A comparative investigation on the biosorption of lead by filamentous fungal biomass.

The removal of lead from aqueous solutions by adsorption on filamentous fungal biomass was studied. Batch biosorption experiments were performed to screen a series of selected fungal strains for effective lead removal at different metal and biomass concentrations. Biosorption of the Pb2+ ions was strongly affected by pH. The fungal biomass exhibited the highest lead adsorption capacity at pH 6. Isotherms for the biosorption of lead on fungal biomass were developed and the equilibrium data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. At pH 6, the maximum lead biosorption capacity of Mucor rouxii

Cutaneous mucormycosis of the upper extremity in an immunocompetent host: case report.

Cutaneous mucormycosis, a relatively common infection in immunocompromised patients, remains rare in the immunocompetent patient outside the setting of major trauma. We report a case of an immunocompetent patient who developed left upper extremity Rhizopus infection following arterial puncture. Treatment included surgical debridement, liposomal amphotericin B, and hyperbaric oxygen wound therapy; the patient recovered fully. A review of the literature of cases of upper extremity Mucor infection is included for context. We feel that a high degree of suspicion for Mucor infection is warranted in

Cutaneous Mucormycosis in a Patient With Cirrhosis: A Case Report.

The global incidence of invasive mucormycosis (mucor) infection is on the rise due in part to an increased utilization of immunosuppressive therapies to treat malignancies and autoimmune diseases. While cirrhosis has previously been considered a risk factor for fungal infections, very little is known about the inciting factors precipitating development of isolated cutaneous mucormycosis infection. This form of mucor poses a significant mortality risk despite antifungal and surgical treatments and has been documented in only 5 patients with cirrhosis prior to our case report. This case report p

Mucormycosis with peculiar aortic involvement in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Among fungal infection, mucormycosis is a rare but severe etiology in immunocompromised patients. Lung and sinus are the usual sites; the involvement of blood vessels is also described. The diagnosis is a real challenge, because blood tests (galactomannan, beta-D-glucan) are negative and the only diagnostic tool is usually the biopsy of the affected zone. Aortitis is rare and usually caused by bacterial infection, fungal etiology is unusual and only episodic cases are reported in literature. Medical therapy alone is usually not sufficient and debilitating surgical intervention is required. We

Invasive Mucormycosis Induced Pneumopericardium: A Rare Cause of Pneumopericardium in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Mucor and Rhizopus cause life-threatening infections primarily involving the lungs and sinuses, which disseminate very rapidly by necrosis and infarction of the contiguous tissues. We present a case of a 64-year-old African American posttransplant patient who presented with a productive cough and weight loss. He had a past surgical history of renal transplant for renal cell carcinoma and was on dual immunosuppressive therapy, that is, mycophenolate and tacrolimus. During his hospital stay, he developed a pneumopericardium due to the direct extension of a lung lesion. The diagnosis was made by

Mucormycosis in a Diabetic Patient: A Case Report with an Insight into Its Pathophysiology.

Mucormycosis is one of the most rapidly progressing and fulminant forms of fungal infection which usually begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses following inhalation of fungal spores. It is caused by organisms of the subphylum Mucormycotina, including genera as Absidia, Mucor, Rhizomucor, and Rhizopus. The incidence of mucormycosis is approximately 1.7 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year. Mucormycosis affecting the maxilla is rare because of rich blood vessel supply of maxillofacial areas although more virulent fungi such as Mucor can overcome this difficulty. The common form of this in

[Abdominal wall infection due to Mucormycosis. Case report].

Zygomycosis are infections due to fungus from the Zygomycetes family, and one of them is Mucor. They are a rare opportunist species that may cause severe invasive and often fatal infections. This infection has a special predilection for diabetic patients, transplant patients and those undergoing intensive cancer therapies, as well as other patients with an immunocompromised condition. Rapid diagnosis and opportune and current treatment is the key for patient surveillance. The most frequent site of this infection is the upper respiratory tract due to spore transport by air, although there are o

Pathogenetic factors fanning the flames of COVID-19 to cause rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis: An observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Published studies on coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) associated rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (CAROCM) were primarily descriptive. Therefore, we aimed to identify features of COVID-19 that could predispose to CAROCM and explore the pathogenic pathways. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective hospital-based study was done during the first (March 2020 - January 2021) and the second (February 2021 - June 2021) waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects were grouped into four categories: first-wave CAROCM (n-4); second-wave CAROCM (n-27); first-wave non-mucor COVID (n-7

Subcutaneous mucormycosis in a non-immunocompromised patient treated with potassium iodide.

A 55-year-old teacher had had painful subcutaneous swellings on both her arms for 6 years, after receiving intramuscular multivitamin injections for generalized weakness. She did not have fever, constitutional or systemic symptoms. Cutaneous examination revealed ill-defined, subcutaneous, firm, globular, indurated, tender swellings with central softening on both the arms. There was no systemic involvement or lymphadenopathy. Aspiration cytology from one of the lesions showed inflammatory exudate with a mucor-like fungus. Skin biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation with fungal hyphae resemb

[A suspected case of orbital mucormycosis].

BACKGROUND: This is a report on a case of suspected orbital mucormycosis after hematological examination, for whom local administration of antifungal drugs was markedly effective. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old male developing phlegmon of the left orbit was seen at our clinic. Computed tomography revealed increased density of soft tissues and swollen external rectus muscle without any shadow of a tumor mass. The lesion was not responsive to the drip infusion of imipenem, or to oral administration of nonsteroid preparations, or to instillation of antibacterial drugs. Serum IgE levels were high, an

The production and partial characterization of a monoclonal IgG antibody specific for moulds belonging to the order Mucorales.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) was raised against extracellular polysaccharides from Mucor racemosus after intrasplenic immunization of mice. An indirect ELISA and a dot-blot assay were developed with this mAb. The IgG antibody was found to be very specific for all mould species tested belonging to the order of Mucorales, except species belonging to the genus Mortierella sensu stricto. No cross-reactions were observed with other moulds or yeasts. The immunoreactivity of the polysaccharides of these moulds with this mAb is based on carbohydrate epitopes, in which fucose residues probably play an i

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis--case report.

A rare case of rhinocerebral mucormycosis occurred in a 74-year-old diabetic male with gradually progressive right visual loss and total ophthalmoplegia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an invasive right orbital apex mass, destroying the medial wall of the orbit and extending into the right cavernous sinus and right middle fossa. Laboratory data demonstrated no signs of inflammation. A carcinomatous lesion originating in the paranasal sinuses and extending into the intracranial space was diagnosed. The mass was totally removed through a subfrontal approach to confir

Mucormycosis peritonitis: more than 2 years of disease-free follow-up after posaconazole salvage therapy after failure of liposomal amphotericin B.

A 57-year-old woman with end-stage kidney disease secondary to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease developed peritoneal dialysis-related Mucor peritonitis after her pet cockatoo bit through her transfer set. The infection persisted despite more than 8 weeks of treatment with liposomal amphotericin B. On a compassionate basis, she then received oral posaconazole, 800 mg/d, in divided doses for 6 months. She experienced complete remission and has remained disease free since then, for more than 2 years. We review the medical literature about mucormycosis peritonitis which, albeit rare, c

[A case of endobronchial mucormycosis with peculiar bronchoscopic findings].

Small cell lung cancer was diagnosed in a 54-year-old man in 1997. He had received 5 cycles of systemic chemotherapy and thoracic irradiation since 1997, and a favorable response had been achieved. In August 2001, pro-GRP was again elevated, and he was readmitted. Bronchoscopic findings revealed a white dendritic endobronchial mass on a cheese-like plug obstructing the left upper bronchus division. Numerous mucor hyphe and cancer cells were detected by transbronchial biopsy, and a fungal culture disclosed mucor. Although no antifungal drug was administered, the bronchial lesion disappeared aft

Pediatric pulmonary mucormycosis in a diabetic patient treated with extended pleurectomy and Clagett procedure.

Mucor is a ubiquitous fungus that is non-pathogenic in healthy people. In immunocompromised hosts, non-functional or absent neutrophils and macrophages result in fungal invasion and infection [1]. Invasive mucor (mucormycosis) most commonly involves the sinuses, brain, or lungs. Pulmonary mucormycosis typically presents in patients with a history of organ transplantation or hematologic malignancy [2], and is rare in patients with diabetes alone. The epidemiology and management of pediatric pulmonary mucormycosis is poorly described. We report an unusual occurrence of this disease, complicated

Use of external ventriculostomy and intrathecal anti-fungal treatment in cerebral mucormycotic abscess.

Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection associated with a high mortality. Cerebral mucor abscesses can result secondary to rhinocerebral or hematogenous spread. Amphotericin B, posaconazole, and aggressive surgical resection are the hallmarks of treatment. While amphotericin is typically administered intravenously, less is known about the use of intrathecal amphotericin B. We describe a 42-year-old man who developed a cerebellar mucor abscess after undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome. In the post-operative period he was admitted to t

Pulmonary mucormycosis with fatal massive hemoptysis.

A case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a 57-year-old woman with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) who died of massive hemoptysis is reported. Chest radiography revealed changes that began with a small focal infiltration and progressed to a large round nodule with cavity formation. Postmortem examination showed the nodule to be composed mainly of infarcted lung tissue with saprophytic growth of Mucor. An adjacent proximal branch of the left pulmonary artery was thrombosed with mucoraceous hyphae, and it had ruptured into the cavitary space around the necrotic tissue and then into a conducting bro
