KRAS Mutation in an Implant-associated Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma of the Jaw: Implications of Genetic Analysis of the Lesion for Treatment Concept and Surveillance.

The aim of this case report was to detail diagnosis and therapy in a case of implant-associated peripheral giant cell granuloma (IA-PGCG) of the jaw. Case Report: The 41-year-old female attended the outpatient clinic for treatment of recurrent mandibular IA-PGCG. The lesion was excised and the defect was closed with a connective tissue graft of the palate. Healing of oral defects was uneventful, and no local recurrence has occurred during a follow-up of 7 months. Genetic examination of the lesion identified a somatic mutation in KRAS. Conclusion: The lesions are assessed as reactive-inflammato

Musculoskeletal diagnosis in adolescents.

Musculoskeletal complaints are a common reason for adolescents to seek medical attention. It is estimated that musculoskeletal problems account for up to 20% of visits to primary care practitioners. Many studies have shown the inadequacies of training of medical students and primary care residents in musculoskeletal medicine. Also, many practitioners do not feel comfortable in the management of common problems in this area. A general outline for approaching adolescents with musculoskeletal complaints is presented in this article and is not unlike the approach to other clinical problems. This o

Pleural multicystic mesothelial proliferation. The so-called multicystic mesothelioma.

We report on the clinical and pathological features of a hitherto unrecognized multicystic and multifocal mesothelial lesion arising in the pleural cavity of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman. The lesions consisted of clusters of thin-walled cysts separated by connective tissue and lined by a single layer of flattened and cuboidal mesothelium. Mucin stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy were consistent with a mesothelial origin. The pathological features are identical to those of the previously reported multicystic mesotheliomas of the peritoneum. Although these multicystic periton

Gardner syndrome: presurgical planning and surgical management of craniomaxillofacial osteomas.

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by the combined presence of multiple intestinal polyps and extraintestinal manifestations. The extraintestinal manifestations include multiple osteomas, connective tissue tumors, thyroid carcinomas, and hypertrophy of the pigmented epithelium of the retina. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue characterized by slow continuous growth that usually affects the long bones and cranial bones and is a major symptom for Gardner syndrome. The authors report the extraintestinal le

A teratoma of the lung containing thymic tissue.

A case of a benign, cystic intrapulmonary teratoma occurring in the left lobe of a 63-yr-old female is described and the typical clinical symptoms and distinguishing X-ray appearances which may be helpful in diagnosing this rare tumour are mentioned. The connection between the tumor and the segmental bronchus clearly established the true intrapulmonary nature of the lesion in this case and the unusual finding of thymic tissue within the wall supports previous speculation regarding the possible thymic origin of these neoplasms.

Isolated peroneal tenosynovial lipoma arborescens: multimodality imaging features.

Synovial lipoma arborescens is a rare and benign fatty proliferative lesion of the synovium that is most commonly seen within the suprapatellar pouch of the knee, but increasingly reported to involve tendon sheaths, including those of the ankle. We present the third known case of tenosynovial lipoma arborescens isolated to the peroneal tendon sheath without ankle joint involvement. To our knowledge, this is the first to report this entity utilizing a unique combination of radiographic, sonographic, and MR imaging, along with intraoperative and histologic correlation. Knowledge of this case is

Lipoma of the parotid gland extending from the superficial to the deep lobe: a rarity.

Lipoma of the parotid gland is a rare clinical entity. Because of the rarity, they are not often considered in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors. Lipoma of the parotid gland constitutes around 3% of all parotid tumors. These are asymptomatic and occur both in the deep and the superficial lobe of the parotid.(1) The most favored age group is from the fifth to sixth decade of life and is 10 times more common in the males.(6) Lipoma extending from superficial to deep lobe of parotid gland has not been reported in the literature to our knowledge till date. A 56-year-old male patient, wi

Extracellular cross-striated banded structures in human connective tissue.

Extracellular cross-striated banded structures have been found in the connective tissues of a variety of organs. Rarely have they been found in conditions such as: hyperplastic parathyroid, follicular adenoma of the thyroid, metastatic hemangiopericytoma in the lung, sarcoidosis of lymph node, and two biopsies of nerve as reported here. The shape and size of the structure varies, as well as its periodicity, which is usually in the range of 1000 to 15000 A. An unusual exception to this general rule is the banded structure in the follicular adenoma of the thyroid where the periodicity is 270 A.

Intracranial Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors: A Systematic Literature Review of a Rare Entity.

BACKGROUND: Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors (PMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms known for producing Tumor-induced Osteomalacia (TIO). TIO is an uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by radiographic evidence of inadequate bone mineralization and analytical abnormalites. METHODS: We sought to present a case of TIO caused by skull base PMT with intracranial extension, manifesting with pain, progressive weakness, and multiple bone fractures. Furthermore, a systematic review was performed, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. A sea

A Case of Ceruminous Adenocarcinoma Not Otherwise Specified (NOS) in the External Auditory Canal.

External auditory canal cancer is a rare disease which can be treated by surgery or chemoradiation. The most common histological type is squamous cell carcinoma, but rare types such as adenocarcinoma have been reported and are thought to be derived from the ceruminous glands. Here, we present a case of ceruminous adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (NOS) in the external auditory canal. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our department with discomfort due to a mass in the external ear canal. No typical symptoms of malignancy, such as pain or bleeding, were noted at the initial examination.

Juvenile granulosa cell tumor associated with Ollier disease.

Prior case reports have described synchronous ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) and enchondromatosis in patients with Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome. We present a case of a juvenile granulosa cell tumor with an IDH1 somatic mutation identified in the ovarian tissue in a 15-year-old female who presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding, several months of irregular menses, and a large multicystic adnexal mass. Multiple mixed lytic and sclerotic lesions were identified in the bones of the pelvis on imaging studies obtained during the work-up of her abdominal mass. Like previous rep

Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia Caused by a Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor of the Sole Presenting as a Crippling Illness in a Postmenopausal Woman.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia, a rare and intriguing paraneoplastic syndrome that is usually caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, leads to severe pain and hypophosphatemia. However, during clinical practice, most patients suffer from significant delay of diagnosis and treatment because the symptoms are similar to those of some very common diseases, such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Moreover, physical complaints from postmenopausal women usually exacerbate the possibility of such delays. We describe a case of a postmenopausal woman with crippling bone pain and weakness, who had been

Breast Sarcomas, Phyllodes Tumors, and Desmoid Tumors: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Staging, and Histology-Specific Management Considerations.

Breast sarcomas arise from connective tissues of the breast and account for fewer than 1% of all breast malignancies. They can be subclassified as primary breast sarcomas, which arise de novo and are histologically diverse, and secondary breast sarcomas, which arise as a result of radiation or lymphedema and are most commonly angiosarcomas. Two other connective tissue neoplasms that occur within the breast include phyllodes tumors and desmoid tumors, which exhibit a spectrum of behaviors. Malignant phyllodes tumors are biologically similar to primary breast sarcomas, whereas desmoid tumors are

A review of soft tissue calcifications.

The deposition of calcium and phosphorous salts in the soft tissues can be classified into three categories: metastatic calcification, dystrophic calcification, and calcinosis. Metastatic calcification occurs when the calcium-phosphorous levels are elevated. The calcifications involve normal tissues. Associated disease include hyperparathyroidism, neoplasms, milk-alkali syndrome, hypervitaminosis D, and tumoral calcinosis. Dystrophic calcification occurs in the presence of normal metabolism in damaged or devitalized tissues. Disorders included in this classification are: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Myxomas in the fingertips.

The myxoma, a benign connective-tissue neoplasm consisting of stellate cells and a loose mucoid stroma, rarely involves the hand. Only three previous cases of myxoma in the finger have been reported in the literature. Two cases of myxoma in the fingers are presented here, one occurring in the finger pulp and the other in the subungual region. Cases described in the literature and the authors' experience indicate that the tumor is cured by a meticulous, marginal resection, though slight nail deformity can be a sequela.
