The childhoods of multiple problem adolescents: a 15-year longitudinal study.

This paper examines the life history of a small group of adolescents (3%) who were identified during the course of a longitudinal study of a birth cohort of New Zealand children as displaying multiple problem behaviours at the age of 15 years. This group was characterised by conduct disorder, police contact, substance abuse behaviours, early onset sexual activity, suicidal ideation, mood disorders and lowered self esteem. Statistical biographies of this group of young people showed that many were the offspring of seriously disadvantaged, dysfunctional and disorganised home environments. The im

Early maternal obesity shapes offspring development through immune mechanisms: a systematized review.

In recent years, rates of maternal obesity before conception have continued to rise globally. Maternal obesity in early pregnancy may alter intrauterine immune mechanisms, impact fetal metabolic programming, and increase the risk of later-life obesity. This study aimed to review the literature on changes in immune parameters and weight-related outcomes in offspring reported in human and animal studies of maternal obesity. A systematized literature search was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science for relevant human and animal studies published between 2010 and 2025. Study screening was faci

Maternal Undernutrition before and during Pregnancy and Offspring Health and Development.

Maternal undernutrition remains a critical public health problem. There are large regional and within-country disparities in the burden of underweight, anemia, and micronutrient deficiencies across the globe. Driving these disparities are complex and multifactorial causes, including access to health services, water and sanitation, women's status, and food insecurity as well as the underlying social, economic, and political context. Women's health, nutrition, and wellbeing across the continuum of preconception to pregnancy are critical for ensuring positive pregnancy and long-term outcomes for

How low birthweight and gestational age contribute to increased inpatient costs for multiple births.

The dramatic rise in the number of multiple gestation births has led to concerns about heavy resource use by these newborns and the design of cost-effective interventions. This study uses medical records data to compare single and multiple births in terms of hospital charges by cost center, length of stay, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) days, and discharge status. Potential mediators examined were gestational age and birthweight. These factors, respectively, accounted for 50% and 40% of the increase in total charges due to multiple gestation. The remaining "direct effect" was due primaril

A regional approach to promoting improved care of multiples.

Live births of multiples in the U.S. rose 35% from 87,700 in 1988 to 118,295 in 1998. This increase presents public health issues due to the elevated health and psychosocial risks that accompany multiple birth. However, health and social service providers and educators are poorly prepared to address the specific needs of the multiple birth population. The Twin Service Network Project therefore developed regional networks of multiple birth training and resources in California to address this problem. Results indicate that these can substantially improve the care available to multiples. The proj

A population-based study of birth defects in Malaysia.

Birth defects are one of the leading causes of paediatric disability and mortality in developed and developing countries. Data on birth defects from population-based studies originating from developing countries are lacking. One of the objectives of this study was to determine the epidemiology of major birth defects in births during the perinatal period in Kinta district, Perak, Malaysia over a 14-month period, using a population-based birth defect register. There were 253 babies with major birth defects in 17,720 births, giving an incidence of 14.3/1000 births, a birth prevalence of 1 in 70.

Dietary total antioxidant capacity during pregnancy and birth outcomes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of maternal dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) and main food sources on the risk of preterm birth (PB) and offspring birth size. METHODS: Cohort study that included 733 Brazilian mother-child pairs. Two 24 h dietary recalls were obtained during pregnancy and the usual intake was estimated through the Multiple Source Method. Data of the offspring were extracted from the national live births information system. Adjusted multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the relationship that energy-adjusted DTAC and food sources have with

Maternal Chlamydia infection during pregnancy among younger mothers and risk of gastroschisis in singleton offspring.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of gastroschisis has been increasing in the United States (US) since 1980s. Genital infection with Chlamydia has also been increasing in prevalence, particularly among younger women. The etiology of gastroschisis is unknown. Ongoing research suggests multiple causal factors may be involved, including Chlamydia infection in mothers during pregnancy. METHODS: Using birth certificate data from 2014 US vital records, we conducted a population-based case-control study to examine the association between prenatal Chlamydia exposure in young women (16-25 years of age) and gastr

Effect of gestational diabetes and intrauterine growth restriction on the offspring's circulating galanin at birth.

CONTEXT: Experimental studies linked gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with altered expression of the offspring's hypothalamic galanin mRNA, possibly contributing to the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome in later life. We hypothesized that plasma galanin levels at birth would reflect presumably altered hypothalamic galanin expression and production that cannot be assessed in the human offspring. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate whether neonates born to GDM mothers or being IUGR differ from healthy ones in circulating galanin

Maternal immunoglobulins are distributed in the offspring's brain to support the maintenance of cortical interneurons in the postnatal period.

It is known that maternal immunoglobulins (Igs) are transferred to the offspring across the placenta. However, receiving maternal Igs, especially before the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is formed in the offspring's brain, carries the risk of transferring some brain-reactive Igs. It is thus hypothesized that there may be some unknown benefit to the offspring's brain that overweighs this risk. In this study, we show that the Ig detected in the embryonic/perinatal mouse brain is IgG not produced by the pups themselves, but is basically transferred from the mother across the placenta using the neonat

The Pathophysiology of Spontaneous Preterm Birth: Emerging Mechanisms Reviewed by the Preterm Birth International Collaborative.

Around 10% of global births are preterm (before 37 weeks of gestation), posing a significant challenge to maternal and neonatal health. Preterm infants face an increased risk of mortality and long-term health complications, impacting their survival and development across all life stages. Despite decades (~ 80 years) of research, effective methods to predict and prevent idiopathic or spontaneous preterm birth remain limited. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of spontaneous preterm birth is warranted. This review explores some aspects of recent progress in unravelling the

Long-term neuropsychiatric outcomes in offspring of mothers with multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: A nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) predominantly affect women of childbearing age, yet the impact of maternal disease status on long-term offspring outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (2005-2019), we conducted a nationwide cohort study. Live-born offspring of mothers diagnosed with MS or NMOSD before childbirth were identified and matched 1:4 to controls using propensity scores. Neuropsychiatric outcomes were defined using ICD-10 codes. RESULTS: Among 3,524,987 live births, 257 were

Maternal and child genetic liability for smoking and caffeine consumption and child mental health: an intergenerational genetic risk score analysis in the ALSPAC cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies suggest an association between maternal tobacco and caffeine consumption during and outside of pregnancy and offspring mental health. We aimed to separate effects of the maternal environment (intrauterine or postnatal) from pleiotropic genetic effects. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a longitudinal study. We (i) validated smoking and caffeine genetic risk scores (GRS) derived from published genome-wide association study (GWAS) for use during pregnancy, (ii) compared estimated effects of maternal and offspring GRS on childhood mental health outcomes and (iii

The immunological age prediction of monocytes indicates that gestational diabetes mellitus accelerates the aging of monocytes in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can accelerate cellular aging in multiple cell types in offspring, but its impact on immune senescence remains uncertain. Our prior study reveals GDM increased the secretion of inflammatory factors by monocytes in offspring. This study discovered the transcriptome characteristics of aging monocytes at the single-cell level and explore the impact of GDM on the progression of monocyte aging in offspring. METHOD: Single-cell sequencing data from 56 healthy individuals (aged 0-100 years), comprising self-measured s

Maternal oxytocin treatment at birth increases epigenetic age in male offspring.

Exogenous oxytocin (OT) is widely used to induce or augment labor with little understanding of the impact on offspring development. In rodent models, including the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), it has been shown that oxytocin administered to mothers can affect the nervous system of the offspring with long lasting behavioral effects especially on sociality. Here, we examined the hypothesis that perinatal oxytocin exposure could have epigenetic and transcriptomic consequences. Prairie voles were exposed to exogenous oxytocin, through injections given to the mother just prior to birth, and
