Reproduction of parasitic mites Varroa destructor in original and new honeybee hosts.

The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor, shifted host from the eastern honeybee, Apis cerana, to the western honeybee, Apis mellifera. Whereas the original host survives infestations by this parasite, they are lethal to colonies of its new host. Here, we investigated a population of A. cerana naturally infested by the V. destructor Korea haplotype that gave rise to the globally invasive mite lineage. Our aim was to better characterize traits that allow for the survival of the original host to infestations by this particular mite haplotype. A known major trait of resistance is the lack of mit

Chigger mites of the genus Ericotrombidium (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) attacking pets in Europe.

Diversity of chigger mites causing trombiculiasis of domestic animals and humans in Europe is greatly underestimated. A number of reports on the attacks of "harvest mite" (Neotrombicula autumnalis) could be based on misidentified chiggers from other species and genera. In this study descriptions of two cases of trombiculiasis are presented, which constitute the first report on the pets' parasitism by the chigger genus Ericotrombidium in Europe. The species Ericotrombidium ibericense is for the first time reported in Portugal as a causative agent of the trombiculiasis entailed extensive alopeci

Ectoparasitic chigger mites on large oriental vole (Eothenomys miletus) across southwest, China.

An investigation of chigger mites on the large oriental vole, Eothenomys miletus (Rodentia: Cricetidae), was conducted between 2001 and 2013 at 39 localities across southwest China, and 2463 individuals of the vole hosts were captured and examined, which is a big host sample size. From the body surface of E. miletus, 49,850 individuals of chigger mites were collected, and they were identified as comprising 175 species, 13 genera, and 3 subfamilies in 2 families (Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhoekiidae). The 175 species of chigger mites from such a single rodent species (E. miletus) within a certain

Morphologic and Genotypic Characterization of Psoroptes Mites from Water Buffaloes in Egypt.

Species delimitation of Psoroptes spp. and identity of the parasite in water buffaloes remain poorly defined. In this study, Psoroptes infestation on three water buffalo farms in Egypt was examined based on morphometric characteristics, especially the opisthosomal setae of adult male mites. Clinical investigations showed that 28% (196/700) of the sampled animals had mange infestation. Microscopic examinations of 80 skin scrapings indicated the occurrence of Psoroptes mites in 17 (21.3%) samples, Sarcoptes mites in 27 (33.7%) samples, and the concurrence of both in 36 (45.0%) samples. Demodex mites as potential etiological factor in chalazion - a study in Poland.

The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of Demodex in the hair follicles of eyelashes and their potential participation in the aetiology of chalazion in patients in Poland. The study of the correlation between the presence of Demodex spp. and chalazion has never been performed in patients in Europe. There is, therefore, a justified necessity to check whether Demodex mites can be a potential risk factor in the development of chalazion in the European population. The samples were examined by light microscope, using standard parasitological methods. A positive result was assumed in t

Parasitic scabies mites and associated bacteria joining forces against host complement defence.

Scabies is a ubiquitous and contagious skin disease caused by the parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei Epidemiological studies have identified scabies as a causative agent for secondary skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This is an important notion, as such bacterial infections can lead to serious downstream life-threatening complications. As the complement system is the first line of host defence that confronts invading pathogens, both the mite and bacteria produce a large array of molecules that inhibit the complement cascades. It is hypothesised that sca

House dust mites on skin, clothes, and bedding of atopic dermatitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is a common allergic condition in children, often associated with a positive skin reaction to house dust mite allergens. AIM: To determine the presence of house dust mites on the skin, clothes, and bedding of patients with atopic dermatitis. METHODS: Nineteen patients with atopic dermatitis were examined during a 2-year period. Samples from affected and healthy skin surfaces were obtained with adhesive tape, and dust samples from bedding and clothes were collected with a vacuum cleaner at the start of the study and 3-6 weeks later, and examined for the presence

Atopy patch test reactions to house dust mites in patients with scabies.

It is well known that the house dust and the scabies mites are related phylogenetically. We therefore performed atopy patch tests with house dust mite antigens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) and/or Dermatophagoides farinae (Df)) in scabies patients without atopy and healthy controls. We studied 25 men with active scabies and 25 healthy controls. Skin prick tests with standardized house dust mite extract were performed for all patients and controls. An intradermal test procedure was carried out in skin prick test-negative patients, and for controls showing positive atopy patch test to Dp

Detection of Bartonella species from ticks, mites and small mammals in Korea.

We investigated the prevalence of Bartonella infections in ticks, mites and small mammals (rodents, insectivores and weasels) collected during 2001 through 2004, from various military installations and training sites in Korea, using PCR and sequence analysis of 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA and groEL heat shock protein genes. The prevalence of Bartonella spp. was 5.2% (n = 1,305 sample pools) in ticks, 19.1% (n = 21) in mesostigmatid mites and 13.7% (n = 424 individuals) in small mammals. The prevalence within the family Ixodidae was, 4.4% (n = 1,173) in Haemaphysalis longicornis (scrub tick), 2.7% (n =

Resistance and immune response in scabies-infested hosts immunized with Dermatophagoides mites.

Seventy-one percent of rabbits immunized with a mixed (50:50) Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus house dust mite extract were resistant to infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. The resistance was evidenced by a marked reduction in parasite load. All immunized hosts developed similar immunogen-specific antibody titers that were independent of the levels of scabies infestation that developed when the hosts were infested with scabies. Resistant hosts exhibited significantly lower scabies-specific immunoglobulin titers and produced antibody to fewer scabies antigens than did nonr

Increased immune reactivity to house dust mites in adults with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Sixty-three adults with symptomatic chronic rhinosinusitis had computerized tomographic (CT) scans of the paranasal sinuses, which were used to quantify disease severity. These patients were divided into three closely age- and sex-matched groups: a CT scan-negative group (chronic rhinitis only), a mild sinusitis group and a severe sinusitis group. Serum dust mite-specific IgG levels were found to be significantly elevated in the sinusitis patients compared with a matched group of asymptomatic normal individuals. Levels were highest in the more severe sinusitis group, in which the mean titre wa

Skin cross-reactivity between Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and storage mites in atopic children.

In our environment, some children with allergic respiratory pathology do not have as favorable an evolution as expected after three years of immunotherapy with D. pteronyssinus extracts. We believe this is due to the existence of other mites whose antigenic determinants are not present in D. pteronyssinus. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate skin cross-reactivity between Dermatophagoides and storage mites in children with bronchial asthma. Fifty patients were chosen, with a mean age of 7.78 +/- 2.98 years and a range of 3-14 years. There were 38 boys (76%) and 12 girls (24%) with

Different cadaver astigmatan mites (Arthropoda: Acari) are designed to bite flesh differently.

How dead bodies decay is useful forensically. Necrophagous astigmatan mites (Acari: Sarcoptiformes) commonly attacking cadavers change from protein-seeking Type 1 surface feeding omnivores to interstitial Type 2 fragmentary feeding obligate fungivore / microbiovores as human body decomposition progresses after death. An analytical occlusive method shows that at each forensic decay stage the chelae of the astigmatans are designed to bite foodstuff differently. Fixed chelal digits are more ‘toothy’ than moveable digits in such sarcoptiform mites. Variation in fixed digit design is all about the

Positive and relaxed selection on mitochondrial DNA in parasitic versus predatory mites.

Mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA) have distinct evolutionary trajectories owing to their inheritance, ploidy and underlying mutation rates, making them prone to accumulate slightly deleterious mutations. Positive selection on mtDNA has been suggested to be important during adaptation to 'high-energy' lifestyles and environments. Disentangling positive versus relaxed selection in molecular mtDNA evolution studies is therefore important, although common metrics such as elevated dN/dS ratios (the ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous substitution rates) can be interpreted as signs of both relaxed pur

Knowledge, Attitude, Awareness, and Practice Regarding Demodex Mites Among the Thai Population.

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are common ectoparasites in humans and can cause various skin disorders known as demodicosis, ranging from nonspecific facial dermatitis to conditions resembling eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, and acne. Overgrowth of these mites can lead to pityriasis folliculorum, perioral dermatitis, blepharitis, and rosacea, significantly impacting skin health. This study aims to investigate the knowledge, attitude, awareness, and practice regarding Demodex mites in the Thai population and analyze the influencing factors associated with these aspects. METHODS: This s

The bacterial microbiome and resistome of house dust mites in Irish homes.

Dust samples were collected from Irish homes. House Dust Mite and storage mites were separated from the dust. The microbiome and resistome of mites and originating dust were assessed using a culture-independent approach. The bacterial microbiome of mites and dust were predominantly populated by Staphylococci. There was a highly significant (P = 0.005; Spearman's rank test) correlation between the bacterial microbiome of mites and the dust. One-hundred and eighteen antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) were associated with mites and 176 with dust. Both contained ARGs encoding resistance for mul
