Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal coordinated molecular responses associated with nano-enabled arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis for salt stress tolerance in rice.

Salinity stress is a major environmental constraint limiting rice growth and yield. Seed nanopriming with calcium oxide nanomaterials (CaO NMs) in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) has recently emerged as an effective strategy to enhance resilience, although the underlying responses remain unexplored. In the present study, rice seeds primed with CaO NMs (80 ppm) and inoculated with the AMF Claroideoglomus claroideum at transplanting were evaluated under 175 mM NaCl stress to assess their effects on plant performance and metabolic responses. The combined treatment significant

Population Density and Root Colonization of AM Fungi in the Mycorrhizosphere of Semiarid Plant Species.

The ecological role of Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in subtropical semiarid habitats is yet unexplored. Five subtropical semiarid plant species-Bambusa arundinacea (Retz.) Wild., Borassus flabellifer L., Eucalyptus globulus Labill, Euphorbia antiquorum L., and Vachellia leucophloea (Roxb.)-collected from the Pudukkottai district of south India were used in this study to examine the diversity, abundance, and root colonization of AMF. The study aims to determine the mycorrhizal status of these host plants, investigate the connection between root colonization and AMF spore quantity, and est

Improved methodology for tracing a pulse of 13C-labelled tree photosynthate carbon to ectomycorrhizal roots, other soil biota and soil processes in the field.

Isotopic pulse-labelling of photosynthate allows tracing of carbon (C) from tree canopies to below-ground biota and calculations of its turnover in roots and recipient soil microorganisms. A high concentration of label is desirable but is difficult to achieve in field studies of intact ecosystem patches with trees. Moreover, root systems of trees overlap considerably in most forests, which requires a large labelled area to minimize the impact of C allocated below-ground by un-labelled trees. We describe a method which combines a high level of labelling at ambient concentrations of CO2, [CO2],

Response of tomatoes primed by mycorrhizal colonization to virulent and avirulent bacterial pathogens.

Most plants interact with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which enhance disease resistance in the host plant. Because the effects of resistance against bacterial pathogens are poorly understood, we investigated the effects of mycorrhizal colonization on virulent and avirulent pathogens using phytopathological and molecular biology techniques. Tomato plants colonized by Gigaspora margarita acquired resistance not only against the fungal pathogen, Botrytis cinerea, but also against a virulent bacterial pathogen, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst). In G. margarita-colonized tomato, salicy

Significance of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi for Acacia: A Review.

Microbes play a vital role in ecosystem stability. Here, microbes-Acacia association is discussed with particular reference to Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) which help in the establishment of crop-plants, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. The association helps to restore the structural composition of soil from the hazardous impact of agrochemicals, increase resistance against various pathogenic attack as well as several abiotic stresses. Further, a comparative account of microbes found in the rhizosphere of Acacia is illustrated. Among these, Rhizobia, Acetobacter, Bradyrhizobium, B

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus modulates the phytotoxicity of Cd via combined responses of enzymes, thiolic compounds, and essential elements in the roots of Phragmites australis.

The positive effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on host plants under heavy metal (HM) stress conditions have been widely recognized. HMs are known to induce phytotoxicity through 1) the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), 2) the direct interaction with thiol groups or 3) the competition with essential elements. However, how AM fungus inoculation can affect defense mechanisms against cadmium (Cd) stress, which can regulate and alleviate the phytotoxicity via different pathways, is still unclear. We hypothesized that one or some factors in each pathway of phytotoxicity were in

Biases for detecting arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal mixture by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP).

Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of amplified ribosomal RNA genes is used for profiling microbial communities and sometimes for species richness and relative abundance estimation in environmental samples. However, the T-RFLP fingerprint may be subject to biases during the procedure, influencing the detection of real community structures in the environment. To investigate possible sources of T-RFLP bias, 18S rRNA gene clones derived from two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal sequences were combined in simple pairwise mixes to assess the effects of polymerase chain

Patterns and Drivers of Sustainable Agricultural Practice Adoption Among Mennonite Farmers in a Closed Endorheic Basin of Northern Mexico.

Agricultural sustainability in closed endorheic basins is constrained by periodic water scarcity, hydrological isolation, and the cumulative effects of intensive land use. The Cuauhtémoc region of northern Mexico hosts long-established Mennonite farming communities whose mechanized and irrigation-dependent agriculture constitutes an important component of the regional economy and resource-use system. This study examined the prevalence, diversity, and drivers of sustainable agricultural practices among 95 Mennonite farmers in the Bustillos Lagoon region. Thirteen practices spanning soil and res

OsIDD7 integrates signaling networks for arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is a widespread mutualism between plant roots and Glomeromycotina fungi that enables nutrient exchange through arbuscules. Although many transcriptional regulators of AM symbiosis have been identified, the role of the INDETERMINATE DOMAIN (IDD) proteins remain unknown. We show that rice IDD7 expression is strongly induced in arbuscule-containing cells, and its loss markedly reduces fungal colonization and disrupts arbuscule development. IDD7 is required for induction of genes associated with fatty acid biosynthesis, nutrient transport, and symbiotic signal

HCN-producing Pseudomonas protegens CHA0 affects intraradical viability of Rhizophagus irregularis in Sorghum vulgare roots.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria inhabit the plant rhizosphere. Both functional groups can influence plant community structures, and interactions between them can vary from being synergistic to antagonistic. HCN-producing Pseudomonas protegens CHA0 is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium. P. protegens CHA0 has been shown to weakly attach to AMF hyphae. Here, we analyze the effect of P. protegens CHA0 on the viability of intraradical AMF hyphae. Using pot experiments, we have grown mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal Sorghum vulgare var. M35 with P. prot

Recent progress in plant nutrition research: cross-talk between nutrients, plant physiology and soil microorganisms.

Mineral nutrients taken up from the soil become incorporated into a variety of important compounds with structural and physiological roles in plants. We summarize how plant nutrients are linked to many metabolic pathways, plant hormones and other biological processes. We also focus on nutrient uptake, describing plant-microbe interactions, plant exudates, root architecture, transporters and their applications. Plants need to survive in soils with mineral concentrations that vary widely. Describing the relationships between nutrients and biological processes will enable us to understand the mol

Silicon Quantum Dot Seed Priming Combined with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Enhances Wheat Drought Tolerance through Physiological and Microbiome Regulation.

Although silicon quantum dot (SiQD) seed priming and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) fungal inoculation can individually alleviate drought stress, their combined effects and microbiome-associated processes remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of SiQD seed priming and AMF inoculation on wheat drought tolerance, plant physiology, and rhizosphere-hyphosphere bacterial communities. SiQDs increased AMF root colonization by 22.8%, and AMF inoculation enhanced shoot Si by 11.7%. Compared with either treatment, the combined treatment improved the leaf relative water content, photosynthetic r

Elevated CO2 alters relative belowground carbon investment for nutrient acquisition in a mature temperate forest.

Forests are potential carbon (C) sinks that partially offset anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions via enhanced C assimilation and productivity. However, the question remains whether mature trees will express sufficient plasticity in nutrient acquisition strategies to support enhanced growth under elevated CO2 (eCO2). Trees may sustain growth by investing C belowground to enhance nutrient acquisition, e.g., by increasing root absorptive surfaces for greater soil available resource exploration (a "do-it-yourself" strategy) or utilizing C exudation or mycorrhizal associations as priming m

Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Isolated From Rock Phosphate Mine and Agricultural Soil on the Improvement of Wheat Plant Growth.

The improvement of plant growth and yield becomes crucial to feed the rising world population, especially in harsh conditions, drought, salt stress, lack of nutrition, and many other challenges. To cope with these stresses, plants developed an adaptation strategy (mycorrhiza), which is an efficient way to reinforce their growth and resistance. For this purpose, we studied the influence of mycorrhizal fungi isolated from a natural rock phosphate mine in the vicinity of some native plants and agricultural soil to assess their capacity in increasing the growth, nutritional profile improvement, an

Arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation enhances Robinia pseudoacacia performance in zinc-contaminated soils via improved nutrient use and stress mitigation.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are recognized for their ability to mitigate the effects of zinc (Zn) stress in plants, though the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, Robinia pseudoacacia seedlings were exposed to varying levels of Zn stress (0, 500, and 1000 mg kg-1) with or without inoculation of Rhizophagus irregularis to explore how AMF symbiosis affects Zn uptake, phosphorus (P) acquisition, abscisic acid (ABA) distribution, and photosynthetic performance. Compared with the control, 500 mg kg-1 Zn reduced shoot and root biomass by 35 % and 28 %, respectively,

Food Waste Compost as a Tool of Microbiome-Assisted Agri-Culture for Sustainable Protection of Vegetable Crops Against Soil-Borne Parasites.

A low-scale Food Waste Compost (FWC1), characterized by optimal physic-chemical parameters and high organic matter percentages, was used as a fertilizer and a bio-stimulant for vegetable plants. Groups of treated plants were inoculated with active juveniles of root-knot nematodes to detect the effect on plant defense. Optimal amounts of compost mixed with soil increased plant biomass 30% compared to untreated plants. Moreover, when plants were inoculated, treated roots contained about 50% less sedentary forms (SFs) of nematodes and a lower reproduction rate of the parasites than untreated plan

Influence of soil organic matter decomposition on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in terms of asymbiotic hyphal growth and root colonization.

Soil organic matter is known to influence arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, but limited information is available on the chemical components in the organic matter causing these effects. We studied the influence of decomposing organic matter (pure cellulose and alfalfa shoot and root material) on AM fungi after 30, 100, and 300 days of decomposition in nonsterile soil with and without addition of mineral N and P. Decomposing organic matter affected maize root length colonized by the AM fungus Glomus claroideum in a similar manner as other plant growth parameters. Colonized root length was sligh

Purification and Analysis of Signaling Molecules in Plant-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Communication.

The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread mutualistic association between plants and fungi. The most widely recognized benefit of AM symbiosis for the host plant is a significant enhancement in the acquisition of mineral nutrients from the soil, particularly phosphorus. In addition to improved nutrition, AM symbiosis confers enhanced tolerance to a wide range of environmental stresses. Strigolactones (SLs) are a family of natural products produced by plants as shoot branching factors and are responsible for the induction of hyphal branching in arbuscular mycorrhizal fung
