Identification of induced and naturally occurring conductive hearing loss in mice using bone conduction.

While many mouse models of hearing loss have been described, a significant fraction of the genetic defects in these models affect both the inner ear and middle ears. A common method used to separate inner-ear (sensory-neural) from middle-ear (conductive) pathologies in the hearing clinic is the combination of air-conduction and bone-conduction audiometry. In this report, we investigate the use of air- and bone-conducted evoked auditory brainstem responses to perform a similar separation in mice. We describe a technique by which we stimulate the mouse ear both acoustically and via whole-head vi

Questionnaire tools for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome from the patient history.

INTRODUCTION: There remains no "gold standard" for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Clinical diagnosis is often held to be paramount but depends on the skills of the individual practitioner. We describe two mathematical approaches to the analysis of a history obtained by questionnaire. METHODS: We used two earlier instruments, a conventional logistic regression analysis, and an artificial neural network to analyze data from 5860 patients referred for diagnosis of hand symptoms. We evaluated their ability to predict whether nerve conduction studies would show evidence of CTS usin

[Hereditary motor sensory neuropathies].

The descriptive term "hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN)" includes a group of disorders of different nosology which besides heredity show a progressive distal symmetrical motor sensory neuropathy as a common clinical feature. The etiology of these disorders is probably different. According to electrophysiological and morphological findings two major types of HMSN can be distinguished from each other: 1. The neural type (HMSN, type I) is characterized by axonal degeneration, segmental demyelination and hypertrophic changes. The nerve conduction velocity in this type is significantly slo

Effect of Dietary Content of Menhaden Oil with or without Salsalate on Neuropathic Endpoints in High-Fat-Fed/Low-Dose Streptozotocin-Treated Sprague Dawley Rats.

In this study, we wanted to extend our investigation of the efficacy of fish oil with or without salsalate on vascular and neural complications using a type 2 diabetic rat model. Four weeks after the onset of hyperglycemia, diabetic rats were treated via the diet with 3 different amounts of menhaden oil with or without salsalate for 12 weeks. Afterwards, vascular reactivity of epineurial arterioles and neuropathy-related endpoints were examined. The addition of salsalate to high-fat diets enriched with 10% or 25% kcal of menhaden oil protected vascular reactivity to acetylcholine and calcium g

[Detection of central perceptual decrement in optic neuropathies with computer perimetry (Octopus) and visual evoked potentials].

Contrast sensitivity, as far as tested with pattern-VEPs, and light-difference sensitivity, psychophysically tested with the Octopus in the visual field center, seem to reflect different visual functions, because they are disturbed to a different degree in discrete neuropathies: light-difference sensitivity may be within normal range and a careful numerical analysis is needed in order to find pathologic differences. With VEPs, on the other hand, it is easier to detect a loss of normal neural conduction.

Novel approaches to restore parasympathetic activity to the heart in cardiorespiratory diseases.

Neural control of the heart is regulated by sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, both opposing each other to maintain cardiac homeostasis via regulating heart rate, conduction velocity, force of contraction, and coronary blood flow. Sympathetic hyperactivity and diminished parasympathetic activity are the characteristic features of many cardiovascular disease states including hypertension, myocardial ischemia, and arrhythmias that result in heart failure. Restoring parasympathetic activity to the heart has recently been identified as the promising approach

Self-organization of "fibro-axonal" composite tissue around unmodified metallic micro-electrodes can form a functioning interface with a peripheral nerve: A new direction for creating long-term neural interfaces.

INTRODUCTION: A long-term peripheral neural interface is an area of intense research. The use of electrode interfaces is limited by the biological response to the electrode material. METHODS: We created an electrode construct to harbor the rat sciatic nerve with interposition of autogenous adipose tissue between the nerve and the electrode. The construct was implanted for 10 weeks. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry showed a unique laminar pattern of axonal growth layered between fibro-collagenous tissue, forming a physical interface with the tungsten micro-electrode. Action potentials transmitte

Backpack Load Carriage Affects Motor and Sensory Responses of the Median Nerve.

INTRODUCTION: Use of the upper limbs is often necessary for military and firefighter personnel who carry backpacks. Backpack straps can compress the brachial plexus nerves of the upper limb. It is known that carrying a backpack can lead to rucksack palsy, but it is unknown if effects of upper limb nerve compression from carrying a heavy backpack can be demonstrated after a single session of backpack use. Our study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of backpack carriage on upper limb nerve conduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six participants including 18 female (mean ± SD: age 2

Subjective and Objective Differences in Patients with Unilateral and Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the Role of Obesity in Syndrome Severity.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether physiologic differences exist in musculoskeletal ultrasound nerve measurements when comparing bilateral and unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients. Similarly, the influence of body mass index on CTS severity is not well characterized. METHODS: Unilateral and bilateral CTS patients were seen from October of 2014 to February of 2021. Obese and nonobese CTS patients were compared. Median nerve cross-sectional area (CSA), Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTSQ), and six-item Carpal Tunnel Symptom Score (CTS-6) measures were obtained. Ne

Reversible conduction failure in acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

Reversible conduction failure (RCF) has been documented in acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and is considered a sign of nodopathy. Several reports of RCF in acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP) have suggested that it could be a manifestation of nodopathy. We conducted this study to determine the frequency of RCF in AMAN and AIDP and to compare the clinical features between the two groups with or without RCF. RCF was observed in 38.9% and 18.5% patients in the AMAN and AIDP groups in our study, respectively. AIDP patients with anti-ganglioside antibodies represented 29.4%

Utilization of Neurophysiological Classification Systems in Determining Interventions for Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Median mononeuropathy at or distal to the wrist, or carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), is the most common peripheral nerve compression disorder in the upper extremity. Neurophysiological classification systems for patients with CTS have been developed and implemented to provide health care providers an enhanced system of electrophysiological evaluation with a grading scale, so that they may evaluate their patients with CTS within a system that confers relative severity. Electrophysiological data collected within these classification systems includes either nerve conduction studies (NCS)

Electrodiagnostic subtyping in Guillain-Barré syndrome: Use of criteria in practice based on a survey study in IGOS.

Electrodiagnostic (EDx) studies are helpful in diagnosing and subtyping of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Published criteria for differentiation into GBS subtypes focus on cutoff values, but other items receive less attention, although they may influence EDx subtyping: (a) extensiveness of EDx testing, (b) nerve-specific considerations, (c) distal compound muscle action potential (CMAP)-amplitude requirements, (d) criteria for conduction block and temporal dispersion. The aims of this study were to investigate how these aspects were approached by neuromuscular EDx experts in practice and how t

Obturator nerve injury diagnosed by nerve conduction: a case report.

The obturator nerve lies deep within the pelvis, and it can be damaged by direct injury during surgery. In this study, nerve conduction was used to confirm an obturator nerve injury in a patient who presented with hip adductor weakness following gynecological surgery for endometrial cancer. A 56-year-old woman complained of weakness in the right adductor muscles after a laparoscopic hysterectomy due to endometrial cancer. Seven days after surgery, the degree of weakness of the right hip adductor was Medical Research Council (MRC) Scale 1; thus, a nerve conduction velocity test was conducted. T
