Efficacy of florfenicol in the treatment of experimentally induced infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy of florfenicol in an induced model of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, using a blinded randomized, controlled trial. ANIMALS: 48 male Holstein calves, 2 to 4 months old. PROCEDURE: Moraxella bovis infection was induced in all calves. When corneal ulcers developed, each calf was assigned randomly to 1 of 3 treatment groups, using a block design determined by corneal ulcer size (day 0). Calves were treated with florfenicol (20 mg/kg of body weight, IM) on days 0 and 2 (IM group; n = 16). Calves of a second group received a single dose of florfenicol (40 m

Prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Neisseria elongata subsp. elongata in a patient with Klinefelter's syndrome.

A case is reported of prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Neisseria elongata subsp. elongata in a patient with Klinefelter's syndrome. This is believed to be only the third case of endocarditis reported due to this subspecies. N. elongata is difficult to identify, and is morphologically and biochemically similar to Kingella spp. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene is useful for identification. The patient was successfully treated with amoxicillin and gentamicin, followed by ceftriaxone.

An outbreak of Kingella kingae infections associated with hand, foot and mouth disease/herpangina virus outbreak in Marseille, France, 2013.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of invasive Kingella kingae infections recently emerged as a new public health concern in daycare centers in Europe, USA and Israel. Despite this, no trigger factor has been yet identified, preventing the setting up of rational measures of control and prevention. We report an outbreak of K. kingae infections associated with hand, foot and mouth disease/herpangina outbreak, and we define the research and policy priorities. METHODS: From April 22 to May 07, 2013, 5 toddlers presented successive osteo-articular infections in a daycare center in Marseille, France. Real-time

Lack of Additional Diagnostic Yield of 16s rRNA Gene PCR for Prosthetic Joint Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Medical management of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) relies on the identification of causative organisms through traditional culture-based approaches to guide therapy. However, diagnosis of many PJIs remains challenging, with many clinically apparent infections remaining culture-negative. Molecular diagnostics have the potential to increase diagnostic yield, particularly among culture-negative PJIs. METHODS: Bone, tissue, or synovial fluid from patients with clinically identified PJIs were collected for inclusion in this study. Samples were assessed with traditional cultures

[Osteoarticular infections: therapeutic proposals of the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Group of the French Society of Paediatrics (GPIP)].

The empiric choice of initial antibiotherapy in osteoarticular infections in infants and children must take into consideration the actual epidemiology of principal pathogens, their respective antibiotic sensitivity profile, their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties and the results of efficacy clinical studies. After a review of recent data concerning these four major points, the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Group of the French Society of Paediatrics (GPIP) has proposed guidelines for initial recommended schemes of antimicrobial therapy in acute and non complicated osteoarticular i

Role of penA polymorphisms for penicillin susceptibility in Neisseria lactamica and Neisseria meningitidis.

In meningococci, reduced penicillin susceptibility is associated with five specific mutations in the transpeptidase region of penicillin binding protein 2 (PBP2). We showed that the same set of mutations was present in 64 of 123 Neisseria lactamica strains obtained from a carriage study (MIC range: 0.125-2.0mg/L). The PBP2 encoding penA alleles in these strains were genetically similar to those found in intermediate resistant meningococci suggesting frequent interspecies genetic exchange. Fifty-six N. lactamica isolates with mostly lower penicillin MICs (range: 0.064-0.38mg/L) exhibited only t

Neisseria elongata subsp elongata infective endocarditis following endurance exercise.

A 31-year-old Argentinian woman presented with a 3-week history of fever, night sweats, myalgia and lethargy following a work trip to Uganda where she ran a marathon. Malarial screens were negative but C reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and neutrophil count were raised and she was anaemic. A new pansystolic murmur was heard over the mitral valve and the transthoracic echocardiogram showed a large vegetation (>1 cm) with at least moderate mitral regurgitation. Blood cultures grew Neisseria elongata, subsp elongata treated initially with ceftriaxone then oral ciprofloxacin to com

Carriage of Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica in northern Greece.

In response to an increase in the number of cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in northern regions of Greece, a survey was carried out to determine if there was an increase in carriage of Neisseria meningitidis, particularly in areas where there have been increases in immigrant populations from neighbouring countries. The second objective was to determine if there was an increase in the serogroup C:2a:P1.5,2 a phenotype associated with recent outbreaks or changes in antibiotic sensitivities. As carriage of Neisseria lactamica is associated with development of natural immunity to IMD

Human airway epithelial cell responses to Neisseria lactamica and purified porin via Toll-like receptor 2-dependent signaling.

The human airway epithelium is constantly exposed to microbial products from colonizing organisms. Regulation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) expression and specific interactions with bacterial ligands is thought to mitigate exacerbation of inflammatory processes induced by the commensal flora in these cells. The genus Neisseria comprises pathogenic and commensal organisms that colonize the human nasopharynx. Neisseria lactamica is not associated with disease, but N. meningitidis occasionally invades the host, causing meningococcal disease and septicemia. Upon colonization of the airway epithelium

Neisseria macacae pneumonia in a patient with spinal cord injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although Neisseria macacae has been recognized as a commensal of macaque oral flora since 1983, its involvement in human disease remains remarkably uncommon. Prior literature documented fewer than a handful of infections, ranging from reddish rash, bacteremia to invasive conditions such as endocarditis and peritonitis. Strikingly, the respiratory system has not been reported as a site of infection. We first reported a case of pneumonia due to N. macacae. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old male developed pneumonia during treatment for a cervical spine fracture complicated by spinal c

Carriage of Neisseria lactamica in 1- to 29-year-old people in Burkina Faso: epidemiology and molecular characterization.

Neisseria lactamica is a true commensal bacterium occupying the same ecological niche as the pathogenic Neisseria meningitidis, which is responsible for outbreaks and large epidemics, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. To better understand the epidemiology of N. lactamica in Africa and its relationship to N. meningitidis, we studied N. lactamica carriage in 1- to 29-year-old people living in three districts of Burkina Faso from 2009 to 2011. N. lactamica was detected in 18.2% of 45,847 oropharyngeal samples. Carriage prevalence was highest among the 2-year-olds (40.1%) and decreased with age. O

New real-time PCR-based method for Kingella kingae DNA detection: application to samples collected from 89 children with acute arthritis.

Inoculation of blood culture vials with joint fluid samples has revealed the important pathogenic role of Kingella kingae in pediatric arthritis. However, recent studies based on broad-range 16S ribosomal DNA PCR and real-time PCR without a probe suggest that conventional methods remain suboptimal. We developed a new real-time PCR method with a probe that is highly specific for K. kingae and applied it to joint fluid samples collected from 89 children with suspected arthritis admitted to our institution during a 2-year period. Real-time PCR was also applied to blood samples obtained before sur

Emergence of a new virulent clone within the electrophoretic type 5 complex of serogroup B meningococci in Norway.

An increase in B:15:P1.12 meningococci among isolates from patients with Neisseria meningitidis infection in Norway in recent years led to further characterization of such strains. Between 1987 and 1992, B:15:P1.12 strains constituted 9.8% (24 strains) of B:15 isolates. The B:15:P1.12 strains belonged to the electrophoretic type 5 (ET-5) complex, but 17 (71%) strains were a new clone (ET-5c) not found elsewhere in the world. All but one strain of ET-5c were responsible for a localized outbreak of systemic meningococcal disease in western Norway. A novel monoclonal antibody (202,G-12), develope

Septic knee arthritis after intra-articular hyaluronate injection. Two case reports.

Intraarticular sodium hyaluronate injection to treat osteoarthritis is associated with minor side effects. Infections seem uncommon. We report two cases of septic knee arthritis. One patient was an 80-year-old woman who was admitted for Staphylococcus aureus knee arthritis after several intraarticular injections of sodium hyaluronate and corticosteroids. In the other patient, a 78-year-old woman, Neisseria mucosa knee arthritis occurred after a single sodium hyaluronate injection. Faultless aseptic technique is essential when administering hyaluronate viscosupplementation. Patients should be i

Association between oropharyngeal carriage of Kingella kingae and osteoarticular infection in young children: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Kingella kingae has been increasingly identified in patients with osteoarticular infections. Our main objective was to evaluate the association between carriage of K. kingae in the oropharynx of preschool children and osteoarticular infections. METHODS: We conducted this prospective case-control study in 2 tertiary care pediatric hospitals (Canada and Switzerland) between 2014 and 2016. Potential cases were children aged 6 to 48 months with a presumptive diagnosis of osteoarticular infection according to the treating emergency physician. Confirmed cases were those with diagnosis o
