steel. Molten aluminium is one of the most common causative agents of burns (60%); however, only a few publications exist concerning injuries from molten aluminium. The main mechanisms of lesion from molten aluminium include direct contact of the molten metal with the skin or through safety apparel, or when the metal splash burns

853 hard metal workers were patch tested with nickel sulphate 5%, potassium dichromate 0.5% and cobalt chloride 1%, each in petrolatum. Non-allergic reactions appeared in 6.5% of the nickel tests, 13% of the chromium tests and 18.3% of the cobalt tests. Most of the individuals with positive, poral or pustular reactions were retested with serial dilutions of metal salts in pet. and in water. The accuracy of a positive initial nickel reaction was 83%, a chromium reaction 40% and a cobalt reaction 62%. The nonallergic reactions were partly reproducible and correlated with both the type of patch t

A large auto manufacturer screened its workers who belonged to the Pattern Makers (wood and metal workers) League of North America for colon cancer. Four-hundred nine asymptomatic workers were screened. Our group was only involved in performing most of the fiberoptic sigmoidoscopies in this study. This provided us with an opportunity to evaluate the practicality of the use of fiberoptic sigmoidoscopy for mass screening at a work place. The average extent of insertion of the sigmoidoscopy was 55 cm, and the average time required was 10 min. The prevalence of polyps was 10.76%, and only one in s

The chest radiograph is extensively used in evaluating workers at risk for developing occupational lung disease. Other pulmonary imaging techniques used in conjunction with the initial chest radiograph include conventional computed tomography, high resolution computed tomography, and gallium scintigraphy. This chapter evaluates the use of these techniques and their appropriate applications in the pneumoconioses, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, berylliosis, and hard metal diseases.

A novel immunological method has been developed for detecting antibodies (IgG molecules) specific to beryllium, a light metal used in industry and capable of causing chronic beryllium disease. Beryllium metal was vacuum deposited onto commercially available immunological microsticks, which were then exposed to test plasma containing the putative antibodies. Antigen-antibody complexes were located using a biotin-avidin amplification method. One employee diagnosed with chronic beryllium disease and one diagnosed as "sensitized" (lymphocyte transformation positive) exhibited antibody titers graph
