OBJECTIVE: To explore the incidence of depression in movement disorders and associated factors.
METHODS: A total of 121 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients from August 2010 to June 2011 and 62 ET patients from July 2009 to June 2010 were recruited. All of them were outpatients of our hospital. PD patients received the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) -motor examination and a modified Hoehn and Yahr scale to stage the severity of their disorders while 62 essential tremor (ET) patients were evaluated with tremor rating scale for tremor-motor examination (items 1 - 15 of rating sca

Orthodontic tooth movement is basically a biological response toward a mechanical force. The movement is induced by prolonged application of controlled mechanical forces, which create pressure and tension zones in the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, causing remodeling of tooth sockets. Orthodontists often prescribe drugs to manage pain from force application to biologic tissues. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the drugs usually prescribed. NSAIDs block prostaglandin synthesis and result in slower tooth movement. Prostaglandins have been found to play a direct role in

Iron is an essential element necessary for energy production, DNA and neurotransmitter synthesis, myelination and phospholipid metabolism. Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) involves several genetic disorders, two of which, aceruloplasminemia and neuroferritinopathy, are caused by mutations in genes directly involved in iron metabolic pathway, and others, such as pantothenate-kinase 2, phospholipase-A2 and fatty acid 2-hydroxylase associated neurodegeneration, are caused by mutations in genes coding for proteins involved in phospholipid metabolism. Phospholipids are major co

The risk of developing a movement disorder increases with age. Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD), is probably the most well known. However, essential tremor is the most common movement disorder affecting older people. Although many sufferers can have very disabling symptoms it can be a very mild illness in some. Patients present with a symmetrical tremor of the upper limbs in 95% of cases. The tremor is less evident at rest, unlike the tremor of IPD, and there will be no rigidity or bradykinesia. Essential tremor is a mainly clinical diagnosis. A watchful waiting period may be tried. DaTSCA

Psychogenic movement disorder is defined as abnormal movements unrelated to a medical cause and presumed related to underlying psychological factors. Although psychological factors are of both clinical and pathophysiological relevance, very few studies to date have systematically assessed their role in psychogenic movement disorder. We sought to assess the role of previous life stress using validated quantitative measures in patients with psychogenic movement disorder compared with age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers as well as a convenience sample of patients with focal hand dystonia. Six

Autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) can present with a large variety of noncerebellar symptoms, including movement disorders. In fact, movement disorders are frequent in many of the various SCA subtypes, and they can be the presenting, dominant, or even isolated disease feature. When combined with cerebellar ataxia, the occurrence of a specific movement disorder can provide a clue toward the underlying genotype. There are reasons to believe that for some coexisting movement disorders, the cerebellar pathology itself is the culprit, for example, in the case of cortical myoclonus a

It has been proposed that individuals with autism have difficulties understanding the goals and intentions of others because of a fundamental dysfunction in the mirror neuron system. Here, however, we show that individuals with autism exhibited not only normal fMRI responses in mirror system areas during observation and execution of hand movements but also exhibited typical movement-selective adaptation (repetition suppression) when observing or executing the same movement repeatedly. Movement selectivity is a defining characteristic of neurons involved in movement perception, including mirror

The therapeutic use of botulinum neurotoxin has exploded since the first US Food and Drug Administration indication was obtained in 1989, and today it represents the first-line therapy for several hyperkinetic movement disorders. Of the seven serotypes (A to G), types A and B have been approved for use in the United States. Two type A toxins, onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) and abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport), are available, and one type B toxin, rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc) is available. The commercially available toxins differ by protein target, duration of action, and adverse event profile; no for

AIM: To expand the understanding of stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) and its differentiation from tics and autistic stereotypies.
METHOD: Forty-two children (31 males, mean age 6y 3mo, SD 2y 8mo; 11 females, mean age 6y 7mo, SD 1y 9mo) consecutively diagnosed with SMD, without-self-injurious behavior, intellectual disability, sensory impairment, or an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), were assessed in a neuropsychiatry clinic. A list of probe questions on the nature of the stereotypy was administered to parents (and to children if developmentally ready). Questionnaires administered include

Movement disorders, especially dystonia, are a frequent manifestation of neurometabolic diseases. Proper characterization and classification of movement disorders is crucial but may be challenging in this setting. The diagnostic work-up should be focused first on treatable disease. Mixed movement disorders, marked orofacial involvement and associated neurological and extra-neurological features should prompt the clinician to consider the possibility of an underlying neurometabolic disorder. The diagnostic approach is based on the abrupt, paroxysmal or insidious nature of onset of the movement

Parkinson's disease, the most common hypokinetic movement disorder, has received much attention from the clinical and scientific community, but there has been a relative paucity of comprehensive reviews of hyperkinetic disorders, even though they are equally or even more disabling. Hyperkinetic movement disorders include tremors, dystonia, chorea, tics, myoclonus, stereotypies, restless legs syndrome, and various other disorders with abnormal involuntary movements. Substantial progress has been made in the understanding of the role of the basal ganglia in the pathophysiology of these hyperkine

BACKGROUND: Transcranial sonography (TCS) in the B-mode has the ability to image, infratentorial and supratentorial brain structures. For this reason, it has potential use in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of various intracranial pathologies.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The authors reviewed the contribution of TCS to the differentiation of a number of neurodegenerative diseases: in parkinsonian syndromes, TCS can evaluate echogenicity changes in specific structures such as the hyperechogenic area of the substantia nigra (SN) in Parkinson's disease and the hyperechogenic caudate nucleus in

Some movement disorders can be treated successfully by surgical procedures such as chronic deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, the thalamus or the globus pallidus, as well as lesioning techniques of thalamotomy and pallidotomy, radiosurgical treatment with the Gamma Knife in the thalamus or globus pallidus, and cerebral graft in Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases. The major indications of these surgical techniques are Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Huntington's disease and tremor in multiple sclerosis.

Over the past 15 years the use of transcranial B-mode sonography to assess brainstem and subcortical brain structures has become an important tool for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of various movement disorders. The most widely recognised finding for movement disorders has been an increase in echogenicity of the substantia nigra, an area of the midbrain that is affected in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). This finding has enabled the reliable diagnosis of PD with high predictive values. Other sonographic features, such as hypoechogenicity of the brainstem midline and hyperechoge

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the striatum and associated with deficits in voluntary movement in early stages. The final portion of aiming movements is particularly affected in HD and one hypothesis is that this deficit is linked to attention or terminal control requirements. Sixteen patients with early HD and 16 age-matched controls were examined in aiming movements. Four conditions manipulated movement termination requirements (discrete movements with a complete stop vs. cyclical back-and-forth movements) and the presence of flankers around the target. Re

Botulinum toxin inhibits the vesicular release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction, resulting in a transient, localized paralysis when small doses are injected. The successful use of serotypes A and B in conditions with muscle overactivity such as dystonia and spasticity has been well established. Apart from approved indications, treatment with botulinum toxin injections is attempted in a variety of new areas of neurology, including tremor, tics, and myoclonus. This article provides an update on the uses of botulinum toxin in the field of movement disorders and draws special attenti

Clinical neuropsychology's dependence upon a core scientific background in clinical neuropsychology, and clinical psychology, neurology, and neuroanatomy, as well as biopsychology, cognitive neuroscience, and cognitive science is the basis of its designation as an APA-approved clinical specialty. This dependence highlights the importance of these scientific underpinnings and the scientist-practitioner model of training, detailed in the Houston Guidelines. This presentation is meant to demonstrate that cognitive neuroscience research should influence our conception of brain behavior relationshi

Poststreptococcal disorders exhibit a remarkable comorbidity of neurologic and psychiatric features. A similar combination of symptoms is also described in other conditions, such as connective tissue or paraneoplastic disorders, albeit less frequently. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms associated with autoaggressive immune-mediated attack on the basal ganglia is required. This understanding will ideally aid clinicians in diagnosing these conditions and lead to appropriate clinical trials, for example, of chemoprophylaxis strategies to prevent recurrent streptococcal infection
