Which Factors Influence Local Recurrence After Oncological Ablation of Midfacial Tumors?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence of locally recurrent midfacial tumors and the associated clinical features and risk factors. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Records of 327 midfacial tumor patients treated between 2010 and 2018 were reviewed. Clinical features and directions associated with local recurrence were analyzed. RESULTS: The study sample was composed of 327 subjects, and had a male-to-female ratio of 1.24:1. The median age was 57 years (range, 13-84 y). The median follow-up time was 28 months (range, 8-160 mo). The local recurrence r

Multifocal inverted papillomas in the head and neck.

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm that usually originates in the lateral nasal wall. It can be a locally aggressive lesion and invade nearby structures. While primarily a nasal neoplasm, cases of an inverted papilloma involving the temporal bone, pharynx, nasopharynx, and lacrimal sac have been reported. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a history of nasal inverted papilloma who presented with a recurrent nasal mass and a large mass on the left side of his upper neck. The patient's history included inverted papillomas in multiple locations: the temporal bone, the sinona

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma: a report of two cases and clinicopathological analysis.

Sinonasalteratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is a highly malignant and aggressive neoplasm which can quickly damage the local soft tissue, bone tissue, and invade orbital and intracranial tissues. It also can result in local lymph node and distant organ metastasis. The data from 2 cases of SNTCS from the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College (China), treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy followed by cranio-facial resection, were analyzed since 2016. The main symptoms of the two patients were of the nasal cavity with nasal congestion and runny nose. There was no recurrence after sur

Delayed radiation necrosis of brainstem related to fast neutron beam irradiation: case report and literature review.

A 42-year-old man developed necrosis of the brainstem 10 months following fast neutron irradiation of a recurrent adenocystic carcinoma of the right submandibular salivary gland. The neoplasm had been diagnosed 15 years earlier. Neck dissection and several local excisions failed to control local extension, so that 7000 rad 4.8 MeV x-rays were administered. The right mandible and part of the tongue and palate were resected for recurrence and chemotherapy and transfer factor were given. Because of cranial neuropathy and erosion of the skull base, fast neutron radiation (2.080 rads) was administe

Current techniques for the surgical management of malignant lesions of the thoracic esophagus and cardia.

Cancers of the esophagus and cardia remain serious conditions that cause many thousands of deaths every year throughout the world. In North America, cancer of the esophagus and gastric cardia is an endemic disease of low order and stable incidence. Nevertheless, it is responsible for many deaths and considerable suffering. With current methods of treatment, substantial palliation and amelioration of patient disability are possible, and some patients gain long-term survival with comfort and even cure. A combination of surgical resection and reconstruction is the chief modern method of managemen

Intraoperative hand held gamma probe detection of a recurrent nonfunctional neuroendocrine tumor.

CONTEXT: The advantage of intraoperative gamma probe detection with (111)In-DPTA-octreotide radiotracer has previously been demonstrated in functional neuroendocrine tumors. We report the only known case of a recurrent nonfunctional pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm localized intraoperatively using this radiotracer and a hand held gamma probe. CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old woman was found to have a recurrence 23 months after laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy, splenectomy and wedge resection of a liver metastasis for a non-functional neuroendocirne neoplasm of the pancreas. Clinical application of next-generation sequencing for the management of desmoid tumors: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Desmoid tumors are rare myofibroblastic neoplasms characterized by local invasiveness and high rates of recurrence, and sometimes mimic local recurrence of previously resected malignancies. Previous studies have suggested that molecular profiling may be useful for the diagnosis of the tumors and risk stratification. However, the clinical utility of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for the management of desmoid tumors has not been established. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old man visited our clinic for routine follow-up 1 year after left upper lobe lingular segmentectomy for lung ade

Predictive value of nodal metastases on local recurrence in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer. Retrospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: The significance of nodal metastases, very common in papillary thyroid cancer, and the role of lymph node dissection in the neoplasm management, are still controversial. The impact of lymph node involvement on local recurrence and long-term survival remains subject of active research. With the aim to better analyze the predictive value of lymph node involvement on recurrence and survival, we investigated the clinico-pathological patterns of local relapse following total thyroidectomy associated with lymph node dissection, for clinical nodal metastases papillary thyroid cancer, in o

[Sacrococcygeal chordoma simulating pilonidal cyst].

Chordoma is a rare neoplasm arising in the cerebrospinal axis from nothochordal remnants. The commonest location is in the sacrococcygeal area, then in the sphenooccipital region and less frequently in other parts of the vertebral column. Chordoma has been found in all age groups, but the greatest incidence was found between the fifth and the seventh decades: there is a male predominance. Signs and symptoms of chordoma are related to tumor location and are often present for a long period of time because of the slow growth of the neoplasia. Sacrococcygeal chordomas may produce lower back pain,

Poorly differentiated ("insular") carcinoma of the thyroid gland: an aggressive subset of differentiated thyroid neoplasms.

Four patients with a histologically distinctive thyroid carcinoma--which recently has been referred to as poorly differentiated ("insular") carcinoma--are reported. This study confirms the previous conclusions that patients with this neoplasm often experience an aggressive clinical course, with focal recurrences and distant metastases common, which results in death in the majority of patients. Such aggressive behavior may occur even when the insular component accounts for only a small percentage of an otherwise well-differentiated carcinoma, as seen in one of our patients. After subtotal or to

Malignant melanoma of urethra in a young female - Case report and Literature review.

Malignant mucosal melanoma (MM) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, which behaves differently from its cutaneous counterpart. MM of head and neck account for 55.4%, genital tracts - 18%, ano-rectal - 23.8% and urinary tract - 2.8%. Less than 200 cases of urethral melanomas have been reported in literature, out of which MM of female urethra represent only 0.2% of primary melanomas. Owing to the delayed presentation, early onset of metastasis and aggressive tumor biology, prognosis has remained largely poor despite adequate local control in MM. Surgery is the mainstay of management, with adjuvant

Biological behaviour and clinical outcome in 42 cats with sarcoids (cutaneous fibropapillomas).

Feline sarcoids (or cutaneous fibropapillomas) are rare dermal neoplasms. There are currently no reported statistics concerning their clinical behaviour. Our objective with this retrospective, multi-institutional study was to describe the clinical presentation and biological behaviour of sarcoids in cats and to determine the oncologic outcome following surgical resection. Medical records from a laboratory database and six contributing institutions were searched to identify cats with histologically confirmed sarcoids. Forty-two cats were included in the study. The majority of sarcoids occurred

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor originating in the nasal cavity: A CARE case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor (PHAT) is a rare low-grade malignant mesenchymal neoplasm. It commonly occurs in the limbs and trunk, with limited occurrences in the head and neck region. Only five cases of PHAT occurring in the head and neck have been reported in the literature to date. The etiology of PHAT remains unclear. We described a case of nasal cavity PHAT following CARE guidelines. CASE SUMMARY: A 32-year-old male with PHAT originating in the nasal cavity recurred after two surgeries. Adjuvant radiotherapy was performed after the third surgery. The patient ha

Recurrent chondroblastoma of the acetabulum in an adult.

Chondroblastoma is a rare, benign neoplasm of chondroblast cell origin, accounting for less than 1% of primary bone tumors. It is usually diagnosed in the second decade of life with most of the cases involving the long bones such as the femur and humerus. Furthermore, over 90% of cases are in individuals under 30 years of age. In older adults, chondroblastomas are typically found in bones in the foot, such as the talus and calcaneus. Treatment is usually local curettage of the lesion with a relatively low rate of recurrence. In this case report, we present a patient with an atypical age of ini

Fibromatosis with aggressive demeanor: Benign impersonator of malignancy.

Fibromatosis or desmoid fibromatosis is a rare benign neoplasm and develops commonly in the abdominal wall, abdominal cavity, or extra-abdominal sites. The mainstay of treatment is surgery. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are preferred in cases of inoperable/relapse or a multifocal disease. Hereby, we report a case of fibromatosis arising in the left popliteal fossa, proven by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Local excision of the mass was performed. The patient was asymptomatic for 6 months, after which she complained of difficulty in walking. Clinical evaluation elicited recurrence in

Radiation Therapy for Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Orbit.

Solitary fibrous tumor, formerly also referred to as hemangiopericytoma, is a fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm of the orbit that rarely metastasizes but has a propensity for local recurrence. The authors describe 5 cases of orbital solitary fibrous tumors that were treated with radiation. In 3 patients, radiation therapy was given in the neoadjuvant setting prior to surgery. In the remaining 2 patients, radiation was used palliatively in patients who declined surgery. In 4 of 5 cases, a measurable reduction in the size of the orbital mass was observed in response to radiation therapy; however
