Minority stress and stimulant use among US adult sexual minority men: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Minority stress theory posits health disparities among sexual minority men (SMM; i.e., non-heterosexual) result from experiences of sexual minority stigma (SMS). This systematic review synthesizes quantitative findings on the association between minority stress and stimulant use among US adult SMM. METHODS: PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Scopus searches between November 2022 and October 2023 identified 991 studies, with 13 meeting selection criteria: English, peer-reviewed publication reporting an estimated minority stressor-stimulant use association among US adult SMM. Transfusion Support of Minority Patients: Extended Antigen Donor Typing and Recruitment of Minority Blood Donors.

One of the most important and persistent complications of blood transfusion is red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization. When a patient is exposed to RBC antigens that differ from their own they can form alloantibodies to these foreign antigens. Blood group antigens are highly conserved and follow ancestral patterns of inheritance that may demonstrate population restriction. Minority populations who require chronic transfusion are at particularly high risk of alloimmunization when the blood donor population does not share the same ancestral background, resulting in exposure to non-self RBC antige

Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland. An unusual glossal presentation of a minor salivary gland tumor.

A case of an unusual oncocytic variant of minor salivary gland adenocarcinoma presenting in the base of the tongue in a 79 year old male with a remote history of regional radiotherapy is presented. The tumor had a striking morphologic similarity to the more common granular cell tumor, with which it could have been easily confused, leading to significant misdiagnosis. The light microscopic, cytologic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic features are presented, with a discussion of the differentiating features of this lesion compared to other more common benign and malignant glossal tum

Minority stressors and tobacco use among a US sample of sexual and gender minority young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Young adults who are sexual and gender minorities (SGM) are at the highest risk for tobacco initiation in young adulthood. Minority stress theory suggests that sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI)-based discrimination may contribute to nicotine and tobacco use disparities. Our study aimed to quantify the association between SOGI-based distal minority stressors and current tobacco use among SGM young adults living in the United States (US). METHODS: Eligible participants-including young adults (aged 18-35 years old), who identified as SGM, and were currently residing in

Navigating sexual minority identity in sport: a qualitative exploration of sexual minority student-athletes in China.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority student-athletes (SMSAs) face discrimination and identity conflicts in intercollegiate sport, impacting their participation and mental health. This study explores the perceptions of Chinese SMSAs regarding their sexual minority identities, aiming to fill the current gap in research related to non-Western countries. METHODS: A qualitative methodology was adopted, utilising the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach with self-categorization theory as the theoretical framework. Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling, and dat

Investigating the Associations of Sexual Minority Stressors and Incident Hypertension in a Community Sample of Sexual Minority Adults.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adults are at higher risk of hypertension than their heterosexual counterparts. Sexual minority stressors (i.e., unique stressors attributed to sexual minority identity) are associated with a variety of poor mental and physical health outcomes. Previous research has not tested associations between sexual minority stressors and incident hypertension among sexual minority adults. PURPOSE: To examine the associations between sexual minority stressors and incident hypertension among sexual minority adults assigned female sex at birth. METHODS: Using data from a longit

Sexual Minority Stress and Cellular Aging in Methamphetamine-Using Sexual Minority Men With Treated HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority men (e.g., gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men) experience stigma and sexual minority stress, which are theorized to drive negative health outcomes. Sexual minority men with treated HIV display persistent immune dysregulation, which could be amplified by sexual minority stress responses to potentiate cellular aging. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 52 sexual minority men living with HIV who had undetectable viral load (<40 copies/mL) and biologically confirmed recent methamphetamine use. Participants completed measures assessing sexual min

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Unaccompanied Refugee Minors: Prevalence, Contributing and Protective Factors, and Effective Interventions: A Scoping Review.

In 2021, there were close to 37 million children displaced worldwide. There were 13.7 million refugees and an additional 22.8 million internally displaced. In Europe, this included 23,255 unaccompanied minors seeking asylum, up 72% compared with 2020 (13,550). The objective was to review the current literature regarding PTSD in unaccompanied refugee minors (URM). The authors searched Ovid Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library from 1 January 2008 through 15 January 2019. Thirty full texts were chosen that specifically studied unaccompanied refugee minors (URM). The results showed that URM had a

Obstacles and facilitators faced by people attracted to minors when seeking support for their paraphilic interest - a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Although awareness of the mental health needs of minor-attracted persons (MAPs) is growing, barriers continue to limit their access to care, and evidence on what influences their help-seeking behavior remains limited. Addressing this gap calls for public health strategies that enhance the prevention of child sexual abuse through healthcare provision for MAPs. This review aims to map the barriers and facilitators to help-seeking in this population to inform policies that improve healthcare access. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analys

Multivariate Analysis of the Predicted Probability of Smoking Behavior of Foster Care Minors: Results of a Study from Romania.

BACKGROUND: There are a multitude of factors that influence smoking status, and minors from the social protection system are a vulnerable category in terms of smoking. METHODS: The objective of this research was to assess the degree of smoking dependence and to identify potential predictors of smoking status in foster care teenagers. Smoker status was confirmed by dosing CO in the exhaled air, and the degree of dependence was assessed using the Fagerström score. We performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: From the 275 foster care minors, 22.5% were current smokers. Exh

Minors at risk of von Hippel-Lindau disease: 10 years' experience of predictive genetic testing and follow-up adherence.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is one of the most common cancer predisposition syndromes. Penetrance is high with around 20% of children presenting detectable and curable manifestations of the disease at 15 years old. VHL predictive genetic testing (PGT) is recommended during childhood from age 5 years in France. Insufficient compliance to surveillance of VHL pathogenic variant (PV) carriers is associated with severe outcome. PGT experienced by children and their parents is probably critical in influencing future acceptance of the result and adherence to surveillance. We conducted a retrospec

Comparing psychological distress, traumatic stress reactions, and experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors with experiences of adolescents accompanied by parents.

The objective of this study is to make comparisons of the severity of the psychological distress, behavioral problems and traumatic stress reactions, and experiences of unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) with immigrant/refugee (I/R) and Dutch (native) adolescents with parental caregivers (N = 3273). Self-report questionnaires were administered. Most assessments took place at school. URMs consistently reported significantly higher scores for internalizing problems, traumatic stress reactions, and stressful life events than all other groups. Gender appears to play an important role in the nativ

A Digital, Minority Stress-Focused Single-Session Intervention Benefits Multiply-Minoritized Sexual Minority Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Leveraging data from a previously conducted randomized trial, we examined whether Project RISE - a digital single-session intervention focused on minority stress - was associated with equal improvements in levels of internalized stigma, identity pride, hopelessness, depression, and anxiety among youth with a single minoritized or multiply-minoritized identities. We also tested whether higher levels of social support moderated outcomes. METHOD: Participants randomly assigned to the intervention were included (n = 261 adolescents 13-16 years old; M age = 15; 51% youth of color; 68% t

Trauma Symptoms, Minority Stress, and Substance Use: Implications for Trauma Treatment in Sexual and Gender Minority Communities.

Posttraumatic stress symptoms are very high among sexual and/or gender minority (SGM) people. Development and testing of trauma interventions with SGM people is needed, but first we need to understand who among SGM people are at greatest risk of posttraumatic stress symptoms, how minority stress may contribute, and the frequency of substance use comorbidity with significant posttraumatic stress symptoms among SGM people. General linear models and logistic regressions were used to examine demographic differences, minority stress, and substance use related to posttraumatic stress symptoms among
