Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) constitutes a critical global public health challenge, with its high recurrence rates intrinsically linked to spore germination, biofilm formation, and antibiotic resistance. Although microplastics are recognized as emerging foodborne contaminants, their potential to exacerbate the risk of CDI recurrence remains largely unexplored. This study systematically elucidates the impact of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on C. difficile (CD) pathogenicity, biofilm dynamics, and antibiotic resistance. Exposure to PS-MPs (0-400 μg/mL) induced intracellular oxi

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental pollutants that have received increasing attention in recent years. However, data on their potential risks to mammalian species remain limited. In this study, female rats were exposed via oral gavage to pristine (PPS) and fluorescent polystyrene (FPS) particles (5 μm diameter) over four estrous cycles. FPS-MPs were detected in hepatic tissue (133 ± 35 particles), confirming their translocation. Exposure to PPS-MPs increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) (2.58-fold) and catalase (CAT) activity (1.36-fold), while reducing protein sulfhydryl levels (PSH

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as emerging soil contaminants. However, the potential risks of MPs to agroecosystems have not been fully revealed, especially the compound toxic effects of MPs with co-existing organic or inorganic pollutants (OPs/IPs) in agricultural fields. In this study, we quantified the contributions of different agronomic practices to the sources of MPs in soil and highlighted the important influences of long-term tillage and fertilization on the migration and aging of MPs in agricultural fields. In addition, the antagonistic and synergistic interactions between MPs and

Catalase is a pivotal antioxidant enzyme that decomposes hydrogen peroxide and reduces oxidative stress. However, its low thermal and operational stability limits applications in challenging environments, particularly those contaminated with emerging pollutants such as polystyrene-based microplastics (PS-MPs). In this study, cryogels composed of Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-allyl glycidyl ether) [Poly(HEMA-co-AGE)] were synthesized and evaluated as immobilization matrices to enhance catalase stability. Cryogels containing varying AGE concentrations were characterized using FT-IR, SEM, T

Microplastics and their effects on health are a growing concern. While their full impact is not yet known, they are not harmless. Pancreatic diseases are increasingly common, even in children, which was once rare. This study examined pancreatic changes caused by PET microplastics in young organisms. Gilts received low (0.1 g/day) or high (1 g/day) doses of PET microplastics for four weeks, and their pancreases were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. Blood insulin levels and other biochemical parameters were also measured. PET microplastics altered physiological processes in the pancreas, increasing gl

Microplastics (MPs) are considered one of the main causes of male and female infertility. However, the reproductive toxicity and its related mechanisms are currently understood primarily through animal models with acute exposure to MPs. In this study, we demonstrate that low-dose exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) leads to severely abnormal reproduction in females, manifested by oocyte meiotic maturation defect. Mechanistically, PSMPs exposure induce the overactivation of cell metabolism pathways, insufficient HDACs, and H4K16 hyperacetylation in oocytes both in vivo and in vitro. W

Advanced liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), represents a major global health challenge, driven in part by the rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In parallel, micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs) have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants with potential hepatotoxic effects. This review provides an in-depth analysis of current knowledge regarding the role of MNPs in the pathogenesis of cirrhosis and HCC, particularly in the context of the growing MASLD burden, and identifies key areas for future research.

The sulfate reduction behavior in the leachate-saturated zone of landfills is significantly influenced by the type of microplastics (MPs) and temperature. This study established different temperature conditions based on the leachate-saturated zone of landfills to investigate the sulfate reduction behavior influenced by different types of MPs at different temperatures. The results showed that H2S release was more intense under the influence of polylactic acid (PLA). Additionally, the cumulative H2S release increased with rising temperature. In the PLA group, the cumulative H2S release at 55 °C

The microplastics polymer-polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, etc. are now recognized as potent threats to the aquatic system due to the Trojan horse effect i.e., they adsorb other pollutants such as pharmaceutical drugs, organic solvents, metals etc. and act as a vector or carrier. Polystyrene (PS) is one of the most usable plastics worldwide that abundantly contaminates the aquatic body. However, to date, only a few studies have focused on the eco-toxic effects of polystyrene in combination with other pollutants. Therefore, in the present study, the effect of polystyrene (pristine

Polystyrene microplastics (PMs) are pervasive aquatic contaminants, yet the molecular mechanisms driving their ecotoxicity, particularly intestinal inflammation, remain poorly elucidated. Here, we investigated the effects of environmentally relevant PMs concentrations (1.0 μm; 0, 25, and 250 μg/L) in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Multi-organ screening identified the intestine as the primary site of inflammation, where PMs were confirmed to accumulate. Exposure of 4 weeks induced significant histopathological damage (2.2-2.7-fold increase in histological scores) and elevated key pro-inflammatory cyt

Microplastics (MPs) can enter the body via plastic products. Given modern plastic exposure, we seek to assess MP exposure in large populations through epidemiological tools. In this quasi-experimental study, every participant filled out a questionnaire, and those who satisfied any of the following requirements were not allowed to continue in the study: Diabetes, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, infectious diseases. Participants in the exposure and control groups were provided three hot meals in disposable plastic tableware (DPT) (n = 30) or non-DPT (n = 30), respectively. After a month of

Microplastic contamination of terrestrial and aquatic environment has gained immense research attention due to their potential ecotoxicity and biomagnification property when enterer into food chain. Heterogenous nature of microplastics coupled with their ability to combine with other emerging pollutants have increased the severity of this crisis. Existing detection methods often fails to accurately quantify the amount of microplastic components present in environmental and biological samples. Thus, a great deal of research gap always exists in our current understanding about microplastics incl

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is an emerging environmental health concern, impacting soil, plants, animals, and humans through their entry into the food chain via bioaccumulation. Human activities such as improper solid waste dumping are significant sources that ultimately transport MPs into the water bodies of the coastal areas. Moreover, there is a complex interplay between the coastal climate dynamics, environmental factors, the burgeoning issue of MPs pollution and the complex web of coastal pollution. We embark on a comprehensive journey, synthesizing the latest research across multiple d

In recent years, everyone has recognized microplastics as an emerging contaminant in aquatic ecosystems. Polypropylene is one of the dominant pollutants. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exposing zebrafish (Danio rerio) to water with various concentrations of polypropylene microplastics (11.86 ± 44.62 μm), including control (0 mg/L), group 1 (1 mg/L), group 2 (10 mg/L), and group 3 (100 mg/L) for up to 28 days (chronic exposure). The bioaccumulation of microplastics in the tract was noted after 28 days. From the experimental groups, blood and detoxifying organs of the li

High concentrations of microplastics (MPs) have been documented in the deep-sea surface sediments of the Arctic Ocean. However, studies investigating their high-resolution vertical distribution in sediments from the European waters to the Arctic remain limited. This study examines MPs in five sediment cores from the Norwegian Coastal Current (NCC), encompassing the water-sediment interface and sediment layers up to 19 cm depth. Advanced analytical methods for MP identification down to 11 μm in size were combined with radiometric dating and lithology observations. MPs were present across all se

Polypropylene based medical devices significantly increased production and usage in COVID-19 pandemic states, and this material is very resilient in the environment. Thus, more than ever, rapid action is needed to reduce this pollution. This study focuses on the degradation of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) by unique marine bacterial strains obtained from the Thoundi (Bacillus tropicus, Bacillus cereus, Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila, and Brucella pseudintermedia) and Rameshwaram coasts (Bacillus cereus). Those above five bacterial strains were chosen after preliminary screening of thei

Microplastics (MPs) might accumulate and transport antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in aquatic systems. We determined the abundance and diversity of culturable ciprofloxacin- and cefotaxime-resistant bacteria in biofilms covering MPs placed in river water, and characterized priority pathogens from these biofilms. Our results showed that the abundance of ARB colonizing MPs tends to be higher compared to sand particles. Also, higher numbers were cultivated from a mixture of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), compared to PP and PET alone. Aeromonas and

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the predominant cause of chronic liver injury; however, the mechanisms underlying its progression have not been fully elucidated. Pathophysiological studies have stated that NAFLD is significantly influenced by dietary and environmental factors that could participate in the development of NAFLD through different mechanisms. Currently, "plastic pollution" is one of the most challenging environmental problems worldwide since several plastics have potential toxic or endocrine disputing properties. Specifically, the intake of microplastics (M

The production, use, and waste of plastics increased worldwide, which resulted in environmental pollution and a growing public health problem. In particular, microplastics have the potential to accumulate in humans and mammals through the food chain. However, the toxicity of microplastics is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of 10-50 μm polyethylene microplastics following single- and 28-day repeated oral administration (three different doses of microplastics of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg/day) in ICR mice. For the investigation, we administered the microplastics o
