Testing hypotheses about the underlying deficit of apraxia of speech through computational neural modelling with the DIVA model.

Purpose: A recent behavioural experiment featuring a noise masking paradigm suggests that Apraxia of Speech (AOS) reflects a disruption of feedforward control, whereas feedback control is spared and plays a more prominent role in achieving and maintaining segmental contrasts. The present study set out to validate the interpretation of AOS as a possible feedforward impairment using computational neural modelling with the DIVA (Directions Into Velocities of Articulators) model.Method: In a series of computational simulations with the DIVA model featuring a noise-masking paradigm mimicking the be

Constructing organoid-brain-computer interfaces for neurofunctional repair after brain injury.

The reconstruction of damaged neural circuits is critical for neurological repair after brain injury. Classical brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow direct communication between the brain and external controllers to compensate for lost functions. Importantly, there is increasing potential for generalized BCIs to input information into the brains to restore damage, but their effectiveness is limited when a large injured cavity is caused. Notably, it might be overcome by transplantation of brain organoids into the damaged region. Here, we construct innovative BCIs mediated by implantable organ

Transferable and data efficient metamodeling of storm water system nodal depths using auto-regressive graph neural networks.

Storm water systems (SWSs) are essential infrastructure providing multiple services including environmental protection and flood prevention. Typically, utility companies rely on computer simulators to properly design, operate, and manage SWSs. However, multiple applications in SWSs are highly time-consuming. Researchers have resorted to cheaper-to-run models, i.e. metamodels, as alternatives of computationally expensive models. With the recent surge in artificial intelligence applications, machine learning has become a key approach for metamodelling urban water networks. Specifically, deep lea

Frequency constraint-based adversarial attack on deep neural networks for medical image classification.

The security of AI systems has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly in the medical diagnosis field. To develop a secure medical image classification system based on deep neural networks, it is crucial to design effective adversarial attacks that can embed hidden, malicious behaviors into the system. However, designing a unified attack method that can generate imperceptible attack samples with high content similarity and be applied to diverse medical image classification systems is challenging due to the diversity of medical imaging modalities and dimensionalities. Most ex

A scale conjugate neural network approach for the fractional schistosomiasis disease system.

This study presents the numerical solutions of the fractional schistosomiasis disease model (SDM) using the supervised neural networks (SNNs) and the computational scaled conjugate gradient (SCG), i.e. SNNs-SCG. The fractional derivatives are used for the precise outcomes of the fractional SDM. The preliminary fractional SDM is categorized as: uninfected, infected with schistosomiasis, recovered through infection, expose and susceptible to this virus. The accurateness of the SNNs-SCG is performed to solve three different scenarios based on the fractional SDM with synthetic data obtained with f

Self-supervised out-of-distribution detection in wireless capsule endoscopy images.

While deep learning has displayed excellent performance in a broad spectrum of application areas, neural networks still struggle to recognize what they have not seen, i.e., out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs. In the medical field, building robust models that are able to detect OOD images is highly critical, as these rare images could show diseases or anomalies that should be detected. In this study, we use wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) images to present a novel patch-based self-supervised approach comprising three stages. First, we train a triplet network to learn vector representations of WC

Neural Matrix Factorization Recommendation for User Preference Prediction Based on Explicit and Implicit Feedback.

Explicit feedback and implicit feedback are two important types of heterogeneous data for constructing a recommendation system. The combination of the two can effectively improve the performance of the recommendation system. However, most of the current deep learning recommendation models fail to fully exploit the complementary advantages of two types of data combined and usually only use binary implicit feedback data. Thus, this paper proposes a neural matrix factorization recommendation algorithm (EINMF) based on explicit-implicit feedback. First, neural network is used to learn nonlinear fe

Hierarchical binding in convolutional neural networks: Making adversarial attacks geometrically challenging.

We approach the issue of robust machine vision by presenting a novel deep-learning architecture, inspired by work in theoretical neuroscience on how the primate brain performs visual feature binding. Feature binding describes how separately represented features are encoded in a relationally meaningful way, such as an edge composing part of the larger contour of an object. We propose that the absence of such representations from current models might partly explain their vulnerability to small, often humanly-imperceptible distortions known as adversarial examples. It has been proposed that adver

Using cascade CNN-LSTM-FCNs to identify AI-altered video based on eye state sequence.

Deep learning is notably successful in data analysis, computer vision, and human control. Nevertheless, this approach has inevitably allowed the development of DeepFake video sequences and images that could be altered so that the changes are not easily or explicitly detectable. Such alterations have been recently used to spread false news or disinformation. This study aims to identify Deepfaked videos and images and alert viewers to the possible falsity of the information. The current work presented a novel means of revealing fake face videos by cascading the convolution network with recurrent

Diagnosis of Lumbar Spondylolisthesis Using a Pruned CNN Model.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Convolutional neural network (CNN) models have made tremendous progress in the medical domain in recent years. The application of the CNN model is restricted due to a huge number of redundant and unnecessary parameters. In this paper, the weight and unit pruning strategy are used to reduce the complexity of the CNN model so that it can be used on small devices for the diagnosis of lumbar spondylolisthesis. Experimental results reveal that by removing 90% of network load, the unit pruning strategy outperforms weight pruning while achieving 94.12% accuracy. Thus, only 30% (around 850532 out of 3

Real-Time Detection of Non-Stationary Objects Using Intensity Data in Automotive LiDAR SLAM.

This article aims at demonstrating the feasibility of modern deep learning techniques for the real-time detection of non-stationary objects in point clouds obtained from 3-D light detecting and ranging (LiDAR) sensors. The motion segmentation task is considered in the application context of automotive Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), where we often need to distinguish between the static parts of the environment with respect to which we localize the vehicle, and non-stationary objects that should not be included in the map for localization. Non-stationary objects do not provide rep

Evolution of the Wilson-Cowan equations.

The Wilson-Cowan equations were developed to provide a simplified yet powerful description of neural network dynamics. As such, they embraced nonlinear dynamics, but in an interpretable form. Most importantly, it was the first mathematical formulation to emphasize the significance of interactions between excitatory and inhibitory neural populations, thereby incorporating both cooperation and competition. Subsequent research by many has documented the Wilson-Cowan significance in such diverse fields as visual hallucinations, memory, binocular rivalry, and epilepsy. The fact that these equations

Bursting without slow kinetics: a role for a small world?

Bursting, a dynamical phenomenon whereby episodes of neural action potentials are punctuated by periodic episodes of inactivity, is ubiquitous in neural systems. Examples include components of the respiratory rhythm generating circuitry in the brain stem, spontaneous activity in the neonatal rat spinal cord, and developing neural networks in the retina of the immature ferret. Bursting can also manifest itself in single neurons. Bursting dynamics require one or more kinetic processes slower than the timescale of the action potentials. Such processes usually manifest themselves in intrinsic ion

Efficient colorectal cancer classification from histopathological images utilizing lightweight convolutional neural networks.

As one of the most fatal malignancies worldwide, colorectal cancer demands accurate histopathological image analysis to support timely diagnosis and effective clinical decision-making. This study investigates four lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) variants for binary classification of colon histopathology patches into Colon_Adenocarcinoma and Colon_Benign_Tissue. A unified experimental framework is employed, incorporating standardized preprocessing, data augmentation, class-weighted optimization, and macro-F1-based early stopping to ensure fair architectural comparison. A similarity-aware network with contrastive optimization for biomedical image segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Accurate biomedical image segmentation is crucial for clinical diagnosis. Convolutional neural networks and Transformer-based models have been widely used for biomedical image segmentation and have improved segmentation accuracy across multiple imaging modalities. However, most existing methods rely heavily on supervised learning with large-scale annotated datasets, while professionally annotated biomedical images remain scarce. In addition, the geometric consistency available from augmented and unlabeled images is not always explicitly exploited. METHODS: We proposed a similarity

A multimodal prediction model for brain hematoma expansion based on deep neural network with transformer-driven collaborative attention fusion.

Hematoma expansion (HE) in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is strongly associated with death and disability, so accurate early prediction is important for clinical decision making. Existing methods often rely on single imaging signs or traditional scoring systems and are unable to consider both the three dimensional hematoma structure and the clinical status at the same time, which limits predictive performance and robustness. To address this, we propose a multimodal deep learning model named SResFormer based on position-aware Computed Tomography (CT) feature encoding.

TB-SERS analyzer: Analysis tool for tuberculosis prediction based on Raman spectroscopy with machine learning and convolutional neural network.

Raman spectroscopy (RS) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) are promising technologies that have been applied across various fields, including clinical diagnostics. In the context of tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis, RS/SERS offers significant potential for rapid, non-invasive, and sensitive biomolecular detection. However, no software currently exists that is specifically designed to analyze RS/SERS data for TB diagnosis. Our goal is to develop such a tool by integrating machine learning (ML) and a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) into a user-friendly graphical user
