Centronuclear myopathy (CNM), an uncommon condition, is one of the congenital myopathies. It is believed to arise as a result of maturational arrest, with persistence of myotubes postnatally. However, denervation being the basic disease process and its possible influence on central nervous system causing defect in nuclear migration has also been postulated. Keeping in view these existing controversies, we have studied 17 cases of CNM (neonatal - 1, childhood - 13, adulthood - 3) during the last twelve and a half years. Diagnosis was based on histological and enzyme histochemical findings of mu

The recombinant limb is a model system that has proved fruitful for analyzing epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and understanding the functional properties of the components of the limb bud. Here we present an overview of some of the insights obtained through the use of this technique. Among these are the understanding that fore or hind limb identity is inherent to the limb bud mesoderm, that the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) is a permissive signaling center and that the limb bud ectoderm plays a central role in the control of dorsoventral polarity. Recombinant limb studies have also allowed

Dissection of the peripheral nerve is associated inherently with the development of posttraumatic neuroma on the end of the proximal stump of damaged nerve. It is unfavourable, as it causes pain on the side of dissected nerve and additionally it is an obstacle in case of secondary surgical reconstruction of the nerve. Among many methods of treating stumps of dissected nerves in order to avoid the development of neuromas, it is recommended to sew the proximal stump of dissected nerve into the venter of adjacent skeletal muscle. The present study is an evaluation of histological changes occurrin

Biopsies from various skeletal muscles were taken post mortem from infants with conceptional ages between 25 and 40 weeks. Cryostat sections were analysed quantitatively. The growth of the mean fibre diameter follows an exponential curve, which is mainly due to an initial predominance of type II-fibres. Before the 34th week of gestation only isolated large "Wohlfart"-fibres show type I staining characteristics. A great number of smaller type I-fibres appear suddenly around the 34th week. Their percentage of the total fibre population increases linearly to 40% at term. The development of the "t

Magnetic resonance imaging is the current "gold standard" for measuring cervical muscle volume, but the associated time and cost may be prohibitive in numerous environments. This study sought to develop a novel and accessible model for estimating cervical muscle volume in adolescent athletes. It was hypothesized that cervical muscle volume could be accurately predicted using a combination of clinically accessible variables. This secondary analysis of clinical trial data utilized 78 sets of biomechanics lab measurements and neck magnetic resonance imaging scans collected in a total of 42 adoles

The development, metabolism, and functional maintenance of skeletal muscle is a complex dynamic balance process. Its imbalance may lead to muscular dystrophy, muscle atrophy, and other diseases, which seriously affect human health. Therefore, in-depth exploration of the regulatory mechanisms governing skeletal muscle homeostasis and the identification of effective therapeutic targets have garnered significant attention. Recent studies reveal that the protein arginine methyltransferase CARM1 plays a central regulatory role in skeletal muscle biology. Substantial evidence indicates that abnormal

Early diagnosis of Bell's palsy is crucial for effective patient management in primary care settings. This study aimed to develop a simplified diagnostic tool to enhance the accuracy of identifying Bell's palsy among patients with facial muscle weakness. Data from 240 patients were analyzed using seven potential clinical evaluation indicators. Two diagnostic benchmarks were established: one based on clinical assessment and the other incorporating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. A multivariate logistic regression model was developed based on these benchmarks, resulting in the constru

BACKGROUND: Most patients with malignant hyperthermia susceptibility diagnosed by the in vitro caffeine-halothane contracture test (CHCT) develop excessive force in response to halothane but not caffeine (halothane-hypersensitive). Hallmarks of halothane-hypersensitive patients include high incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms at rest and abnormal calcium events in muscle. By measuring sensitivity to halothane of myotubes and extending clinical observations and cell-level studies to a large group of patients, we reach new insights into the pathological mechanism of malignant hyperthermia susc

The mouth is a central feature of our face, without which we could not eat, breathe, or communicate. A critical and early event in mouth formation is the creation of a "hole" which connects the digestive system and the external environment. This hole, which has also been called the primary or embryonic mouth in vertebrates, is initially covered by a 1-2 cell layer thick structure called the buccopharyngeal membrane. When the buccopharyngeal membrane does not rupture, it impairs early mouth functions and may also lead to further craniofacial malformations. Using a chemical screen in an animal m

Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are essential for muscle growth, maintenance and repair. Over the past decade, experiments in Drosophila have been instrumental in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating MuSCs (also known as adult muscle precursors, AMPs) during development. A large number of genetic tools available in fruit flies provides an ideal framework to address new questions which could not be addressed with other model organisms. This review reports the main findings revealed by the study of Drosophila AMPs, with a specific focus on how AMPs are specified and properly

Myogenesis is a complex, regulated process that involves myoblast proliferation, migration, adhesion, and fusion into myotubes. To investigate early development of embryonic muscles and the expression of regulatory genes during myogenesis in chicken, quail and their hybrids, meat-breeding cocks and egg-breeding cocks were selected as male parents, quails were used as female parents. Their offspring were meat and egg hybrids via Artificial insemination. We measured expression of MUSTN1, IGF-1, and PDK4 using qRT-PCR. We examined muscle fiber diameter using scanning electron microscopy. The resu

Preterm infants can develop airway hyperreactivity and impaired bronchodilation following supplemental O2 (hyperoxia) in early life, making it important to understand mechanisms of hyperoxia effects. Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) has anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects with oxidative stress. There is little understanding of H2 S signaling in developing airways. We hypothesized that the endogenous H2 S system is detrimentally influenced by O2 and conversely H2 S signaling pathways can be leveraged to attenuate deleterious effects of O2 . Using human fetal airway smooth muscle (fASM)

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to severe and permanent functional deficits. In humans, peri-auricular muscles (PAMs) do not serve any physiological function, though their innervation is preserved in even high level SCI. Auricular control systems provide a good example of leveraging contemporary technologies (e.g., sEMG controlled computer games) to enable those with disabilities. Our primary objective is to develop and test the effectiveness of an auricular muscle training protocol to facilitate isolated and coordinated, bilateral voluntary control that could be used in individu

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A)-induced quadriceps muscle atrophy on the cartilage and subchondral bone in an otherwise intact rat joint model.
METHODS: The rat right quadriceps muscle atrophy was established by intramuscular injection of BTX-A. Twenty-four rats were divided randomly into 3 groups: The BTX-A-treated 4-week group; the BTX-A-treated 8-week group; and the control group injected with phosphate buffer saline were observed for 8 weeks. Muscle atrophy level was measured by weighing and histology examinations. Se

OBJECTIVES: The long-term goal of this research is to determine whether the middle ear muscle reflex can be used to predict the number of healthy auditory nerve fibers in hearing-impaired ears. In this study, we develop a high-impedance source and an animal model of the middle ear muscle reflex and explore the influence of signal frequency and level on parameters of the reflex to determine an optimal signal to examine auditory nerve fiber survival.
DESIGN: A high-impedance source was developed using a hearing aid receiver attached to a 0.06 diameter 10.5-cm length tube. The impedance probe co

The potential role of sensory feedback from human extraocular muscles has been subjected to considerable speculation in the ophthalmic literature. Extraocular muscles pull against a fairly even load and do not initiate a stretch reflex, even when the eyes are directed toward the boundaries of their respective field of action. These unique working conditions and physiological properties have led to the notion that the sensory signal arising from receptors in extraocular muscles differs from the conventional proprioceptive signal arising from their somatic counterparts. The interest in the recep
