Sarconesin: Sarconesiopsis magellanica Blowfly Larval Excretions and Secretions With Antibacterial Properties.

Larval therapy (LT) is an alternative treatment for healing chronic wounds; its action is based on debridement, the removal of bacteria, and stimulating granulation tissue. The most important mechanism when using LT for combating infection depends on larval excretions and secretions (ES). Larvae are protected against infection by a spectrum of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs); special interest in AMPs has also risen regarding understanding their role in wound healing since they degrade necrotic tissue and kill different bacteria during LT. Sarconesiopsis magellanica (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a

Antibiotic resistance patterns of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci from the skin surface of the human axilla and fourth toe cleft.

Samples of skin surface bacteria from 28 healthy subjects plated directly on to selective and non-selective media revealed that the proportion of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci (FURECs) resistant to erythromycin was significantly greater in the fourth toe cleft than in the axilla (P < 0.05). There were more erythromycin-resistant bacteria than tetracycline-resistant bacteria at both sites (P = 0.001 for the toe cleft; P < 0.01 for the axilla). In total, 160 distinct isolates were obtained, of which 42 were FURECs and 118 were aerobic coryneforms. Of these, 1

[Infection of the hip joint following psoas abscess. Case report and literature review].

Infection of the hip joint following psoas abscess is uncommon. In fact, only two cases have been reported in the literature. The clinical aspect of psoas abscess is characterised only by unspecific back pain and hip pain, which are responsible for delayed diagnosis. MRT and culture of joint aspirate can permit early diagnosis. The preferred treatment is immediate surgical intervention with debridement, drainage and antibiotic therapy. Percutaneous drainage of psoas abscess alone only rarely is sufficient. In cases of infected hip joint, resection arthroplasty often cannot be avoided. Followin

Resuscitation-Promoting Factor Accelerates Enrichment of Highly Active Tetrachloroethene/Polychlorinated Biphenyl-Dechlorinating Cultures.

The anaerobic bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is largely impeded by difficulties in massively enriching PCB dechlorinators in short periods of time. Tetrachloroethene (PCE) is often utilized as an alternative electron acceptor to preenrich PCB-dechlorinating bacteria. In this study, resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) was used as an additive to enhance the enrichment of the microbial communities involved in PCE/PCBs dechlorination. The results indicated that Rpf accelerates PCE dechlorination 3.8 to 5.4 times faster than control cultures. In Aroclor 1260-fed cultures, the a

Measurement of M. luteus endonuclease-sensitive lesions by alkaline elution.

The UV-endonuclease approach to detect DNA damage has been combined with the alkaline elution technique with a resultant marked increase in sensitivity compared to the conventional method using alkaline sedimentation. DNA from UV-irradiated cells was digested on an inert filter with an extract from Micrococcus luteus and then analyzed by alkaline elution. Endonuclease-sensitive sites (endo-sites) were measured after doses of 0.08-0.7 Jm-2 of UV-radiation. An estimate of endo-site production with UV radiation, 0.27 endo-sites/10(8) daltons of DNA/0.1 Jm-2, was similar to that usually seen at hi

Liquid chromatographic analysis of bacitracin methylene disalicylate in feed.

Because of its peptide structure, bacitracin is not chemically distinct from many matrixes such as feeds or residue samples. Thus, bacitracin must be isolated from the matrix components or chemically altered to form a distinct component. Because of the complexity of this problem, bacitracin is still analyzed almost exclusively by microbiological methods. However, advances in solid-phase extraction has made sample isolation from the matrix much more practical. In this investigation both strong-cation exchange and C8 columns were used to isolate bacitracin for liquid chromatographic (LC) analysi

Characterizing the microbiota of instrumentation in ophthalmology clinics during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: Increased ophthalmology-specific risk of novel coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission is well-established, increasing the fear of infection and causing associated decreased rates of procedures known to save vision. However, the potential transmission from exposure to clinic instrumentation is unknown, including which additional pathogens may be spreading in this context. This study seeks to fill this gap by characterizing the microbiota of instrumentation in ophthalmology clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifying potential sources of pathogenic spread encountered by pat

Inhibition of reporter gene expression in mammalian cells. Effects of distinct carcinogen lesions in DNA.

The effect of UV photoproducts or benzo[a]pyrene-diol-epoxide-I (BPDE-I) adducts in DNA on the transient expression of a reporter gene was measured in mammalian cells. The plasmid pRSVCAT was UV irradiated or treated with BPDE-I in vitro and co-transfected with undamaged pRSVBGAL into mouse and human fibroblasts. Variations in transfection efficiency among different cell lines were corrected by adjusting the volumes of cell extracts used in the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) assays to contain equal beta-galactosidase (BGAL) activity. The expression of the CAT gene was found to decrea

Effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide fumigation using an automated fogging system for environmental management in educational institutions.

The presence of microbial contamination on surfaces in early childhood education facilities poses a significant public health risk. Traditional cleaning methods often fail to fully eliminate pathogens, necessitating the development of more effective disinfection strategies. Hydrogen peroxide fumigation has emerged as a promising approach due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, environmental safety, and ability to penetrate biofilms, with potential implications for broader environmental management strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel, fully automated f
