Exploring the associations of sleep bruxism and obstructive sleep apnea with migraine among patients with temporomandibular disorder: A polysomnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is the most common disabling headache disorder in the world. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of conditions characterized by pain/dysfunction of masticatory muscles or their associated structures. There is a lack of studies concerning the association between sleep disorders such as sleep bruxism (SB), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), migraine, and TMD, despite the increased prevalence of these conditions in TMD patients. OBJECTIVE: Our case-control study assesses the potential relationship among SB, OSA, and migraine using polysomnography (PSG) among the group

Migraine prevalence in visual snow with prior illicit drug use (hallucinogen persisting perception disorder) versus without.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to investigate migraine prevalence in persons with hallucinogen persisting perception disorder (HPPD) presenting as visual snow syndrome (VSS). METHODS: Persons with visual snow as a persisting symptom after illicit drug use (HPPD) were recruited via a Dutch consulting clinic for recreational drug use. A structured interview on (visual) perceptual symptomatology, details of drugs use, and medical and headache history was taken. As a control group, persons with visual snow who had never used illicit drugs prior to onset were included. The prima

Panayiotopoulos syndrome: a benign childhood autonomic epilepsy frequently imitating encephalitis, syncope, migraine, sleep disorder, or gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: Panayiotopoulos syndrome is a common idiopathic childhood-specific seizure disorder formally recognized by the International League Against Epilepsy. An expert consensus has defined Panayiotopoulos syndrome as "a benign age-related focal seizure disorder occurring in early and mid-childhood. It is characterized by seizures, often prolonged, with predominantly autonomic symptoms, and by an EEG [electroencephalogram] that shows shifting and/or multiple foci, often with occipital predominance." OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review is to provide guidance for appropriate diagnosis and

Outcome of patients with chronic migraine with medication overuse and depression after duloxetine: influence of coexisting obsessive compulsive disorder.

Patients with chronic migraine (CM) and medication overuse (MO) have high frequency of psychiatric comorbidity. Aims of this open label, prospective, independent study were: to evaluate the efficacy of duloxetine in a sample of patients with MO due to CM and with concomitant depression; to investigate, if the presence of OCD influences the outcome in this subgroup of patients. A total of 50 consecutive patients (40 F,10 M, aged 20-65 years, mean 39.4 years) from those attending our Headache Center to undergo an inpatient withdrawal programme followed by anti-migraine prophylaxis was enrolled.

Migraine and Other Headache Disorders: ACOG Clinical Updates In Women's Health Care Primary and Preventive Care Review Summary Volume XVIII, Number 4.

Migraine is a common headache disorder for which women are likely to seek care. This primary headache disorder, which often may be debilitating, has a higher prevalence in women than in men that is likely related to times of hormonal changes throughout the reproductive life cycle, such as menarche, pregnancy, postpartum period, lactation, perimenopause, and menopause, as well as to external hormonal changes associated with the use of oral contraceptives and hormone therapy. The obstetrician-gynecologist is well positioned to recognize and treat migraine and to recognize a potential relationshi

Mental disorders and the incidence of migraine headaches in a community sample: results from the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment area follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The cross-sectional relation between migraine headaches and affective disorders has been demonstrated in studies of clinical and community populations. Few studies have investigated the prospective relation between psychiatric disorders and migraine headaches. METHODS: A prospective follow-up of the Baltimore, Md, cohort of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study assessed psychopathologic features in 1981 and again between 1993 and 1996. Interviews included a history of headaches at baseline and self-reported assessment of migraine headaches at follow-up. Risk estimates for inciden

The role of mental health and substance use disorders on the relation of migraine with self-directed violence among women in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Migraine disproportionately affects women of reproductive age, and is associated with self-directed violence (SDV) which confers substantial risk for suicides. Mental health disorders (MHD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are higher among persons with migraines. However, there's limited information on the influence of these conditions on SDV among women. We evaluated the interplay of MHD and SUD on the relation of migraine with SDV among US women. METHODS: We analyzed data from 96 million hospitalizations among women aged 15-49 years from the National Inpatient Sample (2004-2015

Vestibular migraine in multicenter neurology clinics according to the appendix criteria in the third beta edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine (VM), the common term for recurrent vestibular symptoms with migraine features, has been recognized in the appendix criteria of the third beta edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3β). We applied the criteria for VM in a prospective, multicenter headache registry study. METHODS: Nine neurologists enrolled consecutive patients visiting outpatient clinics for headache. The presenting headache disorder and additional VM diagnoses were classified according to the ICHD-3β. The rates of patients diagnosed with VM and probable VM usi

Shared genetic risk and causal associations between Post-traumatic stress disorder and migraine with antithrombotic agents and other medications.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that frequently co-occurs with pain disorders including migraine. There are proposed biological, genetic and environmental factors associated with both PTSD and migraine suggesting shared etiology. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have been used to identify genomic risk loci associated with various disorders and to investigate genetic overlap between traits. There is a significant genetic correlation between PTSD and migraine with no evidence of a causal relationship that could be attributed to pleiotropy. Cross-disorder gen

Cannabis use disorder increases risk of large-artery atherosclerotic stroke and migraine with aura through mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have shown some association between cannabis use disorder (CUD) and neurological disorders, but their causal relationship is unclear. In this study, we tested the potential causal relationship between CUD and three common neurological disorders using two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) and multivariate MR (MVMR) methods. Thirty-two genetic loci were extracted as exposure factors from the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for CUD to date. TSMR results showed that genetic prediction of CUD with all stroke, ischemic stroke, large-artery at

Can personality traits, obesity, depression, anxiety, and quality of life explain the association between migraine and disordered eating attitudes?

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the coexistence of migraine and disordered eating attitudes. Furthermore, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of migraine and disordered eating attitude comorbidity are not clearly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between migraine and disordered eating attitudes in relation to personality traits, obesity, quality of life, migraine severity, depression, and anxiety. METHODS: This study included 91 patients with episodic migraine and 84 healthy control subjects. Self-report questionnaires were used to evaluate

Cognitive behavior therapy for comorbid migraine and/or tension-type headache and major depressive disorder: An exploratory randomized controlled trial.

Numerous studies have demonstrated comorbidity between migraine and tension-type headache on the one hand, and depression on the other. Presence of depression is a negative prognostic indicator for behavioral treatment of headaches. Despite the recognised comorbidity, there is a limited research literature evaluating interventions designed for comorbid headaches and depression. Sixty six participants (49 female, 17 male) suffering from migraine and/or tension-type headache and major depressive disorder were randomly allocated to a Routine Primary Care control group or a Cognitive Behavior Ther
