Postnatal neural crest stem cells from hair follicle interact with nerve tissue in vitro and in vivo.

Neural crest stem cells that located in the postnatal hair follicle (HF-NCSC) are considered a promising tool for treatment of nervous system diseases and injuries. It is well known that HF-NCSC can be used in the spinal cord and sciatic nerve reparation but their ability to restore brain structures is poorly studied. In this article we are investigating the interaction between HF-NCSC and a nerve tissue (embryonic and adult). We have found out that HF-NCSC isolated from adult mice grow and differentiate in accordance with the mouse embryo developmental stage when co-cultured with the embryoni

Diagnostic Value of Virtual Touch Tissue Imaging Quantification for Evaluating Median Nerve Stiffness in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the shear wave velocity (SWV) of the median nerve by Virtual Touch tissue imaging quantification (VTIQ; Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany) through the beginning of the carpal tunnel and to determine whether VTIQ could be used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: This study recruited 49 consecutive patients (72 wrists) with a definitive diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome and 23 healthy volunteers (46 wrists). We measured the median nerve diameter and cross-sectional area by 2-dimensional sonography and the SWV by VTIQ. The interobserver variability was analyzed, and

Preservation and Tissue Handling Technique on Iatrogenic Dural Tear with Herniated Nerve Root at Cauda Equina Level.

Iatrogenic or incidental dural tear is a relatively common complication in lumbar decompression surgery. Although mostly there are no changes that occurred in long-term result following an incidental durotomy, the sequelae are not always benign especially when the herniated nerve root is involved. Preservation and tissue handling is paramount in order to prevent further injury. Two cases of dural tear with herniated nerve root complicating the lumbar decompression surgery are presented. Direct watertight repair was performed using the preservation and tissue handling concept. Assessing the rel

Effect of white adipose tissue flap and insulin-like growth factor-1 on nerve regeneration in rats.

Adipose tissue-derived stem cells and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) have shown potential to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an in vivo biologic scaffold, consisting of white adipose tissue flap (WATF) and/or IGF-1 on nerve regeneration in a crush injury model. Forty rats all underwent a sciatic nerve crush injury and then received: a pedicled WATF, a controlled local release of IGF-1, both treatments, or no treatment at the injury site. Outcomes were the normalized maximum isometric tetanic force (ITF) of the tibialis ant

Mantle cell lymphoma stage IV affecting lacrimal glands, retro-orbital tissue, optic nerve and ocular motor muscles.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an entity which exceptionally affects the ocular region and periorbital tissues, but which should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions which affect the orbital region in a diffused manner. We report the case of a 60-year-old patient diagnosed with stage IV MCL, whose fi rst clinical manifestation was a result of the damage of lacrimal glands, retro-orbital tissue and ocular motor muscles. The patient was treated with rituximab and chemotherapy, achieving a complete response of those lesions.

Sciatic nerve palsy--a complication of posterior approach using enhanced soft tissue repair for total hip arthroplasty.

Sciatic nerve palsy is a rare but well recognised complication of total hip replacement. There are a variety of potential causes of sciatic nerve palsy and its prevalence with different approaches has been mentioned in the literature.(1-5) The posterolateral or 'Southern' approach with some form of enhanced soft tissue repair is a commonly used approach for primary total hip arthroplasty. However, the sciatic nerve is recognised to be in close proximity to the surgical field. We report a case of sciatic nerve palsy after this approach as a result of a surgical suture used for soft tissue repai

Lipoblastic nerve sheath tumors: report of a distinctive variant of neural soft tissue neoplasm with adipocytic differentiation.

Benign nerve sheath tumors of soft tissue can occasionally adopt unusual or unfamiliar morphologic appearances that may introduce difficulties for diagnosis, such as multinucleation, bizarre nuclei, intranuclear vacuoles, and other degenerative changes. Tumor cells adopting a signet-ring or lipoblast-like configuration, however, are mostly associated with epithelial malignancies, liposarcoma and melanoma, and have been only rarely observed in spindle cell tumors of soft tissue. We report 5 cases of benign nerve sheath neoplasms that displayed prominent signet-ring cells with lipoblast-like fea

Using tissue clearing and light sheet fluorescence microscopy for the three-dimensional analysis of sensory and sympathetic nerve endings that innervate bone and dental tissue of mice.

Bone and dental tissues are richly innervated by sensory and sympathetic neurons. However, the characterization of the morphology, molecular phenotype, and distribution of nerves that innervate hard tissue has so far mostly been limited to thin histological sections. This approach does not adequately capture dispersed neuronal projections due to the loss of important structural information during three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction. In this study, we modified the immunolabeling-enabled imaging of solvent-cleared organs (iDISCO/iDISCO+) clearing protocol to image high-resolution neuronal stru

Peripheral Motor and Sensory Nerve Conduction following Transplantation of Undifferentiated Autologous Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells in a Biodegradable U.S. Food and Drug Administration-Approved Nerve Conduit.

BACKGROUND: Conduits preseeded with either Schwann cells or stem cells differentiated into Schwann cells demonstrated promising results for the outcome of nerve regeneration in nerve defects. METHODS: The concept of this trial combines nerve repair by means of a commercially available nerve guidance conduit and preseeding with autologous, undifferentiated, adipose tissue-derived stem cells. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells were harvested from rats and subsequently seeded onto a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved type I collagen conduit. Sciatic nerve gaps 10 mm in length were created

Neurological Tissue Dissection Techniques in Mouse Models for Reproducible Scientific Results: Brain, Spinal Cord, CSF, and Sciatic Nerve.

Biomedical research studies, specifically regarding human neurodegenerative diseases, are bound by ethical challenges, and have limited diagnostic and treatment options. Transgenic mouse models offer an incredible research advantage to conduct feasible and practical research with the ability to precisely define the progression of neurodegenerative disease over a wellcontrolled dosage and timeline. The use of transgenic mouse models has been extensive and is critical to advancing research in many ways, including understanding brain morphology and general tissue changes caused by neurological di

Corneal Nerve Regeneration via MSC-Derived EVs: Tissue Source and Culture Dimensionality Dictate miRNA Cargo and Therapeutic Efficacy.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as critical mediators of intercellular communication and tissue repair, offering a promising cell-free platform for regenerative therapies. In the cornea, sensory nerves are critical for maintaining epithelial integrity and ocular homeostasis. Nerve injury resulting from trauma, surgery, or disease leads to persistent epithelial defects and impaired vision, with limited treatment options. Here, the neuro-regenerative potential of mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs (MSC-EVs) isolated from human cornea (Co-MSC) and bone marrow (BM-MSC) cultured under 2D a

Hybrid electrospun polyhydroxybutyrate/gelatin/laminin/polyaniline scaffold for nerve tissue engineering application: Preparation, characterization, and in vitro assay.

Despite the widespread central nervous system injuries, treatment of these disorders is still an issue of concern due to the complexities. Natural recovery in these patients is rarely observed, which calls for developing new methods that address these problems. In this study, natural polymers of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and gelatin were electrospun into scaffolds and cross-linked. In order to modify the PHB-based scaffold for nerve tissue engineering, the scaffold surface was modified by exposure to the ammonium gas plasma under controlled conditions, and the laminin as a promoter for neural

C-terminal domain small phosphatase 1 (CTDSP1) regulates growth factor expression and axonal regeneration in peripheral nerve tissue.

Peripheral Nerve Injury (PNI) represents a major clinical and economic burden. Despite the ability of peripheral neurons to regenerate their axons after an injury, patients are often left with motor and/or sensory disability and may develop chronic pain. Successful regeneration and target organ reinnervation require comprehensive transcriptional changes in both injured neurons and support cells located at the site of injury. The expression of most of the genes required for axon growth and guidance and for synapsis formation is repressed by a single master transcriptional regulator, the Repress
