Simulating human foot mechanics during walking based on an anatomically detailed forward dynamic finite element model.

PURPOSE: Forward dynamic musculoskeletal simulation is a powerful computational approach for investigating the biomechanics of human locomotion. However, existing models often oversimplify foot anatomy, thereby limiting our understanding of the role of detailed foot morphology in gait mechanics. In this study, we developed an anatomically accurate three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the human foot to simulate its dynamic behavior during the stance phase of walking using an explicit forward dynamics approach. METHODS: The model incorporated detailed representations of bones, soft ti

Virtual intraoperative CT (viCT): sequential anatomic updates for modeling tissue resection throughout endoscopic sinus surgery.

PURPOSE: Incomplete dissection is a common cause of persistent disease and revision endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in chronic rhinosinusitis. Current image-guided surgery systems typically reference static preoperative CT (pCT) and do not model evolving resection boundaries. We present Virtual Intraoperative CT (viCT), a method for sequentially updating pCT throughout ESS using intraoperative 3D reconstructions from monocular endoscopic video to enable visualization of evolving anatomy in CT format. METHODS: Monocular endoscopic video is processed using a depth-supervised NeRF framework with

Exploring the association between coronary vascular anatomical features and future myocardial infarction through statistical shape modelling.

Considering the intricate interplay among coronary anatomy and hemodynamics in coronary artery disease (CAD), anatomy-based descriptors have been employed as surrogates of local aberrant hemodynamics and, ultimately, as clinical markers for diagnostic and predictive purposes. However, anatomical descriptors have demonstrated unsatisfactory accuracy, making their further investigation cogent in CAD applications. Therefore, this study investigates the presence of unexplored pathological shape features of left anterior descending (LAD) coronary arteries associated with myocardial infarction (MI)

Deep Learning Models for Evaluating the Anatomical Relationship Between Posterior Maxillary Teeth and Maxillary Sinus in Panoramic Radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate evaluation of the anatomical relationship between posterior maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus is critical in dental treatments such as orthodontics, surgery, and implantology. This study investigates the efficacy of deep learning models applied to panoramic images for predicting this anatomical relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 300 panoramic images and 1760 cropped slices were collected and converted to PNG format at a resolution of 512 × 512 pixels. Three convolutional neural network architectures-VGG, ResNet, and ResNeXt-were trained and evaluated. T

Thoracoscopic non-anatomical lung segmentectomy for intralobar pulmonary sequestration using a 3-dimensional model and indocyanine green.

Pulmonary sequestrations comprise a spectrum of congenital lung malformations, with abnormal lung tissue lacking connection with the tracheobronchial tree, supplied by an aberrant systemic artery. Until a few years ago, lobectomy was considered the standard treatment for intralobar pulmonary sequestration. However, minimally invasive sublobar resection gained a place as an interesting alternative therapeutic approach, guided by indocyanine green and computed tomography-based 3-dimensional anatomical models. Like pulmonary sequestrations,  pulmonary pseudosequestrations are a congenital lung ma

Finite element modeling to predict the influence of anatomic variation and implant placement on performance of biological intervertebral disc implants.

BACKGROUND: Tissue-engineered intervertebral disc (TE-IVD) constructs are an attractive therapy for treating degenerative disc disease and have previously been investigated in vivo in both large and small animal models. The mechanical environment of the spine is notably challenging, in part due to its complex anatomy, and implants may require additional mechanical support to avoid failure in the early stages of implantation. As such, the design of suitable support implants requires rigorous validation. METHODS: We created a FE model to simulate the behavior of the IVD cages under compression

Patient-specific 3D-printed shelf implant for the treatment of hip dysplasia: Anatomical and biomechanical outcomes in a canine model.

A solution for challenging hip dysplasia surgery could be a patient-specific 3D-printed shelf implant that is positioned extra-articular and restores the dysplastic acetabular rim to normal anatomical dimensions. The anatomical correction and biomechanical stability of this concept were tested in a canine model that, like humans, also suffers from hip dysplasia. Using 3D reconstructed computed tomography images the 3D shelf implant was designed to restore the radiological dysplastic hip parameters to healthy parameters. It was tested ex vivo on three dog cadavers (six hips) with hip dysplasia.

Lower Leg Injury Mechanism Investigation During an IED Blast Under a Vehicle Using an Anatomic Leg Model.

Attacks with improvised explosive device (IED) constituted the main threat to, for example, Polish soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Improving safety during transport in an armored vehicle has become an important issue. The main purpose of the presented research is to investigate the mechanism of lower leg injuries during explosion under an armored vehicle. Using a numerical anatomic model of the lower leg, the analysis of the leg position was carried out. In all presented positions, the stress limit of 160 (MPa) was reached, which indicates bone damage. There is a difference in stress distrib

Complicated Postoperative Flat Back Deformity Correction With the Aid of Virtual and 3D Printed Anatomical Models: Case Report.

Introduction: The number of patients with iatrogenic spinal deformities is increasing due to the increase in instrumented spinal surgeries globally. Correcting a deformity could be challenging due to the complex anatomical and geometrical irregularities caused by previous surgeries and spine degeneration. Virtual and 3D printed models have the potential to illuminate the unique and complex anatomical-geometrical problems found in these patients. Case Presentation: We present a case report with 6-months follow-up (FU) of a 71 year old female patient with severe sagittal and coronal malalignment

Dual-sectored transurethral ultrasound for thermal treatment of stress urinary incontinence: in silico studies in 3D anatomical models.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility and performance of a stationary, non-focused dual-sectored tubular transurethral ultrasound applicator for thermal exposure of tissue regions adjacent to the urethra for treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) through acoustic and biothermal simulations on 3D anatomical models. Parametric studies in a generalized tissue model over dual-sectored ultrasound applicator configurations (acoustic surface intensities, lateral active acoustic output sector angles, and durations) were performed. Selected configurations and delivery stra

Simple 2-dimensional anatomic model to predict the risk of coronary obstruction during transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, a 2-dimensional (2D) index relying on preprocedural computed tomography (CT) data was developed to evaluate the risk of coronary obstruction during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures. METHODS: Anatomic measurements from pre-TAVR CT scans were collected in 28 patients among 600 who were flagged as high risk (defined as meeting coronary artery height, h, <14 mm and/or sinus of Valsalva diameter, SOVd, <30 mm) for coronary obstruction. A geometric model derived from these anatomic measurements was used to predict the post-TAVR native cusp appositio

A functional neuro-anatomical model of human attachment (NAMA): Insights from first- and second-person social neuroscience.

Attachment theory, developed by Mary Ainsworth and John Bowlby about seventy years ago, has become one of the most influential and comprehensive contemporary psychology theories. It predicts that early social interactions with significant others shape the emergence of distinct self- and other-representations, the latter affecting how we initiate and maintain social relationships across the lifespan. A person's attachment history will therefore associate with inter-individual differences in emotional and cognitive mechanisms sustaining representations, modeling, and understanding of others on t

Development of an Anatomical Silicone Model for Simulation-based Medical Training of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury Repair in Bangladesh.

Advancing global healthcare in developing countries has traditionally been an area of interest for many North American medical organizations, as they strive to improve patient outcomes by helping to control disease and death-related illnesses. Women's healthcare in developing countries, in particular, presents a unique set of complexities, revealing high maternal mortality statistics surrounding pregnancy, labor, and childbirth, which is often tied to home births without medically trained attendants. In September 2018, Team Broken Earth, a Canadian-based outreach initiative, hosted a three-day

Anatomical risk models for paravalvular leak and landing zone complications for balloon-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Though several anatomical characteristics have been reported separately as risk factors for paravalvular leak (PVL) and landing zone (LZ) complications after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), multivariate risk models are needed. METHODS: Patients that underwent balloon-expandable TAVR with multidetector cardiac computed tomography (MDCT) sizing were studied. MDCT images were analyzed and the association between anatomical factors and ≥mild PVL, ≥moderate PVL, and LZ complications (annular rupture, requirement of new permanent pacemaker, and coronary obstruction) was d

Anatomically Inspired Three-dimensional Micro-tissue Engineered Neural Networks for Nervous System Reconstruction, Modulation, and Modeling.

Functional recovery rarely occurs following injury or disease-induced degeneration within the central nervous system (CNS) due to the inhibitory environment and the limited capacity for neurogenesis. We are developing a strategy to simultaneously address neuronal and axonal pathway loss within the damaged CNS. This manuscript presents the fabrication protocol for micro-tissue engineered neural networks (micro-TENNs), implantable constructs consisting of neurons and aligned axonal tracts spanning the extracellular matrix (ECM) lumen of a preformed hydrogel cylinder hundreds of microns in diamet

Intranasal Deposition of Accuspray™ Aerosol in Anatomically Correct Models of 2-, 5-, and 12-Year-Old Children.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, quantification of intranasal deposition of aerosol generated by Accuspray(™) (AS) in children has never been published. We hypothesized that deposition would vary significantly with age and with placement of the device within, or outside, of the nostril. METHODS: We tested these hypotheses in anatomically-correct physical models based on CT scans of 2-, 5-, and 12-year-old children with normal, intranasal airways. Models included a removable anterior nose (AN) with exterior facial features and interior nasal vestibule and nasal valve area and a main nasal airway
