Comparison of passive haemagglutination and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for serodiagnosis of plague.

Sera of 42 suspect plague cases from Ovamboland, Namibia, were examined. ELISA proved more sensitive than passive haemagglutination for the detection of F1 antibody and increased positive serodiagnoses of plague by 7-42%.

Emerging Artemisinin Partial Resistance in Southern Africa.

A new focus of probable artemisinin-partial resistance (ART-R) has been identified in southern Africa, driven by the P441L mutation in the Plasmodium falciparum Kelch13 gene. This emerging cross-border cluster across Angola, Namibia, and Zambia represents the fourth major ART-R focus identified in Africa, adding to the previously reported foci in East Africa and the Horn of Africa. Findings from three new studies reveal 7.3%, 33%, and 47% prevalence of P441L in specific sites in Angola, Namibia, and Zambia, respectively. The Genomics of Malaria in the Elimination 8 project enabled harmonized,

Using parasite genetic and human mobility data to infer local and cross-border malaria connectivity in Southern Africa.

Local and cross-border importation remain major challenges to malaria elimination and are difficult to measure using traditional surveillance data. To address this challenge, we systematically collected parasite genetic data and travel history from thousands of malaria cases across northeastern Namibia and estimated human mobility from mobile phone data. We observed strong fine-scale spatial structure in local parasite populations, providing positive evidence that the majority of cases were due to local transmission. This result was largely consistent with estimates from mobile phone and trave

Association between Physical Activity and Health Outcomes (High Body Fatness, High Blood Pressure) in Namibian Adolescents and Adult women.

Regular physical activity (PA) is known to promote the physical and mental health of children and adolescents and further prevent the development of health problems in adulthood. Information on body composition and PA is crucial for health promotion strategies and for epidemiological studies informing policies. However, there is limited data on the association between body composition and PA in Namibia. This dearth of published data is a significant shortcoming in the development of strategies and policies to promote PA in Namibia. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to determi

First report of a fish blood fluke from sub-Saharan Africa: Nomasanguinicola dentata (Paperna, 1964) Warren and Bullard, 2023 infecting African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Teugles, 1982 in the Kavango River, Namibia, and a revised phylogeny for Sanguinicolidae Poche, 1926.

We herein provide a supplemental description of Nomasanguinicola dentata (Paperna, 1964) Warren and Bullard, 2023 (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) and provide a revised 28S phylogeny to test relationships among freshwater fish blood flukes. We examined the heart of three African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Teugles, 1982 from the Kavango River (northeastern Namibia) that was infected with adults of N. dentata. This blood fluke differs from N. canthoensis by having a body 5.3-6.7 longer than wide (vs. 3.5-4.6), an anterior esophageal swelling 7-8% (vs. 14-24%) of total esop

Disease or drought: environmental fluctuations release zebra from a potential pathogen-triggered ecological trap.

When a transmission hotspot for an environmentally persistent pathogen establishes in otherwise high-quality habitat, the disease may exert a strong impact on a host population. However, fluctuating environmental conditions lead to heterogeneity in habitat quality and animal habitat preference, which may interrupt the overlap between selected and risky habitats. We evaluated spatio-temporal patterns in anthrax mortalities in a plains zebra (Equus quagga) population in Etosha National Park, Namibia, incorporating remote-sensing and host telemetry data. A higher proportion of anthrax mortalities

Body height, weight, and skeletal maturation in Hottentot (Khoikhoi) children.

Growth of body height and weight and skeletal maturation are discussed, based on 49 male and 61 female Hottentot children aged 3 to 17 years from Warmbad, Namibia (South West Africa) and 124 boys and 113 girls aged 1 to 21 years of related populations, the Rehoboth Basters of Namibia and Cape Coloreds from Cape Town, South Africa. The related populations are taller and heavier than the Hottentots, and have almost the same body height as American blacks and whites at least after the age of 18 years. In the Hottentots and Rehoboth Basters, the mean TW2 skeletal age is always less than the Britis

Gerbils without Borders: Invasiveness, Plague, and Micro-Global Histories of Science, 1932-1939.

In the 1930s, a series of bubonic plague outbreaks among humans cropped up in several villages at the border of Angola and Namibia. These outbreaks provoked deep concern, laying bare social and political tensions amongst neighboring imperial powers and Indigenous people within the region. Despite the appearance of this disease in what was then considered a recondite place, its spread sparked debate in transnational forums, such as the League of Nations and the Office International d'Hygiène Publique. Drawing upon archival records in Namibia, South Africa, Portugal, the United States, and the U

Learning from doing the EquitAble project: Content, context, process, and impact of a multi-country research project on vulnerable populations in Africa.

BACKGROUND: The 'EquitAble' project carried out content analyses of policies and collected and analysed qualitative and quantitative data concerning access to health services in Sudan, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa. Our particular concern was to address the situation of people with disabilities, although not in isolation from other marginalised or vulnerable groups. OBJECTIVES: This article reports on the content, context, process and impact of project EquitAble, funded by the European Commission Seventh Research Framework Programme, which brought together researchers from Ireland, Norway,

Skeletal dysplasia-like syndromes in wild giraffe.

OBJECTIVE: Skeletal dysplasias, cartilaginous or skeletal disorders that sometimes result in abnormal bone development, are seldom reported in free-ranging wild animals. Here, we use photogrammetry and comparative morphometric analyses to describe cases of abnormal appendicular skeletal proportions of free-ranging giraffe in two geographically distinct taxa: a Nubian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis) in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda and an Angolan giraffe (Giraffa giraffa angolensis) on a private farm in central Namibia. RESULTS: These giraffe exhibited extremely shorten

The clinical and histological features of South West African cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The clinical and histological features of 18 cases of dermal leishmaniasis encountered in South West Africa are described and discussed. The anatomical distribution of the leishmanial lesions differs from that encountered elsewhere in Africa, but the histopathological changes follow a pattern similar to that of Oriental sore in other parts of the world.

Children with kaposi sarcoma in two southern african hospitals: clinical presentation, management, and outcome.

Introduction. In 2010 more than 3 million children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The AIDS epidemic has contributed to an abrupt increase of the frequency of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), especially in Southern Africa. There is a need to describe the clinical features of this disease, its management, and its outcome in HIV positive children in Southern Africa. The aim of the study is to describe two different populations with HIV and KS from two African hospitals in Namibia and South Africa. Material and Methods. A retrospective descriptive study of patients

Erema po otjindjumba? Highlighting cultural models and knowledge gaps of malaria in rural Namibian pastoralists.

BACKGROUND: As Namibia attempts to eradicate locally transmitted cases of malaria, epidemiological strategies, interventions, and outreach require a sound understanding of indigenous knowledge and practice. Research describing local explanatory models of disease can be of value in these efforts by elucidating how disease is interpreted and treated. To understand how perceptions of malaria infection and treatment may influence health-seeking behaviour, cultural models of the disease were explored in two ethnic groups in rural northwest Namibia. METHODS: Mixed-sex focus groups of 4-8 individual

Six decades of malaria vector control in southern Africa: a review of the entomological evidence-base.

BACKGROUND: Countries in the southern Africa region have set targets for malaria elimination between 2020 and 2030. Malaria vector control is among the key strategies being implemented to achieve this goal. This paper critically reviews published entomological research over the past six decades in three frontline malaria elimination countries namely, Botswana Eswatini and Namibia, and three second-line malaria elimination countries including Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The objective of the review is to assess the current knowledge and highlight gaps that need further research attention t

Rabies in kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros).

Cycles of terrestrial rabies are associated with carnivores. In non-carnivorous species, rabies typically occurs as a spill-over from the carnivore reservoir and quickly encounters a dead end in such species. One major exception to this scenario has been an ongoing epizootic of rabies in the Greater Kudu, an African antelope. These herbivores are found in high densities in southern Africa, but rabies cycles have only been described from Namibia, a vast country located in the South Western region of Africa. Epizootics were first noted in the late 1970's and losses of up to 50 000 animals were e

Learners' perspectives on the prevention and management of pregnancy school dropout: a Namibian case.

BACKGROUND: Namibia has had a problem with the high rate of learner pregnancy and school dropout for many years, despite implementing education sector policy on preventing and managing learner pregnancy. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of school-going learners in Namibia regarding the factors contributing to learner pregnancy and school dropout and propose interventions to address them. METHODS: This qualitative research employed interpretative phenomenological data analysis, with seventeen individual and ten focus group interviews involving 63 school-going learners: adolescents,

Plumes and blooms - Locally-sourced Fe-rich aeolian mineral dust drives phytoplankton growth off southwest Africa.

Ocean-based photosynthesis accounts for half of global primary production. Productivity rates, driven by phytoplanktonic responses to nutrient availability, are however highly variable both spatially and temporally throughout the oceans. Intense primary production in the ocean's most productive areas, the Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS), cannot be fully explained by nutrient upwelling alone, with the role of local dust sources and complimentary aeolian nutrient delivery largely overlooked. Here we explore relationships between iron-rich dust plumes emanating from a significant region

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Southern Africa. A case report.

The microscopical findings in a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis from South West Africa are presented in order to highlight the pathology of this disease and facilitate its recognition, should unsuspected cases occur in the Republic of South Africa. In addition, the ultrastructural findings confirm the presence of typical Leishmania which occur in the cytoplasm of macrophages where they are undergoing destruction. This adds a further dimension to the characterization of this disease in southern Africa.
