803 schoolchildren in the subprovince of Amran were examined for S. haematobium. The prevalence was 28.9%. Stool samples of 92 children were negative for S. mansoni eggs. Bulinus snails were most frequent, whereas Biomphalaria were rare. Control measures included chemotherapy and mollusciciding. The prevalence in 8 selected villages could be reduced by this from 36.3% down to 5.1%. No gross haematuria and only one single case of heavy infection were detected. Eradication of this disease seems feasible.

Being a zoonotic parasitic disease, schistosomiasis was widely spread in 12 provinces of Southern China in the 1950s, severly harming human health and hindering economic development. The National Institute of Parasitic Diseases at the Chinese Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, and Chinese Center for Tropical Diseases Research (NIPD-CTDR), as the only professional institution focussing on parasitic diseases at the national level, has played an important role in schistosomiasis control in the country. In this article, we look back at the changes of schistosomiasis endemicity and the con

A paper published in 1990 by Webbe and El Hag described the progress being made in the control of schistosomiasis with the introduction of a new medicine 'Praziquantel' to treat infected individuals, and the use of a molluscicide 'niclosamide', with which to kill the intermediate host snails. Almost 30 years from the date of publication, the situation in Egypt and indeed globally has changed out of all recognition. Almost every country in Africa has a school health programme to deworm children, each country has a national plan which includes school health, and praziquantel is now donated throu

Schistosomiasis is a serious worldwide parasitic disease. One of the best ways to control schistosomiasis is to control the population of Oncomelania hupensis snails. We sought to identify a high-efficiency biogenic molluscicide against Oncomelania with low toxicity, to avoid chemical molluscicide contamination and toxicity in aquatic organisms. We extracted quaternary benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids (QBAs) from Macleaya cordata fruits. Molluscicidal activity of the QBAs against Oncomelania was determined using bioassay. Our results showed that the extracted QBAs had a strong molluscicidal ef

Stimulated largely by the availability of new technology, biomedical research at the molecular-level and chemical-based control approaches arguably dominate the field of infectious diseases. Along with this, the proximate view of disease etiology predominates to the exclusion of the ultimate, evolutionary biology-based, causation perspective. Yet, historically and up to today, research in evolutionary biology has provided much of the foundation for understanding the mechanisms underlying disease transmission dynamics, virulence, and the design of effective integrated control strategies. Here w

Schistosomiasis is considered the second most pre-valiant worldwide parasitic disease ranked next to malaria. It has significant economic and public health consequences in many developing countries. Several ways have been practiced in order to bring the disease under an adequate control through the breakage of the life cycle of the parasite. Snail control could be regarded as a rapid and efficient of reducing or eliminating transmission and remains among the methods of choice for schistosomiasis control. The aim of this work is to evaluate the role of Haplophyllum tuberculatum (family Rutaceae

BACKGROUND: In the continued search for molluscicidal compounds from plants, crude aqueous and ethanolic extracts from different parts of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. 1832, were evaluated against egg masses and adults of Biomphalaria pfeifferi (Krauss, 1848), the snail intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon, 1907) in Nigeria.
METHODS: Laboratory-bred adult B. pfeifferi and their viable 0-24 h old egg masses were separately exposed to five different concentrations (7.81-2000 mg l(-1)) each, of the crude aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the fruits, leaves, roots and stem bark of D. sissoo,

Psticides; fenitrothion and anilofos (aniloguard) were testd as molluscicides against Lymnaea natalensis and Biomplhalaria alexandrina. The LC10 & LC90 of fenitrothion was 0.12 & 0.21 ppm for L. nalalensis and 0.17 & .26 ppm for B. alexandrina, respectively. The LC50 & LC90 anilofos was 2.61 & 6.47 ppm for Lymnaea and 3.07 & 8.6 ppm for Biomphalaria. The effect of sublethal concentrations (LC0, LC5 & C10) of Feni-rothion on B. alexandrina growth rate, eggs hatchability and on free larval stages of Schistosonma mansoni (miracidia & cerca-riae) were studied. The results obtained showed that subl

A detailed knowledge of distribution patterns of schistosome intermediate hosts and their population dynamics and factors affecting these patterns will provide useful information about the possibilities and desirability of conducting snail control measures in various transmission situations. On the basis of various case studies the association between the occurrence of human water contacts and the presence of schistosome intermediate hosts or infections in the intermediate hosts is illustrated. Other parameters affecting snail distribution patterns and density fluctuations are discussed. It is

In the Gezira Irrigated Area of Central Sudan, transmission of Schistosoma mansoni was shown to be geographically focal, being concentrated near villages and small settlements. In a study during 1981 and 1982 of the entire area around a typical Gezira village almost 90% of the Biomphalaria pfeifferi snails carrying schistosome infections were found in one minor canal near the village. Sites near smaller settlements some distance from the minor canals yielded few infected snails. The factors which influenced the prevalence of infection in the snails were temperature, turbidity and human contact

Previous work has shown that the aerobic oxidation of certain intermediates of Krebs cycle by the snail B. alexandrina and B. truncatusis inhibited by TPT. This paper reports data on the effect of TPT on glucose utilization, glycolysis, glycogen content, and glucone ogenesis in snail tissue preparations. The compounds at its LC50 inhibited gluconeogenesis, stimulated glycolysis and markedly reduced the glycogen content and glucose utilization in both snails. However, the effects were more pronounced in B. truncatus than in B. alexandrina. Possible interpretations of these findings are discusse

Oncomelania hupensis is the only intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, highlighting the need for developing low-toxicity, efficient, and economical molluscicides to control schistosomiasis transmission and prevalence. This study screened for effective molluscicides using O. hupensis in an immersion-based biological assay. Bsp dustable powder (DP) emerged as the most effective molluscicide among seven microbial pesticide samples tested. The dominant strain, designated 3-4, was isolated and identified as Bacillus subtilis using 16S rDNA gene sequencing. Following atmospheric and room tempe

Schistosomiasis is a tropical parasitic disease that presents significant public health concerns, occurring in both acute and chronic forms. In Egypt, the freshwater snail Biomphalaria alexandrina is the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. This study evaluated the molluscicidal potential of β-sitosterol, isolated from the marine red alga Liagora farinosa, along with its methanolic extract, against B. alexandrina. Bioassay results demonstrated potent molluscicidal activity, with the methanolic extract exhibiting LC50 and LC90 values of 187.5 mg/L and 231.8 mg/L, respectively, and β-sitost

BACKGROUND: Freshwater snails are the intermediate hosts of a large variety of trematode flukes such as Schistosoma mansoni responsible for one of the most important parasitic diseases caused by helminths, affecting 67 million people worldwide. Recently, the WHO Global Vector Control Response 2017-2030 (GVCR) programme reinforced its message for safer molluscicides as part of required strategies to strengthen vector control worldwide. Here, we present the essential oil from Eryngium triquetrum as a powerful product with molluscicide and parasiticide effect against S. mansoni and the snail inte

Controlling of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails by plant molluscicides is the cornerstone in treating schistosomiasis in Egypt. The objective of this study is, to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of the aqueous leaves extract of Anagallis arvensis against B. alexandrina snails. The present results showed that this aqueous extract was lethal for B. alexandrina snails at (LC50 37.9 mg/l; LC90 48.3 mg/l), and caused reduction in survival; reproductive rates and hormonal activity (testosterone (T) and 17β-estradiol (E)) of these snails. Histopathological changes occurred in the hermaphrodite gla

In order to search new local plant molluscicides for the control of the vectors of schistosomiasis, leaves of Macleaya cordata (Willd) R. Br. were used to extract and separate alkaloid components by thinner acid method and column chromatography, and the molluscicidal effect of alkaloid components against snail Oncomelania hupensis was determined by bioassay. The results showed that 7 alkaloid components (AN1-7) were obtained after extracting and separating alkaloids from the leaves of M. cordata, where AN2 was found being the most toxic against snail O. hupensis with 48h LC50 and LC90 values o

The present study was based on assessments of the molluscicidal and antiparasitic activities of Solanum nigrum villosum. This plant has been collected in Tozeur's traditional oases (south-western Tunisia). Molluscicidal activities of leaves, ripe fruit and unripe fruit extracts of S. n. villosum have been assessed in experimental and semi-field conditions on uninfected Galba truncatula. Antiparasitic activities have also been assessed on larval stages (rediae, intraredial germinal masses and cercariae) of the parasite Fasciola hepatica infecting G. truncatula naturally. The unripe fruit extrac

The dry powder of the plant aereal part; Cupressus macro-carpa (Cupressacea) was tested against Biomphalaria alexandrina. LC50 & LC90 values were 59.5 & 98.8 ppm, respec-tively. Exposure of B. alexandrina to sublethal concentrations (LC0, LC10 & LC25) of C. macrocarpa for three weeks signi-ficantly decreased the number of circulating hemocytes. The magnitude of reduction was increased with increasing of the tested concentration. The main type of cell in the hemolymph of B. alexandrina was the granulocyte (71.8%), followed by large round cells or hyalinocytes (19.0%) and small round cells or un
