Papillary serous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy arising in a parovarian paramesonephric cyst. Light microscopic and ultrastructural observations.

This is the first ultrastructural study of a neoplasm arising in a parovarian Müllerian (paramesonephric) cyst. By light and electron microscopy this tumour bore a close resemblance to the ovarian serous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy. This resemblance to serous neoplasms of the ovary and to other tumours of Müllerian duct derivation was the strongest claim to its origin. Other features which indicated Müllerian origin included the absence of a well-defined basement membrane, the presence of distinct muscle coats and the relatively large size of the epithelial cells and their nuclei. Decoding myoepithelioma: Highlighting diagnostic dilemmas through a series of rare cases.

Myoepitheliomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of the salivary glands. Minor salivary gland neoplasms most frequently occur in the palate (hard palate), followed by the lips, oral mucosa, and tongue/floor of the mouth. Additionally, less prevalent locations encompass the retromolar area, pharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and larynx. The lack of distinctive cytologic features and bland morphology in both benign and malignant myoepitheliomas necessitates the use of histopathology and immunohistochemistry for accurate diagnosis. Hence, here, we report a series of three cases, including tw

Glomus tumor of the trachea - Synopsis of histology & methodology of treatment.

Glomus tumors are neoplasms arising from modified smooth muscle cells surrounding arteriovenous anastomosis in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, which are contributing to blood flow regulation and temperature control on the skin surface. Glomus cells are sparse or absent in visceral organs, making extracutaneous presentation of glomus tumors an extremely rare finding. We briefly report histological considerations on glomus tumors of the trachea and sum the multidisciplinary aspects of their staged endoscopic and surgical management using the example of a rare case presentation.

Oesophageal glomus tumours: rare neoplasms with aggressive clinical behaviour.

AIMS: Glomus tumours are neoplasms with perivascular smooth muscle differentiation, which rarely occur in the oesophagus and may behave aggressively in this site based upon prior case reports. This study describes the clinicopathologic features of three oesophageal glomus tumours diagnosed at two large academic institutions between 1984 and 2022. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three cases of oesophageal glomus tumours were identified. Patients included two females and one male, with an age range of 19-65 years. All three tumours behaved in a malignant fashion, with metastases to various sites (lymph no

Solitary fibrous tumors of the skin: a clinicopathologic study of 10 cases and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively uncommon neoplasm that most commonly arises in the pleura. However, SFT is now known to affect various other anatomic sites as well, including rare examples in the skin, where the histologic features of this lesion may create diagnostic confusion with a variety of other spindle-cell tumors. In order to further the characterization of cutaneous SFT, all available cases of that entity were retrieved from the authors' institutional files. Immunohistochemical analysis for CD-34, CD-99, vimentin, bcl-2, factor XIIIa, S100 protein, smooth muscle actin, pa

Operative exposure and management of the petrous and upper cervical internal carotid artery.

The exposure and operative management of the petrous and upper cervical internal carotid artery (ICA) in 29 patients is detailed. Twenty-seven of these patients had extensive cranial base neoplasms (benign or malignant), 1 had an inflammatory cholesteatoma, and 1 had an aneurysm of the upper cervical ICA immediately proximal to the carotid canal. Preoperative studies useful in the evaluation of these patients included computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, cerebral and cervical angiography, and a balloon occlusion test of the ICA with evaluation of neurological status and of cerebral

PEComa with ASPSCR1::TFE3 fusion: expanding the molecular genetic spectrum of TFE3-rearranged PEComa with an emphasis on overlap with alveolar soft part sarcoma.

AIMS: Mesenchymal neoplasms involving TFE3 gene fusions are diverse, mainly include alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) that is characterised by ASPSCR1::TFE3 fusion, and a small subset of perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (PEComas) referred to as TFE3-rearranged PEComa, that most frequently harbours SFPQ::TFE3 fusion. Historically, ASPS and TFE3-rearranged PEComa are considered two distinctive entities despite their known morphological overlap. However, recent studies have suggested a potential histogenetic relationship between them, and several neoplasms that showed morphological features

Cutaneous Histiocytic Sarcoma with Giant Cells in a Free-ranging Brush Rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani).

A cutaneous mass in a free-ranging brush rabbit (Sylvilagus bachmani) was composed of neoplastic spindle to polygonal cells with multinucleated giant cells, which were positive for CD204 and negative for smooth muscle actin and desmin. Histiocytic sarcoma with giant cells was diagnosed; this neoplasm has not been reported previously in free-ranging lagomorphs.

Intraosseous leiomyoma of the mandible.

An intraosseous leiomyoma arising within the mandible was diagnosed in a 24-year-old woman. Clinically, a nodular swelling of the lower border of the mandible was noted. Radiographically, a unilocular ellipsoid radiolucency, loss of the lower border of the mandible, and tooth resorption were observed. The mitotic count was 0.4 per 10 high-power fields, which supported the benign nature of the tumor. The clinical and histologic parameters for distinguishing between benign and malignant smooth muscle neoplasms are discussed.

Novel NCOA2/3-rearranged low-grade fibroblastic spindle cell tumors: A report of five cases.

Spindle cell mesenchymal neoplasms are a diverse and often challenging diagnostic group. While morphological impression is sufficient for some diagnoses, increasingly immunohistochemical and even molecular data is required to render an accurate diagnosis, which can lead to the characterization of new entities. We describe five cases of novel mesenchymal neoplasms with rearrangements in the NCOA2 and NCOA3 genes partnered with either CTCF or CRTC1. Three tumors occurred in the head and neck (palate, auditory canal), while the other two were in visceral organs (lung, urinary bladder). All cases

Gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors. 'Plexosarcomas'.

Four plexosarcomas (gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors) characterized by light microscopic, immunocytochemical, and ultrastructural examination, including immunoelectron microscopy in one case, are described. The four neoplasms occurred in the small intestine (duodenum, two; jejunum, one; and ileum, one) and they had an aggressive course with either local or distant metastases. The light-microscopic patterns varied from epithelioid and organoid to spindle cells, mimicking endocrine and sarcomatous neoplasms. Ultrastructurally, these tumors exhibited interdigitating cytoplasmic processes t

CT features, mimics and atypical presentations of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).

The term stromal tumor was coined in 1983 by Clark and Mazur for smooth muscle neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are nonepithelial tumors arising from the interstitial cells of Cajal, which express KIT protein-CD117 on immunohistochemistry. GIST can arise anywhere in the GIT, including the mesentery, omentum, and retroperitoneum.

Renal cell carcinoma-associated adult dermatomyositis treated laparoscopic nephrectomy.

A 77-year-old female, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism, developed severe muscle weakness. Clinical features, blood results and muscle biopsy suggested a possible diagnosis of dermatomyositis. A computed tomography of the chest, abdomen and pelvis showed a solid mass in the left kidney. She underwent a left laparoscopic nephrectomy and histology confirmed conventional (clear cell) renal cell carcinoma. She recovered slowly and almost back to normal life after 6 months. Early appreciation of the typical skin rash may provide a clue to the diagnosis and screening for neop

Detection of malignant soft tissue tumors in bone imaging.

A total of 2530 consecutive bone scans were examined to evaluate the number and the type of soft tissue neoplasms detected with bone-seeking phosphonates. Sixty-eight primary or secondary soft tissue neoplasms of 63 patients accumulated 99mTc -methylene diphosphonate and 2 accumulated 99mTc -diphosphonate, and one metastasis was seen as a nonactive 'cold' focus in the urinary bladder. The localization of tumors was: 19 in the lung, 15 in the liver, 11 in the kidney, 10 in the peritoneal cavity or ascites, 5 in the large bowel, 4 in the vascular or lymphatic system, 3 in the connective tissue o

Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis: an unusual presentation of intra-abdominal lesion mimicking disseminated malignancy.

Leiomyoma are commonly seen as benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. Smooth muscle tumors with unusual growth pattern are rare and include 3 primary neoplasms: intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL), benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) and disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL). DPL is a rare benign disease, often giving the appearance of metastatic ovarian or peritoneal carcinoma. It is a disease that predominately affects women at their reproductive age. The risk of malignant transformation is 2-5%. There are no standard treatment guidelines for the management of the DPL. The unusual p

Ovarian Sex Cord Stromal Tumor in a Free-Ranging Brown Bear (Ursus arctos).

Reports on neoplasms in bears are scarce, especially concerning ovarian tumors. A large primary ovarian neoplasm with multiple metastasis was found during the necropsy of a 14-year-old free-ranging Eurasian brown bear (Ursus arctos) from Northwestern Spain. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry allowed for the diagnosis of a sex cord stromal tumor. This is a complex group of neoplasms which differ in the predominant cell morphology and immunohistochemical features. The microscopic examination revealed two types of cells, one with eosinophilic cytoplasm, intermingled with larger vacuolated ce
