[Microbiological diagnosis of pneumonia].

Pneumonia is an importance cause of mortality and morbidity in adults. Two types of pneumonia are defined: community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia with their corresponding etiology such as pneumococci or Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas or enterobacteriaceae, respectively. However, the reality is more complex with aspiration pneumonia, pneumonia in immunocompromised patient, and pneumonia in ventilated patients. Culture in the case of nosocomial pneumonia is especially important to obtain the antibiotic susceptibility of the infectious agent and to adjust therapy. Moreover for immuno

Grepafloxacin: microbiological properties.

Grepafloxacin is a new broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone characterized by having a methyl-substituted piperazine at the 7 position. It is a water-soluble racemate with both stereoisomers having the same activity. Its mode of action involves inhibition of topoisomerases II and IV. Grepafloxacin is not recognized by the NorA efflux mechanism in Staphylococcus aureus and, thus, some strains of Staphylococcus aureus that are resistant to other fluoroquinolones remain susceptible to grepafloxacin. Grepafloxacin has potent in vitro activity against streptococci and staphylococci, respiratory Gram-negat

Practical Guidance for Clinical Microbiology Laboratories: Microbiologic diagnosis of implant-associated infections.

SUMMARYImplant-associated infections (IAIs) pose serious threats to patients and can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These infections may be difficult to diagnose due, in part, to biofilm formation on device surfaces, and because even when microbes are found, their clinical significance may be unclear. Despite recent advances in laboratory testing, IAIs remain a diagnostic challenge. From a therapeutic standpoint, many IAIs currently require device removal and prolonged courses of antimicrobial therapy to effect a cure. Therefore, making an accurate diagnosis, defining

The benefits and biases of artificial intelligence in microbiology.

Microbiology has been greatly advanced by the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by improving the classification, isolation and detection of microorganisms in several fields where microbial exploration is carried out. With the ability to process large volumes of data from genomic sequences, biochemical profiles and imaging, AI enables faster and more accurate microbial identification than conventional techniques. In microbiome study, AI decodes complex microbial communities in environments, the human body and air by identifying unknown species and their ecological roles. AI is a val

Late-Onset Sepsis: Epidemiology, Microbiology, and Controversies in Practice.

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) is a common cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Causative pathogens vary by gestational age and geographic location. Preterm neonates in low-resource settings are at greatest risk and the majority of cases are due to gram-negative pathogens, especially Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species. Neonates in high-resource settings are more frequently infected with gram-positive organisms such as coagulase-negative Staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus. Viruses, fungi, and parasites can also cause LOS and should be considered if bacterial cultures are sterile.

The microbiology of diabetic foot infections: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers are a common complication of poorly controlled diabetes and often become infected, termed diabetic foot infection. There have been numerous studies of the microbiology of diabetic foot infection but no meta-analysis has provided a global overview of these data. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of bacteria isolated from diabetic foot infections using studies of any design which reported diabetic foot infection culture results. METHODS: The Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science and BIOSIS electronic databases were searched for studies published u

Clinical features, microbiology, and management of pediatric brainstem abscess.

PURPOSE: Brainstem abscess is a rare condition accounting for merely 1% of brain abscesses incidence in the pediatric population. This study aimed to present a single patient with a pontine abscess and review the literature to highlight clinical features, diagnosis, and management of brainstem abscess. METHODS: The PubMed database was screened for English-language articles concerning pediatric brainstem abscess. We, therefore, identified 22 publications, which concisely depict 23 cases. Our study reports on the 24th pediatric patient diagnosed with that entity. All included reports were analy

The Unique Microbiology and Molecular Pathogenesis of Mycoplasma genitalium.

Mycoplasma genitalium is increasingly appreciated as a common cause of sexually transmitted disease syndromes, including urethritis in men and cervicitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and possibly preterm birth, tubal factor infertility, and ectopic pregnancy in women. Despite these disease associations, which parallel those of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the mechanisms by which this pathogen elicits inflammation, causes cellular damage, and persists in its only natural host (humans) are unique and are not fully understood. The purpose of this review is to br
