Reduced cervical cancer incidence and mortality in Canada: national data from 1932 to 2006.

BACKGROUND: High levels of participation in cervical screening are reported in Canada from the 1970's as a result of early uptake of the Pap smear and universal Medicare. Despite recommendations to the contrary, the programs have featured early age of initiation of screening and frequent screening intervals. Other countries have achieved successful outcomes without such features. We analyzed national data to better understand mortality and incidence trends, and their relationships to screening. METHODS: The Canadian Cancer Registry, National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the Canadian

Computed Tomography Colonography in Fecal Immunochemical Test Positives in a Colorectal Cancer Screening Program.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In the Dutch colorectal cancer (CRC) screening program, fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-positives are offered computed tomography colonography (CTC) instead of colonoscopy in case of comorbidities or patient refusal. Literature on CTC in FIT-positives is scarce, and the risk of post-CT interval CRC (PCT-CRC) in this population is unknown. METHODS: In this cohort study, we assessed CTC yield, clinical management, and risk of PCT-CRC in FIT-positives who underwent CTC between 2014 and 2019 in the Dutch CRC screening program. Data were linked with the National Cancer Registry

Exposure to radon and heavy particulate pollution and incidence of brain tumors.

BACKGROUND: Global incidence for brain tumors varies substantially without explanation. Studies correlating radon exposure and incidence are inconclusive. Particulate pollution has been linked to increased tumor incidence. Particulates may disrupt the blood-brain barrier allowing intracranial exposure to oncogenic radon. We investigated the relationship between exposure to residential radon, particulate pollution, and brain tumor incidence in the United States (US). METHODS: County-level median radon testing results and annual air quality index values were obtained and divided into tertiles.

Incidence of cancer in children aged 0-14 years in Taiwan, 1996-2010.

Studies have found lower risk of childhood cancer among Asian children. We aim to characterize the recent incidence and incidence-trend of childhood cancer in Taiwan after the National Health Insurance program was launched in March 1995. Data were extracted from the Taiwan Cancer Registry, a population-based database established in 1979. Cases diagnosed at age 0-14 from 1996 to 2010 were analyzed and categorized according to the International Classification of Childhood Cancer, Third Edition (ICCC-3). In total, 8032 childhood cancer cases were included, with a microscopic verification rate of

Merkel cell carcinoma and multiple primary cancers.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin for which causative factors remain largely unknown. The site-specific risks of multiple primary cancers associated with MCC, which may provide insight into etiologic influences, have not been quantified in large population-based studies. We estimated the long-term risk of subsequent primary tumors after a first primary MCC (1,306 patients) and the risk of second primary MCC following other first primary cancers (2,048,739 patients) within 11 population-based cancer registries which report to the National Cancer Insti

Burden, Patterns and Challenges of Cancer Among Tribal Communities in India.

Cancer poses a growing public health challenge in India, which ranks third globally in incidence and is projected to see a 57.5% increase by 2040. Despite this, Population-Based Cancer Registries (PBCRs) cover only 0.1% of India's rural population, limiting data on marginalized groups, especially tribal communities. As per the Indian constitution "tribal" are identified as "Scheduled Tribes" recognized for taking protective measures for theses marginalized group. Representing 8.6% of the national population, indigenous population formally called "tribal" populations face rising, often underrep

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a lymphedema and fibrosis self-management program for head and neck cancer survivors: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) are at high risk for developing lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF). Once diagnosed with LEF, survivors must engage in a lifelong program of self-care to minimize long-term adverse effects. However, evidence-based LEF self-management (SM) programs are lacking. To fill this void, we developed and pilot-tested a LEF-SM program for HNC survivors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The LEF-SM Program was developed using the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model of health behavior change as a framework. The program was pilot tested in a three-group random
