Heavy metals and experimental atherosclerosis. Effect of lead intoxication on rabbit plasma lipoproteins.

Previous studies have suggested that exposure to heavy metals may be a risk factor in coronary atherosclerotic heart disease in humans as well as in experimental animals. Little is known however on the mechanism underlying the effect of heavy metals on the development of atherosclerosis. In this study we tried to ascertain whether exposure to lead might: (a) alter plasma lipoprotein in normally fed rabbits; and (b) aggravate the hyperlipidemia usually found in cholesterol-fed animals. Rabbits were fed a normal diet or a diet containing 1% cholesterol in the presence or in the absence of 0.5% o

Determination of some heavy metals concentrations in green and yellow wheat crops from Iraqi fields: a comparative analysis of heavy metal accumulation.

Wheat is a crucial staple crop in Iraq, essential for food security. However, heavy metal contamination from sources like irrigation water and fertilizers can pose risks to both plant health and human consumption. This study compares heavy metal levels in green and yellow wheat plants, in five agricultural regions in Iraq: Baghdad, Kirkuk, Salah Al-Din, Al Anbar, and Basra, addressing a gap in research specific to Iraqi wheat and its safety. The research analyzed six heavy metals-iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb)-in different plant parts using atomi

Effect of heavy metals on pH buffering capacity and solubility of Ca, Mg, K, and P in non-spiked and heavy metal-spiked soils.

In many parts of the world, soil acidification and heavy metal contamination has become a serious concern due to the adverse effects on chemical properties of soil and crop yield. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pH (in the range of 1 to 3 units above and below the native pH of soils) on calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) solubility in non-spiked and heavy metal-spiked soil samples. Spiked samples were prepared by cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) as chloride salts and incubating soils for 40 days. The pH buffering capacity

Rapid Isothermal Detection of Heavy Metals via Transcription-Factor-Gated DNA Strand Synthesis.

Conventional methods for monitoring toxic heavy metals typically require sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and leave a critical gap for rapid, on-site detection. Herein we present Transcription-factor-Occluded Nick Extension or TONE, a rapid, isothermal biosensing platform for heavy metal detection that exploits allosteric transcription factor (aTF) regulation to gate DNA strand-displacement amplification. In this approach, operator sequences modified with deoxyinosine (dI) substitutions are employed. When bound by an aTF, the dI sites are shielded from cleavage by endonuclease V. Upon

Engineered MXenes as analytical tools for the health risk assessment of heavy metals.

Two-dimensional MXenes are attractive materials because of their metallic conductivity, abundant surface terminations, and high aspect ratio, which can be coupled with organic molecules and magnetic structures to produce multifunctional architectures. Here, we engineered a diphenylthiocarbazone-grafted magnetic MXene, DTZ-Ti3C2@Fe3O4, through a stepwise synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles on Ti3C2 nanosheets and subsequent grafting of diphenylthiocarbazone covalently onto surface functional groups. This route yielded a hierarchically structured 2D hybrid, in which (i) Ti3C2 provided an extende

Association between exposure to environmental heavy metals and gastrointestinal and urinary cancer mortality.

Environmental exposure to heavy metals has been associated with cancer. Nonetheless, the effects of exposure to combined heavy metals on cancer mortality of urinary and gastrointestinal systems have not been examined. This study assessed the long-term association between environmental exposure to multiple heavy metals and cancer mortality rates in the digestive and urinary tracts. The death rates/100,000 inhabitants over 41 years were collected from Santo Amaro, the exposed town with a former lead smelter, and Ribeira do Pombal, the reference town, in Bahia, Brazil. The exposure duration, age

Nephrotic Syndrome Associated With Heavy Metals Exposure: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Heavy metals are found in many products used in everyday life. In addition, many workers are exposed to higher concentrations of such metals in their work environment. Many of these metals may cause toxic effects in humans and there are many reports relating them to the occurrence of kidney disorders such as nephrotic syndrome. In this study, we present a case of a 38-year-old woman with nephrotic syndrome suspected to be related to heavy metal toxicity, after ruling out all other secondary causes. At the same time, she proved refractory to multiple therapies. Furthermore, a related literature

Stress mitigation mechanism of rice leaf microbiota amid atmospheric deposition of heavy metals.

Leaf microbiota have been extensively applied in the biological control of plant diseases, but their crucial roles in mitigating atmospheric heavy metal (HM) deposition and promoting plant growth remain poorly understood. This study demonstrates that elevated atmospheric HM deposition on rice leaves significantly shapes distinct epiphytic and endophytic microbiota across all growth stages. HM stress consistently leads to the dominance of epiphytic Pantoea and endophytic Microbacterium in rice leaves, particularly during the booting and filling stages. Leaf-bound HMs stimulate the differentiati

Prioritized regional management for antibiotics and heavy metals in animal manure across China.

High levels of antibiotics and heavy metals in animal manure pose a potential threat to both the ecological environment and public health. A regional knowledge of their distribution and risk assessment across China remains unclear. A dataset containing 4082 records covering a total of forty-two antibiotics and eight heavy metals was established for animal manure across China. The results showed that the residual concentration of antibiotics was in the order of tetracyclines > aminoglycosides > fluoroquinolones > macrolides > sulfonamides > β-lactams, and that of heavy metals is Zn > Cu > Cr >

Bifunctional Amine- and Thiol-Modified Ti3C2Tx MXene for Trace Detection of Heavy Metals.

Surface functionalization of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, also known as MXenes, is a powerful approach for modification of their physical and chemical properties for new applications. In this study, we demonstrate the synthesis of a bifunctional Ti3C2Tx MXene modified with amine and thiol groups through a facile condensation reaction. We successfully employed the resulting NH2/SH-Ti3C2Tx MXene as a solid phase in the ultrasonic-assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (d-μ-SPE) method for the analytical determination of heavy metals at tr

Genomic insights into Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW coping with petroleum-heavy metals combined pollution.

Worldwide marine compound contamination by petroleum products and heavy metals is a burgeoning environmental concern. Pseudoalteromonas, prevalently distributed in marine environment, has been proven to degrade petroleum and plays an essential role in the fate of oil pollution under the combined pollution. Nevertheless, the research on the reference genes is still incomplete. Therefore, this study aims to thoroughly investigate the reference genes represented by Pseudoalteromonas sp. JSTW via whole-genome sequencing. Next-generation sequencing technology unfolded a genome of 4,026,258 bp, data

Investigation of Fertilizing Capacity of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Sperm Exposed to Heavy Metals.

The objective of our study was to investigate the effects of heavy metals on the fertilizing capacity of exposed zebrafish sperm, on embryonic survival, and on occurrence of embryonic deformities following fertilization with exposed sperm. It is important to test heavy metals because they are well-known pollutants. Sperm of externally fertilizing species can get in contact with pollutants found in aquatic environment. Zebrafish sperm, despite its advantages, has seldom been used in in vitro toxicological studies and no reports are available regarding the fertilizing capacity of exposed sperm.

[Isolation, identification and heavy metals biosorption of a lead and cadmium-tolerant strain].

Adding biological passivation agent during composting is one of the most effective ways to reduce the toxicity of heavy metals in contaminated livestock manure. To further improve biological passivation, we obtained a strain with high-heavy metal compounds tolerance to passivate heavy-metal contaminated manure and to characterize heavy-metal biosorption. High-tolerance microorganisms for lead and cadmium were isolated and screened from swine manure composting samples. The strain was identified by its morphology and molecular biology. After the influence of different pH, temperature and salt co
